Anyone going to any of the Kraftwerk gigs (UK) this week?

and is it true they've gone laptop?

Nik (Nik), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll let you know. Going to see them on saturday

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes they've gone laptop. I practically fell asleep standing.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not listening lalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalala!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

how much time was spent playing things from the new album

(Jon L), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

There were, from memory, no tracks except 'Tour De France' - the old version. But I didn't have the album at the time. They did do one new track, or maybe it was just a very obscure old track, I don't know.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

their set for the current tour features all the old favourites - someone posted the set from their Helsinki and it bodes very well indeed - i'm worried they won't play 'The Model' tho, looking forward to comparing the Ether show with the main event on Saturday (but WHY the midnight extra show?? and will this be the real piece de resistance?)

the laptop thing is interesting - they've honed their stage image to this minimal level dismissing the view of working with analogue equipment live - i don't mind this as i expect the tracks to sound great regardless of how they're being performed. plus they've mentioned before how they're more interested in music without the musicians in this live context, one step closer...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going on Saturday. Hopefully it'll be louder than the last time I saw them (1991 I think), when they were so quiet you could easily talk over them. Do they still use the robots though?

udu wudu (udu wudu), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

if they play 'the robots', then they're going to use the robots

onstage movement was already extremely minimal & sequencer driven, I don't mind the move to laptops. I'm interested in whether they've done any further software-based retooling of the earlier material.

the '98 retool of 'numbers' was religious.

(Jon L), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty sure Florian tilted his head slightly at one point during the gig.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

live music!

(Jon L), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

(but WHY the midnight extra show??

I'll let you know. I decided this one would be the most full-on.

Nik (Nik), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll try and post on Thursday - driving to Manchester from Bristol for Wednesday night's show.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i had tickets to glasgow & rfh but i'm too sick to go to either.
beyond gutted. :(

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone going to shout for "Ruckzeug"?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and shouting "FAR AWAY!!!" will be somewhat cool.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll be shouting for 'Lutton/Tech Talk'!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going from Cardiff to the RFH on Thursday. I hate Britain's rail system with an indescribable passion

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm there on saturday. Sorry for you Zappi :(

flowersdie (flowersdie), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

too sick? are you in an iron lung? nothing else would keep me away

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

sure, thats easy to say :(

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i got a birds eye view of what they were doing in glasgow tonight so for anyone nerdy, here's what they were up to. if you haven't been to see them yet, you might want to skip reading this as i wouldn't wwant to spoil it for you.

the mac zealots will be sad to hear that kraftwerk use sony vaios though i'm suspicious as to whether they were actually switched on as when it faded to black between songs, there was no light emitting from them.

kraftwerk is and will always be hutter and schneider but the other two guys were actually doing a whole lot more than the previous other two guys used to do. one of them was controlling and manipulating all the drum tracks while the other one was doing some counter melodies to florian schneider's parts. he was also doing a lot of manipulation to the sounds too. he went a bit ott on the filtering at a couple of points. schneider was doing most of the singing and playing most (but not all) of the melodies. some of the melodies were on the backing track. i love the fact that he played a bum note at one point though i have a sneaky suspicion he did it on purpose. schneider was positively rocking out at points as opposed to hutter who might actually have been dead. this was weird as the other times i saw them, hutter was all smiles and full of movement. i honestly don't think he did anything all night except sing a few lines and jam a percussion break down. all four of them had a midi controller pedal but hutter and schneider each had another foot activated box which i think allowed them to pass control of the backing track to each other. the only time this was used was when hutter did his little jam. the rest of the time i think he was checking his email or watching pr0n.

anyway, that was the best i have ever seen them and the updated synth sounds were simply gorgeous as were some of the drum sounds (i could have done without the 909 bits though). the drum sounds on 'metal on metal' nearly made me wet myself. outstanding! the way it was synced to the video was poetry in motion.

my only real disappointment was that they didn't play 'spacelab' or 'computer love' and that they didn't bring out the pocket calculators on 'pocket calculator'. when hutter has done his hendrix pastiche in the past, it has been hilarious.

anyway, fantastic stuff, wouldn't have missed it for the world, and you have got to love the kraftwerk sense of humour.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you got Ralf And Florian mixed up. Florian is the bald one who stands on the right. Ralf is on the left and sings.
Fantastic gig.

Andy Jay, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

One of the other guys i remember played the last time at the Barrowlands on The Mix tour.

Andy Jay, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha! that means for over 20 years i've had the two of them mixed up. my stupidity never ceases to amaze me sometimes.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

So did I until a couple of years ago. Apparently it's a common mistake. So apologies to Florian for thinking he was the gay one.

Andy Jay, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the calculator bit behind them on the screens were great for Pocket Calculator. Great version.
The updated Radioactivity was incredible too.
There was a fantastic atmosphere in the Academy. 1st time i've been there.

Andy Jay, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

indeed, the atmosphere was great and yup, the calculator bit was fab, as was most of the video stuff. i love their obsession with 50's germany but i do wonder if the kraftwerk vocal style would exist if godard's 'alphaville' hadn't.

that new intro to radioactivity was great, wasn't it? i had a lump in my throat at several points during the gig. those melodies do strange things to me.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks twitch, looking forward to this even more now

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

heres my brothers attempt to cheer me up via email this morning (i sent him my ticket)

"I'm the operator with my pocket calcula..tor....

Man those Kraftwerk dudes are seriously strange.. A good night though.
Cheers for sending the tickets .. I think ya would've liked it..

They played all the classics.. Man Machine, The Robots (With the working ACE Robots), Tour De France. etc.. Oh.. and daft costume changes which consisted of a flashing tie? and the crazy TRON-esk green suits!!!!"

bastard!!!

zappi (joni), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

So apologies to Florian for thinking he was the gay one.

You callin' the 'werk gay, muthafucka?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i want the Tron suit

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

and the T.E.E. suit

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait until you see the robots. I want one of those ties they had with their black suits and red shirts.

Andy Jay, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

it was somewhat longish, but the heights were - wuthering...

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

my black tie is pretty long but maybe it's not thin enough

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Does it have flashing red lights?

Andy Jay, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The suits, demeanour, and staging did bring to mind a Powerpoint presentation. The audience really should have been issued with laminated name badges just to round out the illusion.

Not that the Powerpointy aspects of it were a bad thing, though, not at all. Unlike the electric pyjamas at the end. Which were a bad thing.

Neil Willett (Neil Willett), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Just left the Manchester show. Very, very good indeed - Man Machine, EXPO2001, TBF s/t 2003, Radioactivity, TDF, TEE, Autobahn, The Model, Neon Lights, ComputerWorld, The Robots, Vitamins, Aerodynamik, Numbers, ends with Music Non-Stop. Have missed a couple in there, and in the wrong order.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

when i saw them at tribal gathering (luton '98), i cried when they played played the eco-friendly "The Mix" version of radioactvity.

can't wait, till saturday!!

Buy your Ralf & Florian t-shirts here.

Kraftwerk Tickets For Sale

Les, Thursday, 18 March 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Still very, very happy with Kraftwerk last night. Flashing ties, robots (with new heads), Tron suits.

Agree that Florian appears to do nothing, perhaps made most plain during Music NonStop when everyone else leaves Ralf to it and the sound doesn't really degrade by much...

Plus Phil Oakey was standing not 10 feet away during the entire show - which was perhaps exciting enough in itself. :-)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 18 March 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone heard the new 'aerodynamik' remixes? worth buying? it is the best track on the new album, 'white lines' reference and all

(Jon L), Thursday, 18 March 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

the remixes are ok - kraftwerk's own being the best, francois kervorkian's being typically fk and the gopher / decrecy being acid house.

stirmonster, Thursday, 18 March 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Good Lord! Click Here!

Wouldn't It Be Nice To Have The Cash?

Andy Jay, Friday, 19 March 2004 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

good lord. my Vertigo oscilloscope twofer pressing will do just nicely thanks.

they really should reissue those first three and get it over with. there are many times when the first one is the best thing they ever did. usually while I'm listening to it.

(Jon L), Friday, 19 March 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I couldn't believe the prices when I found them. Honestly folks click those 2 links. Then dig in your attics!

Andy Jay, Friday, 19 March 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

sold my Brixton spare for only £30 :(

last night was of course superb. why do i always mix up Ralf and Florian? for the first encore when they all came back on stage Florian was last on and did an 'old man stagger' clutching his heart - the old jokester, it was quite endearing. also when they left the stage one by one as 'Musique Non Stop' climaxed he took a bow and ran off goblin-style, Fritz and Henning did a jaunty skip - leaving Ralf on his own to say 'goonight, see you in Brixton'. Ralf's vocals were good but his bopping towards the end was rather dad-like, again most endearing :)

the set iirc:

Intro
The Man Machine
Expo 2000 (remix)
Tour De France 03 (remix)
Vitamin
Tour De France (original)
Autobahn
The Model
Neon Lights
Sellafield (Radioactivity Intro)
Radioactivity
Trans Euro Express

Numbers
Computer World
It's More Fun To Compute/Homecomputer
Pocket Calculator

The Robots

Elektro-Kardiogramm
Aerodymanik
Boing Boom Tschak/Music Non-Stop

stevem (blueski), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

the Brixton gig was great. Though it was really annoying that some guy a foot taller than me had to stand RIGHT in front of me for half the gig, so I couldn't see a single thing :(

The set was the same as the one that steve went to on thurs i think. It was a strange gig to watch though. I'm not used to watching dance acts live anyway, where they hide behind a table full of buttons, it was a bit fustrating not being able to work out who played which parts, which is something I tend to do at live shows. But the video display made up for that I guess.

The robots were great too, especially how they weren't actually in sync, so ruining the effect a little.

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 21 March 2004 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Such a thighslapper he did it at the RFH as well...

:'(

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 21 March 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my god that RULED!! geeta I wish you were here dude, I had an extra ticket that I ended up selling to a scalper. At first he said thirty was too much so we were like "okay, whatever" and then he caught up with us, called me a cunt, and said "okay then, thirty." I know he probably sold it for like 50.

Atmosphere in Brixton Academy not all that - it was a little unfocused, maybe owing to wide-open music-hall origins of the space. We got a couple of good clap-along bits going though. Autobahn --> Model --> Neon Lights is the perfect order, ending with a perfect song.

Worst I thought was Music Non-stop, just had no punch for me, and the video was uninspired.

Best vid bit was Trans-Europe Express, where the clattery metal noises synced up to train parts slamming into one another. It had a kind of juvenile silent-movie glee.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 21 March 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

At one point there's a vocoder voice reading grim statistics about radioactivity, while the statistics scroll down the huge screen behind the band. The three guys behind me are going "whoooooooooooo!!! All RIGHT!!! YEAH!!!"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 21 March 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The atmosphere in Glasgow was utterly incredible. Everyone was dancing and cheering and clapping. Even people punching the air. Those up in the seats made a massive noise by stamping their feet. Incredible up for it atmosphere. Really was.
It's hard to say what was the highlight as there was so many!

Robin Smith, Sunday, 21 March 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The atmosphere at Brixton was disappointing, no one round where i was standing was really grooving along. Too reverentially polite.

Nik (Nik), Sunday, 21 March 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to the RFH show. The Man Machine intro was very very powerful, matched only by the Radioactivity/Trans Europe Express sequence abt halfway through. A lot of the time, the beautifully stage-managed lighting/sound/visuals combo made me think of performance art, and afterwards my friend Rachael mentioned Gilbert and George, which made sense to me. The gig worked as a fantastic catalogue/guided tour/greatest hits of their few, lovingly cherished, obsessions - w/ speed, technology, the body, the future, blahdiblah. Their vision of the future now looks to the past - there are no 'modern' cars or trains in the films screened behind the group, and the Sellafield/politics-of-nuclear-protest hark back to the 1980s, or even to Hutter+Schneider's Organisation roots in (deadly 'serious') avant-garde pranksterism+practice.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Sunday, 21 March 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

did they change the verse from Trans Europe Express that goes "...meet Iggy Pop and David Bowie" to something else?

Nik (Nik), Sunday, 21 March 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

it was that same RFH gig that i meant - Florian was disappointingly sombre on Saturday :( Tracer OTM all over except 'Music Non-Stop' totally kicks, and the video is the 1986 original, when wireframe faces were state of the fucking art meng

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 21 March 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Gilbert and George / Ralf and Florian. G+G made their big international breakthrough in 1969 (or 1970?) via a performance at a gallery in where? Dusseldorf! It was of course their "Singing Sculpture" performance, which makes even more sense.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 22 March 2004 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, I've just reread it... Ralf went a lot of the way to *making* it for me, when the rest of the band's movements are barely discernable (if you're about eight rows from the back like I was, at any rate) he was the one supplying that slightly jerky and out of sync humanity that's the overriding appeal about Kraftwerk. It's quite difficult to explain...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 22 March 2004 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Tour de France (new) was one of the highlights for me. The visuals were astonishing. The paths of the cyclists filled in, followed by the contours of the surrounding hills. I really love the song in its own right, anyway. I also loved the Man Machine, but part of that was first-of-the-night excitement. That vitamin one also had mind-blowing visuals.

My enjoyment was somewhat spoiled by 'karaoke' Kraftwerk going on around me. Worst such moment was Tour de France (orig), which was greeted with 'der-der-der-der-da-da-di-der-der-der-dum-dum' every time the synth hook came round. Grrrr...

Oh and a hippy jigging and shouting 'Oh I love this one' and then singing whole chunks of The Model. Yikes.

http://www.sleeve-notes.com/pics/kraftwerk1.jpg

it's this image that will stay with me forever (the red lights came on just as the looping synth melody chimes in on 'Man Machine') - but as Cis pointed out, Florian's 'jazz hands' dramatise the scene further, i don't remember seeing him move his hands at all tho - and it was funny when Fritz tried to ask him something and couldn't get his attention haha

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Waaaaaaaaaaa! I thought no-one had spare tickets!!

Harvey's photies are grate...

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-haaaa...

Sarah (starry), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Brixton - as soon as I saw the marquee I turned into a giddy fan. Sound was amazing, and I can't fault the performance, they exceed all expectations. Obviously I was very disappointed Bartos wasn't there to sing 'computer love', and that they didn't do the countdown on the curtain before, as they did at tribal gathering, more exciting than Y2K imho. Admittedly I did find myself staring at my shoe for a bit when they played Vitamin, but apart from that it was one of the best gigs I've seen. Here's a photo.

nick.K (nick.K), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend of mine whom I work with knows Kraftwerk. Indeed, two members went over to her house for a meal before the gigs. If the gigs were good, I can only assume her standard of cooking and dinner party chat kept 'em on high. The same reasons go if their performances were bad.

KS, Monday, 22 March 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think ANY gig will ever match that Tribal '97 voib, everyone went beseark when they started with a slowed down 'Numbers' - but the spazzy voice effects on the latest version go SOME way to compensating

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I was at the first Brixton show on Saturday, and I was wondering if maybe Dr Evil's silhouette might have been inserted into the silhouette photograph posted above? (Don't recall much in the way of hand-lifting myself).

What an astonishing show, though! I was kicking myself on the way out that I hadn't got tickets to the late show so I could watch them all over again. And just how great was 'Metal on Metal'?

M Carty (mj_c), Monday, 22 March 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The hand-lifting was in the late show.

Along with Ralf's mouth-cupping.

two weeks pass...
Hi, I'm new here and hoping this thread is still getting looked at. This is the second time I read Ralf was gay and I'm curious. Andy Jay, did you get that from Rollingstone.com as well, or some more reliable source?

As for Nik's hand-lifting pic... *ROTFL*

Follically challenged Florian always had me thinking of Max Schreck in the 1926 silent movie "Nosferatu". Gee, does anoyne possibly think Florian has heard this comment himself? that shadow play just tops it off! what a riot!!

shatterprone, Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard a rumour a few years back, then I read something on rollingstone.com too. Until a few years ago I thought both were married but according to Pascal Bussy's book I got from the library Ralf lives with his sister but alone in the sense he has part of the house all to himself. This of course doesnt mean he is gay.
Considering how private they are it's no surprise theres rumours with no foundation around.
