It wasn't that long ago that I got into a big argument with my grandmother when she heard me listening to Little Richard and started going on about how he had no voice and although I'm a forgiving man and she's family, them's fightin' words.

What's the biggest altercation that your love for an artist has gotten you into?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I went out with a girl and we were always arguing about music. We did like a bunch of the same stuff but there a couple of things in particular that we butted heads on big time.
1) she liked Bryan Adams. Quite often, I stated my negative opinions about him. She didn't appreciate my comments.
2) I was obsessed with this MBV bootleg at the time, and every time we got in the car there was a fight over the volume knob.
Eventually, I reluctantly took her to a Pulp gig and ended up ignoring her for the whole night, and pissed her off to the extent that she basically hated my guts and we broke up about a week later.
There's no way I could make this shit up.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

it's too craaaaaaaaaaaazy!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I made the colossal mistake of saying 'Bob Dylan is crap' to a barmaid who wouldn't serve me for the rest of the night. DOH.

regards,

REB

Fortunately, I'm not nearly as much of an asshole about such things as I used to be so I haven't been in any serious musical altercations for several years now.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I told my metalhead brother that Slayer sucked. He ddin't speak to me for over a week. It's not that I think Slayer sucks, I actually really like them, I just wanted to piss him off.

Cacaman Flores, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, God hates them so they must be a bit sucky.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw this thread title, and I was like, "Andrew WK has a new album already?"
I'm sort of disappointed. Someone needs to make an album called this.

Huck, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, Colin, but how about a hand for B2D's wonderful riposte?

Huck, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

my former boss bought the last bowie best-of, and said that he liked one-half of it and thought that the rest was weird crap. i quit the next day!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

another former boss brought up celine dion for some reason. he left the office, and i muttered under my breath that celine dion was complete crap, and was told by a co-worker that the boss LOVED celine dion.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

My mother was really fixated on Mick Jagger being the last word in filthy, Satan-worshiping, libidinous depravity, which really used to piss me off. I mean, for chrissakes, the man's now a KNIGHT! It's not that he wasn't those things to many people's minds for a while, but I was never able to convince my mother that there were other perpetratos FAR, FAR, FAR WORSE than the comparitively estimable Sir Jagger. "MOM, GG ALLIN SHITS ON STAGE, EATS IT, ASSUALTS THE AUDIENCE, ETC!" She wasn't buyin' it. None worse than Jagger, she'd insist (and still insists). She acutely grimaces at the sight of the Stones' tongue logo, which -- of course -- prompted me (never a huge Stones fan) to buy several t-shirts with that image on it, just to ruffle her feathers.

I once drunkenly punched one of my friends in the face for calling Fishbone bland.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Zappa v. Beefheart fallouts - too numerous to mention

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

A girl made me miss an Autechre live PA in 1996, to this day I give her dirty looks when I see her.

Oher than that I got into a fist fight because I insisted that the beatles were the worst thing to happen to music in the 20th century, and that the Beach Boys and the VU were the most important bands of the 60's.

The Rebukes of Hazard (mjt), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

That's just because the beatles copyists were rub. by and large, while the Beach Boys and VU copyists were generally interesting...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I was deejaying at a college function many years ago, playing a freeform set that was being well received, when some dirty hippie freshman told me that my music was "bumming everyone out". Normally, I would have politely disagreed and sent him on his way, but it a beutiful day, the set was going really well, and I was drunk on whiskey, so I told him "back the fuck off now or I'll slit your fucking throat."

I am not proud of this memory.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

You should be

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, DJs everywhere applaud you. You have the heart of a lion.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"back the fuck off now or I'll slit your fucking throat."

hahah this is going to be my stock response to dj requests from now on

don, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

My stock response was always "We're not playing that till later!"

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine was, "I'll see what I can do", with a big smile. But Colin's changed all that. Thanks, Colin.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Live to serve, dude.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

That's just because the beatles copyists were rub. by and large, while the Beach Boys and VU copyists were generally interesting...

This idea deserves its own thread, methinks. I'm not going to make it, but somebody ought to.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"back the fuck off now or I'll slit your fucking throat."

YEAH!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Colin's response must be celebrated more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I refuse to pretend to like Sting, who is among my girlfriend's faves. (She's otherwise very cool and likes lots of good music, too.) She's threatened to kick my ass over this more than once, but generally just withholds sex.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Thursday, 18 March 2004 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 18 March 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was maybe thirteen, I was telling my 19-y.o. brother that the kids at my jr. high school were just so closed-minded you couldn't say something like "Jethro Tull sucks" without getting beat up and before I even finish my sentence he punches me hard in the stomach for even daring to say that, regardless of context. (I think before that I was actually well-disposed to liking them...without, you know, actually hearing any of their stuff or anything like that.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 18 March 2004 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(I know, I know... time zones are screwing with me. I'll call, I swear.)
