vahid (vahid), Monday, 15 March 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo to thread!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 15 March 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i was sooooo excited when i finally found a copy of "wayz of the dragon" used, and i'm afraid that this is going to turn out like that again.

i am especially afraid that every track is going to have a breakdown where a deep male voice announces the title of the track. actually to put an even finer point on it i'm afraid discs 3 and 4 are going to sound like a steroidal version of urban takeover.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 15 March 2004 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a feeling this has been discussed before. hmmm. gareth to thread.
inevitably i was listening to a 1995 mix by djss just an hour ago.

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 15 March 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i just bought this when i was in nyc!

okay, first things first: it's mixed, obv. second: ALL TRACKS ARE ON ONE TRACK. so if you hear something you like, get comfy with yr seek button. (that said, the mixing is quite good.) disc one is pretty rough and ready as befits the timeframe: "total xstacy" by eq, "the darkside" by jungle house crew, and the "breakbeat pressure" tracks are all classics, but it does get a little same-y. discs two and three are undeniably the bomb though: you can very easily hear the music go from darkcore to jungle to drum & bass to techstep, and disc three has some of the best "pure"/jump up/minimalist dnb ever (dj ss is very uncanonized for some reason but this is the guy who made "the lighter" for chrissakes). disc four is useless, but you probably guessed that...i listened to it as i was going to bed last night, and i made it about six tracks or so in before i had to turn it off. so, $45 is probably way way too much (tower in nyc had it for like $27, which i think was fair). if you find it cheap online and dont mind the all-tracks-on-one-track thing, go for it.

yeah, wayz of the dragon is mind-numbingly boring, innit?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

even worse, i didn't find out until i got home that my copy had the comic book removed!! to be fair wayz has got one good track on it ... the "michael caine" mix of "the dictation" (michael caine? wtf?)

IT'S a DICTATION and DEFINITION of HOW WE LIVIN ... HOW WE LIVIN ... HOW WE LIVIN ... (cue earthshaking breaks and whizzing noises)

i think this comp was mentioned on another thread but nobody'd heard it yet.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 15 March 2004 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't buy this. It seems a LOT weaker than the Formation 1990-1997 thing which was great and STOPPED at just about the right time.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

why couldn't they have dropped markers in to id the rough beginnings of the tracks? one loooooong mix track is always a turnoff for me.

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i never understood one-track mixes either (carl craig on react, mark broom for mowax, jeff mills liquid room, etc) ... is there something to do with copyright here? do you get to pay broadcast fees instead of reproduction or something? (for some reason that sounds *less* preposterous than the engineer is too lazy to chop it up in a .wav editor)

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

of course, come to think of it it'd only take me a rainy sunday afternoon to chop up those three mixes so maybe that's what it is.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

this looks pretty hot, too.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought it was some annoying pro-set fundamentalist stance - as in "you will enjoy the *journey* NOT individual tracks". Significantly the first unsegmented mix I think I bought was Northern Exposure 2.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

is there a decent ibiza/3rdparty/kemet/awesome comp out there?

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

there's the way way out of print "junglism vol. 1" for ibiza stuff. there's also a three disc whitehouse comp floating around on slsk.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

darkcore to jungle to drum & bass to techstep

Off the point a bit, but how would you define each of these, Strongo (or anyone)? The British need for nomenclature seems to know no bounds and I wouldn't mind hearing someone else's take on the whole historiography.

Stephen Stockwell (Stephen Stockwell), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Asking non-Brits is funny cuz I can't imagine that any of us would have any idea what to call most of this stuff (nor would we have really heard it) if not for Brit writers.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

well i decided against. i think maybe i'll try to find the 2 disc set that alex recommended.

but while i was there, i saw this compilation. remember seeing it around 95 when i was first starting to buy stuff and i passed it up then. best/worst cover art ever. now it's been reissued. any good?? (i know about five songs on there)

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 06:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The songs are mostly really good (there are two or three more in this series btw) but I have no idea if the sound is good or anything.

Haha we should do a S/D of cheap relatively available jungle comps.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 06:04 (twenty-two years ago)

that's what i figured! "deep love" and the excellent krust and roni size picks and tom and jerry being the tip-offs. good, glad it's confirmed.

we need to do a "S/D: ILX Jungle S/D" thread or "RFI: Where did that Hardcore Thread Go?". I couldn't find the original thread referencing formation 100!

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

that comp looks great vahid

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a 2-disc kemet comp around on slsk called 'jungle to jungle'. fair amount of familiar stuff, but loads of nice stuff I at best vaguely recollect as well. not sure about the $47 asking price at the only place I saw it online though...

simon in copenhagen (simon r), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

cheapie recommendation:
this is unbelievable.

it combines this tracklist with this in a 4 box set.

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck, the first tracklist is this

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
man disc three of this just rifled through my utencil drawer and made off with the good silver

strng hlkngtn, Friday, 6 May 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

xpost yeah i never understood one-track mixes either [...] jeff mills liquid room, etc)

I much prefer that mix (split into three parts) like that than I did his "Exhibitionist" set from last year which was split by track and suffered for it (especially ripped to MP3!). When every track is truncated down to 30 seconds to two minutes in length it's fairly pointless in practice.

Of course Exhibitionist was patchy as hell to put it politely (I sold it), so maybe that isn't much of a comparison.

fandango (fandango), Friday, 6 May 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

circa 1995 clearance bin finds:

"CRAZY JUNGLE RHYTHMS VOL. 1" ($4.99) (mutant soundsystem)

1. in between the lines (is this ss?) - '95 rampage
2. ma2 (dj ss) - hearing is believing
3. rude & deadly - "mash them down"
4. s gachet + audiomaze - dreamer (nookie remix)
5. dynamic duo (bizzy b?) - "the shadow"
6. dj ss - rollage
7. dj nut nut - special dedication
8. trinity (dilly?) - i sellasie i

i think this one was compiled by mickey finn ... it says "mixed" but the songs aren't mixed ... there's no space between tracks.

"JUNGLE MIX" ($1.99 used) (k-tel records!!)

1. shy fx - original nuttah
2. general levy - scheming
3. phuture assassins - roots'n'future (dub)
4. general pecos - wickedest thing around
5. timmi magic + psg - tell me
6. shy fx - simple tings
7. soundman + don lloydie feat elisibaeth troy - greater love
8. a class crew (

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 7 May 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

8. a class crew (

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 7 May 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

hmmm ... fucking formatting!!!

8. a class crew (BEST NAME EVER) - ruff neck business
9. remarc - RIP
10. the dream team - stamina

(tagline: "REGGAE + TECHNO meet in ... JUNGLE MIX")

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 7 May 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

jesus christ man, i gotta move to SF already

strng hlkngtn, Saturday, 7 May 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

i mean, the discs are from 95. i found these about a month ago.

i never bought the formation comp ($45!!!) but i did pick up "king of the jungle" vols 1-2. both discs of vol 1 have been burning up the car stereo for months now.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 7 May 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

xpost d00d i am in san diego! i can only imagine what i would accomplish spend in SF!

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 7 May 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

haha holy crap i just noticed the "k-tel" thing

hey vahid, i was also looking at that old "the OTHER broken beat" thread (delsin et al) that you started...you heard anything good in that vein lately?

strng hlkngtn, Saturday, 7 May 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

paul meme's abstract 2step mix ;-)

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 7 May 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

seriously though, nothing i didn't mention there except this recloose comp, which is almost (but not quite) garden-variety broken beat anyway. those labels seemed to sort of die on the vine ... or the distribution did, not sure which.

there is a track on the new idjut boys mix purportedly by mark de clive-lowe called "slide" which is pretty brain-rearranging. listen here... but it sounds different on the guy's album, so i'm wondering if this is actually jackson's "radio ca ca" (jackson of the notorious m83 remix).

also i am still trying to find this comp ...

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 7 May 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

yeah that recloose cd has been on the old "wants" list (thumbs dog eared copy of "goldmine") (barfs) for a while now. i am sure i can find it on slsk but i just forget whenever i sign on.

i like broken beat; i just wish it would be a bit more "tech."

strng hlkngtn, Saturday, 7 May 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

Vahid, can you send me an mp3 of that Trinity track? I've been looking for it for ages full-length/unmixed (and I'd rather not buy this comp as I have everything else on it umpteen times over.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 8 May 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

todays find: "hard core classics - volume 1" (castle communications) ($4.99)

1. brainbomb (brained out mix) - psi dimension
2. re-baptized by by dub - criminal minds
3. joy rider (badman vs babylon) - criminal minds
4. ecstasy is a science - bizzy b
5. smoke it - dragonfly
6. rhythm 93 - bay b kane
7. window in the sky (monolythikmaniak) - acen
8. let me be your fantasy - baby d
9. we are hardcore - the house crew
10. bouncer (housequake) - kicks like a mule
11. far out - sonz of de loop de loop (sic!!)
12. hardcore u know the score - hypnotist
13. psychomania (sykik mix) - psychomania
14. music takes you - blame

i have no idea who is "psi dimension" but apparently "psychomania" = one "jonathan williams" from surrey (?) ...

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

alex, which email should i send it to? yr yahoo address? also, it's unmixed but it may not be unedited ... it's only about 4 minutes long as it appears on my CD.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

this is the greatest collection of unheralded early jungle I've come across I think. The Exclusive VIP Mixes of Radical Sound's "What Is Love" and Dub Technicians' "Analogue Pressure" are both incomparably awesome, the former would probably be in my list of top ten jungle tracks ever.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

OMG this is incredibly classic ... i am drooling over that label! i have never seen a single one of those discs, ever!

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

Yahoo! would be great, thanks! I think it's only about 4 and 1/2 minutes on 12".

Those Strictly Hardcore comps are all really good.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

I find it hilarious that Strictly Hardcore of all labels would make a comp so blatantly self-satisfied with its own "intelligence". I'm assuming it was tongue in cheek ("has NO JUNGLE ON IT!")

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

Haha they were just blatantly satisfied with making money as far as I can tell though. They released a million different versions of the same tracks (VIP mixes, dubplates, remixes) on comps months apart. I thought I had that Jungle Soundclash thing, but it's actually the Hardcore Junglistic Fevers that I have but they have virtually of the SAME tracks!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

i own way too much of this shit

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

i'm turning into one of those guys buying vol. 19 of pebbles or back from the grave

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

or worse, italo disco curios! (arrrrrrrrrrgh)

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

We are, but those guys had a little subculture around it! Where are our fanzines and DODGY compilations dammit?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

Don't say Knowledge haha.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

bomber jackets and lyrca hot pants for everyone

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

Ick. No.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

they're our mop tops and beatle boots, though

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

*sniff*

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
HOLY SHIT i just got my copies of jungle soundclash 1+2 in the mail!! SO EXCITED!!!

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

yum

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

i still listen to jungle too! i'm checking the tracklist of these comps and don't recognize any of these names... is it good or what? i've got this one

Amon (eman), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 01:54 (twenty years ago)

i only know about 2 tunes on each of those jungle soundclash discs

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

All the Jungle Massive's are good (4 is the best one though.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

3 and 4 look good, Marvellous Cain representin on both

Amon (eman), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

the ratio of ruff:smooth on these tracks is exactly perfect. i think it has to do with making sure all of your tracks have at least one classic rocksteady sample and at least one cosmic synth in addition to all of the rollage and amen and subbass.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, they were kind of Labello Blanco's slightly inferior answer to Subbase's Drum and Bass Selection series (minus the DJ Hype mixes too, I guess.) The 2nd through the 4th DnB Selections are still the best jungle CDs probably ever. Great selections and even most of the familiar tracks are different VIP mixes or often better than original remixes.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

Did you ever send me that Trinity track Vahid?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

i know.. and i used to come across those subbase comps in the tower cutout bin and still pass on them, grrrrr

Amon (eman), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

twelve years pass...

not the comp mentioned in this thread, but this is SO GOOD
