any genre, any time period.

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 15 March 2004 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

search: Chris Lee. he even has a song ("Say It Ain't Soul") where he shrugs off the blue-eyed soul tag.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 15 March 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

S: Tony Joe White's first two albums

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 15 March 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 15 March 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

It wouldn't be beyond me to call John Frusciante's solo material fractured white boy soul.

s: lewis taylor

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer the term "Blue-eyed Soul." Like Lambchop on Nixon.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer the term "Blue-eyed Soul."

i understand this, but most of the white people i know don't have blue eyes. wouldn't want to discriminate against my darker haired brethren

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

duh, how could i forget one of my favorites, late period Tim Buckley. Sweet Surrender is still one of my favorite songs of all time.

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 15 March 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, does Boz Scaggs have anything remotely as good as Lowdown?

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 15 March 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it odd that the Junior Boys vocals remind me of Rick Astley?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 15 March 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

wouldn't want to discriminate against my darker haired brethren

But fuck the women.

Xii (Xii), Monday, 15 March 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

hahah

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 15 March 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

How about the Righteous Brothers? They started it all!

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: APB, the Blow Monkeys (that's right, I said it)
destroy: freakin' Simply Red, already

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

foreigner. Di swears by it, and dirty white boy is such an anthem.

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Boz Scaggs have anything remotely as good as Lowdown?

Does anyone remember a video from the late 80s (early 90s?) from one of the groups in the Bel Biv Devoe camp (It may have BEEN B.B.D., or Boyz II Men, or even Another Bad creation) -- where the video featured a visual "roll call" of all the groups that made up the "East Coast Family"? I distinctly remember one of the groups featured in the video was called "Sudden Impact," and was a brutally cheesy all-white proto-boy band. They never seemed to materialize with an album, though...

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Blue-eyed soul is a better term because that includes Dusty Springfield.

Van Morrison (Domino, Wild Night, Warm Love, Wavelength)
The Small Faces (Tin Soldier, Afterglow)
The Young Rascals (Groovin', A Beautiful Morning)
The Spencer Davis Group (I'm A Man, Gimme Some Loving)
Steve Winwood in general

LondonLee (LondonLee), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I say the Box Tops. And Dan Penn's wonderful '73 "Nobody's Fool." Been trying to get into Eddie Hinton, but he just sounds too much like an Otis Redding imitator, altho it's a good imitation. And yeah, Hall and Oates, Todd, they all have their moments.

I have to say that Colin Blunstone's r&b/soul covers with the Zombies prove to me at least that he's far better at it that Winwood...get him down to Memphis and Willie Mitchell pronto...

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

phil collins - in the air tonight

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I still really don't get the Junior Boys = soul thing.

Hall and Oates num num. Wham! Spandau Ballet (to a point).

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

That point being "Highly Strung", the song I love so much noone must speak ill of it on pain of death. After "Parade" it all went pear-shaped, though

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

hall and oates - rock 'n' soul pt 1 (the greatest hits) is well worth buying.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

george michael has some great solo tracks: "faith" and "Fast love" are my favourites. i think that p.collins one i mentioned is his only good track - otherwise, avoid.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"Against All Odds" is good too.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

robert palmer had some good ones. off the top of my head: "addicted to love" and "she makes my day".

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Captain Beefheart - Too Much Time

... check it out

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Phew, I'm glad someone else came out of the closet about "Against All Odds" now I don't feel too ashamed for liking it.

'Young Americans" Bowie

LondonLee (LondonLee), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil Collins' "If Leaving Me is Easy" is pretty great too.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

people who hate phil collins have a heart two sizes too small

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

he actually did a nice cover of "groovy kind of love" as well.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i haven't heard the original, but there's definitely nothing wrong with phil's version.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

There's nothing wrong with it but it's not great either.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

could any of elton john's material be termed white-boy soul? perhaps not.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The Philadelphia stuff perhaps?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"philadelphia freedom"

simply red had one good track - "something got me started". don't let the odious mick hucknall's odiousness put you off. this is a good track.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

No way they fit in the canonical sense but the first album by The Band strikes me as half soul music.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Kane Gang!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, "The Closest Thing To Heaven"

LondonLee (LondonLee), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

that's good stuff (w/apologies to MES)

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)
