Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

nobody really wants me to post the contents of my 134KB excel file of my wants list

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 06:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't buy Light Years. Just get a copy of the title track and "Your Disco Needs You" - both are absolutely perfect, and stand out like sore thumbs on an otherwise very poor album.

Finisterre is great, lots of threads on this in 2002.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

that yo la tengo album is probably their only inessential album since 'fakebook'..

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

one record is jumping out at me from your list and it is: Ramones - s/t !

as for my list, most of em are rare enough that I can't chance the one vinyl copy that appears getting snatched
but teasing like that is unfair, so:
you'd be surprised at how hard it is to find certain Replacements and Caetano Veloso records on my current list
nowadays Gemm, Netsounds and Musicstack are tapped out on quite a few things!

Paul (scifisoul), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 06:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha I've got Jim beat (mine is in 202KB ACCESS database!) Same answer applies too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Buy Neutral Milk Hotel right now. If the music stores in your area are closed, break in.

Black Dice, David Banner, and the new Destroyer should be the priorities after that.

Explosions in the Sky, Ride, and Low are all nice enough, but not essential... you should wait until you find them used or something.

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Sonoko - 'La Debutante'

Patrick South (Patrick South), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Notes to Gear! :
First, let me chime in that anyone with any interest in folk
should purchase Neutral Milk Hotel's _In An Aeroplane_ immediately.
And everyone else should, too, for that matter.

I bought Destroyer's _Streethawk_ based on his pleasant
contributions to the New Pornographers, only to be assaulted
by aggressive shrieking on most of the tracks. Now, mind you,
I'm not against unusual vocals, but these were remarkably
whiny, annoying, and out of place against their melodic
background. Will Bejar ever again sing in a straightforward (listenable)
manner?

Secondly, one Ramones album should suffice for most
consumers, due to their tendency to shamelessly recycle.

Thirdly, David Banner's _Missisipi: The Album_, though is to be
commended for it's sheer amount of phlegm, is tedious, rehashed,
and not improved by Banner's tendency to sound like a high school
bully with developmental issues. On a positive note, why aren't more
rappers fearless enough to release under their honest-to-goodness
names?

Here's my wishlist:

Jeeva - 1-2-3-4
Joss Stone - The Soul Sessions
Kaada - Thank You For Giving Me Your Valuable Time
Leaves - Breathe
Lifesavas - Spirit In Stone
RJD2 - Dead Ringer
Sufjan Stevens - Welcome To Michigan

Last words: Red Krayola = insanely inventive cerebro-pop,
but Amon Duul II = try before you buy.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

David Banner is not his real name. (think where you've heard that surname before)

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Secondly, one Ramones album should suffice for most
consumers, due to their tendency to shamelessly recycle.

Blasphemous. I'll pray for you my child.

scottontharox (scottkundla), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea"

You need this album. Every home should have a copy of this.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 08:16 (twenty-two years ago)

mississippi john hurt - avalon blues
scritti politti - cupid & psyche

the raincoats - s/t (I used to have it on tape but the tape started to wear down then I gave it back to the person I borrowed it from without telling him of its terrible condition)

that is all I can think of at present

chicago, now! (chicago, now!), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

as per other thread .. my Wantlist is kinda slim these days as i have just about all i really want - except one album i 'need' on cd. CA$H by Nasty Rox Inc(ZTT). no real reason other than i have it on tape and i want proper full blown hifi quality. other wants : The Earlies album when completed, Madlib's Trojan mixtape (in the shops but damn pricey !), Yoda/Greenpeace Unthugged mix (proper released version, i have the double booty). but top of my list is NRI.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

...but amazing how many of the stuff on people's wantlists I already have, lucky me.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

If anyone knows where (online) I might get the La Peste comp on Matador, I'd be extremely grateful. Cheers in advance.

Gear -
Black Dice: good
Explosions In The Sky: overrated
Weird War: better than the first one
Cooper Temple Clause: fuck no

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

that yo la tengo album is probably their only inessential album since 'fakebook'..

ooh, that's harsh on 'fakebook'. okay, so its a little light and insubstantial but to some extent that was the point. it was yo la tengo having a bit of fun, and i think that comes across. the covers of 'emulsified' and 'my griselda' make me smile every time. and i'm usually a miserable get so that's quite an achievement.

x-post... 'finisterre' isn't essential, though it pains me to say it. i found that the spoken parts in between songs sound contrived, where they sounded amusing on 'so tough' and the sequence that the songs are placed on the album just seems...wrong somehow. there are some great songs on there, and re-organised it could be one of their better albums (though not their best) but as it is, i'd recommend getting yourself as many different versions of 'tiger bay' (apparently there are three) as possible, first.

and there's only one album on my wants list. and you'll laugh at me if i tell you what it is. i am currently trying not to read reviews, as they will only make me feel worse about having no money.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

if anyone has it and could tape or CDR it for me:

mauricio kagel- staatstheater
john cage- ryoanji (60 min version on hat art)
stockhausen- kurzwellen

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah Julio, you know I have "Kurzwellen"!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

but will you tape it for me dada? *winky*

also: sun city girls- box of chameleons 3 CD thingy has become some sort of psych holy grail for me.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I have that box of chameleons thing. Is it really hard to find? Or maybe they didn't make that many?
Julio - I will be sending that Wildman Fischer tape to you shortly.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Anything by Fabio, but something tells me this is not a serious enough choice and I should be looking for more credible albums. I mean if I weren't already known for my crap music collection people might start thinking I was uncool.

Shit, if I really cared I'd dye my hair black and get those alterno person black rimmed glasses. Anyone got any more suggestions for my trashy album collection?

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I have Box of Chameleons too if yr needing a copy. It's friggin' Crossdressers that I really feel the urge to have in my hot clammy paws.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought the deluxe vinyl reissue of crossdressers a couple years back. What do they make like 500 copies of this stuff or something? The vinyl copy is beautiful. i can't remember who put it out. was the original a tape or cd?

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It was Locust that reissued it (ach, but I was too slow), came out on double CD on Abduction originally. Picked up Dante's at the time instead...

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

nickB- I'll should be able to d/l crossdressers from slsk (been getting quite a few sun city girls albs).

scott- thanks for the tape.

any sun city releases are hard to find over here and only 500 copies of sun city albs are made (their reasoning is that everything will sell out, which is fair enough as long as I'm one of the 500).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio, make sure to get yourself Live From Planet Boomerang when you're downloading - one of the best I've heard.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

julio and nick, any of these albums from Locust a must-must-must-hear:

http://www.locustmusic.com/catalog.html

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I've got it already and I love it so. have the second disc of dante's, its really funny.

x-post

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah Scott, don't show me that you bastard!!! I've got Wooden Guitar and one of the Flynt's but, alas, none of the rest. Oh my...

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I sold a lot of my sun city vinyl years ago and the thought of it meakes me very very sad. I started buying more recent stuff on cd in philly cuz there was always a lot of it around and now i wish i had bought more cuz where i am living is SCG-free.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

haha scott I don't wanna go broke ;)

have you got that allen ginsberg record? alan watts? the chris delauranti I have (not that one) rocks like crazy.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think i need any Leary, Ginsberg, or Watts. That much i know.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Scott, wanna buy a copy of Midnight Cowboys? ;o)

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like when people talk about RRR records on ILM and i check the website out of curiousity and i go: "holy crap, look at these 5000 weirdo noise records i've nerve heard. I need them all!!" but there are so many that i end up buying none of them. too daunting to climb that screechy mountain.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm, I have a Boy Dirt Car live thing I never listen to, maybe I should...

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The RRR store isn't very far from me actually, i should head out there sometime.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Wear a large hat, lest your head explodes.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

What I think I want to buy next (though this will probably change in a day or two, because it always does):

Salsa:

Colon/Blades: Matiendo Mano (sp?)
Joe Cuba/Cheo Felciano: Steppin' Out, Diggin' the Most
Kako y Azuquita
The second vol. of the Lavoe Fania legends set

My Oldies:

Neil Young: Decade [amazing that I don't own this]
Jimi Hendriz: Electric Lady Land

Also:

Willie Nelson: Crazy

Newish:

Assif Tsahar/Cooper-Moore: America
Borah Bergman: Meditations for Piano
Wayne Horvitz/[forgot the other name]: Mylab
AEC: Third Decade

Cedric Im Brooks: The Light of Saba [old material, actually]

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep postponing buying that Louis Armstrong "Hot Fives And Sevens" box.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Gear! I would buy the Mekons record off your list, as well as Low's Long Division - maybe their best album. Also, instead of all those Ramones records get Hey Ho! Let's Go! The Anthology.

My current wantlist:

The Ponys Laced with Romance
The Homos box on H2D
Baby Dodds Talking and Drum Solos
Circle Guillotine
Metal Urbain Anarchy in Paris
The Glands Double Thriller

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and More Heavenly cause I just have Vs Satan

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

What's with the Red Krayola fetish? They ain't all that.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just been meaning to hear them for a long time and I liked music where the people allegely can't play their instruments. I wouldn't know if they are all that or not yet.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Allegedly being the operative word - try The Godz for lack of musical ability on a truly heroic scale

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

... plus a few others had mentioned Red Krayola, not just directed at you

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, well I was just answering for myself. I've been meaning to listen to the Gods and Fugz too, I just did all that off the top of my head.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Red Krayola are easily the most "musical" of that lot

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I like music!

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I do too!

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the token rap picks are adorable

the only thing i want right now is

warren zevon - "leave my monkey alone (latin rascals dub)"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, I used to see a Red Krayola CD with both those albums on it all the time - on Charly Records, if memory serves. Where you at?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm actually listening to Soft Rock by Lifter Puller right now.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

the vinyl reissues of those red krayola albums probably aren't that hard to find on-line.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Critical Beatdown by Ultramagnetic Mc's -> in my fave token rap list. along with MC Cutie Jess "There's a beaver on my monkey (in my dreams mix)"

The Homos box on H2D -> Do you mean the Homosexuals? I think I received a promo of the Homosexuals. I only remember disliking it intensely.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

A Homo Promo in other words?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Cee-Lo (or I think I do but I'm kinda waffling....I love I'll Be Around)

A-Frames 2 (which I still haven't purchased even though I lurv the first one to death)

New TV on the Radio

New Blonde Redhead

Royce the 5 9 New one (I read a really good review on allhiphop and someone here (Sterling maybe) gave it big ups)

First PIL record (which I don't own for some odd reason)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I don't have the 1st 2 PiL albums down here in Londinium so have been eyeing an ancient 2CD box of them I've come across - but being as it looks like a really early CD, it'll prob'ly sound crap

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup, the Homosexuals. Coming out this month apparently.

scott m (mcd), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

...impossible to find is more like it. What's this 2CD version of Old Arne Nordheim you speak of?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the version that Rune Grammophon rereleased with the Biosphere/Deathprod CD included. It was insanely expensive when it came out ('98?). Which reminds me to renew my search efforts, maybe it's cheaper now.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

My list is just artists, not albums because it is a downloading want list so what album I find by the artist depends on soulseek.

Laszlo Kovacs (Laszlo Kovacs), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the token rap picks are adorable

Token rap is the best kind. I'd usually just rather listen to Wu-Tang again instead of buying anything new. The last hip-hop album I bought was El-P's last album. I have been burnt out on hip-hop for a while for some reason, so you know = Token.

Except for cLOUDDEAD! I can't get enough of that!

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup, the Homosexuals. Coming out this month apparently.

It's out! It's great - the last thing I bought actually.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the morphius/rer is out, but supposed the big homosexal 3cd thing is supposed to be out this month.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

yep, I am waiting for that one myself. the whole situation is very confusing, is't it?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Got the ACR one not 3 hours ago from a guy at the student market. Well worth picking up.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I got Rocket Redux when I saw RFTT in concert. Best show by elderly people ever!

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i dream of the first 3 Sun City Girls albums being reissued or a kind stranger burning me copies.

notorious big - ready to die

* any Spanish indie pop that takes my fancy
* any Monika/Morr type thing that takes my fancy
* Quarks - whatever their major label album is called
* Queensryche - should I give them another chance?
* The Shins - I just get the feeling that I'll be disappointed
* any J-Pop
* Exodus - greatest hits! (they must have one
* Skid Row - Slave to the Grind (I already have it on tape)
* Some more Dimmu Borgir

am to be the lone voice in the wilderness to rail against the cult
of anti-tokenism? what is wrong with "token" hip-hop?
you rarely see such disdain for electronic heads who buy the
occasional "token" punk or rock album. nay, those people are
celebrated for their bravery.

and yet you scoff as "cute" the inclusion of one hip-hop album
in a diverse collection?

dammit, people, we may not be fanatics, but we are still listening
to hip-hop and enjoying it - why must you waspishly berate us for
our diversity? is it a sin not to share your single-minded
pursuits?

brother john, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I think strongo is just engaging in self-parody at this point.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

wo, wo, unto thee, anti-tokenist hierarchy. your words
and works are an abomination! may your rap-addled brains
are infested with maggots!

as it saith in the book of law: let a man take
unto himself one rap CD, and one rap CD only - thus saith him who
maketh all microphones feed back and amplifiers distort!
one! only one! any more is an abomination!

brother john, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

You are sleeping, Brother John.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

In any case, the two things that immediately come to mind are:

Moldy Goldies: Colonel B. Johnston and His Mystic Knights Band and Street Singers Attack the Hits
Murmurs of Earth CD-ROM

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Two soundtracks on CD:

"Times Square"
and
"National Lampoon's Vacation"

People are selling CDRs of them for like $45 on eBay, but I am just praying some thoughtful ilXor has a copy of either sitting around somewhere...

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"Thorns vs Emperor (2CD version)"

WHAT!?!?! Is this out?!?!?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"Times Square"
and
"National Lampoon's Vacation"

aren't vinyl copies like a dollar though? but i guess if you have to have them on cd...

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

(I don't know why I put Third Decade under "newish." Bizarre.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

There some people who just have to have things on cd, bizarrely enough. So out-of-print cd versions of dollar bin staples, like Wall of Voodoo lps or Billy Squire's Tale of the Tape, routinely eBay for upwards of $70 or $80. It's insanity, I tell ya!

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I am currently in a desperate search for Funk Factory's 1976 self-titled record. I know there's probably a chance that "Rien Ne Va Plus" was a fluke and the rest of the LP could be butt, but still...

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember when VHS copies of Newsies were going for a 100 bucks. Yeah, and all those deleted 80's soundtracks can go pretty high. There used to be a list of the big ones. I can't remember any off-hand.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I have that record. It's ok - but yeah, "Rein Ne Va Plus" is pretty much the standout cut. There really isn't anything else that hits as hard. I'm not a big Polish jazz fan, though; it's more fusiony than funky for the most part.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

menelaus - you've already got divine, what more do you need?

also, i didn't even know about fabio's singing career. i know! you should get the lost boys soundtrack, maybe that oiled and greased uberbuff saxophone guy is on it!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"Thorns vs Emperor (2CD version)"
WHAT!?!?! Is this out?!?!?

This was the (1000 copies?) limited edition version when it originally came out. The second CD contains the Thorns "Grymyrk" and "Trøndertun" demos from 1990 which are vastly superior to the material on the actual Thorns vs Emperor album and haven't been reissued anywhere else. I didn't realize this until the 2CD version was sold out everywhere sadly, and obviously it's never seen in secondhand stores.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I just want them on CD... I don't have a turntable, etc. And though "Times Square"'s OST in easy to find on vinyl, the "Vacation" one is actually very rare (and the CD they pressed was for the release of the DVD of the film, and was a promo item that had dialogue from the movie sprinkled in.
It gets my goat that somebody is making a fortune of off CDRs that they are burning from their vinyl for some reason.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I acquired the Ramones' first one on LP for 8 bucks last night, as well as a copy of "Finisterre" for 8. Jesus, Saint Etienne can really do no wrong.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I am dying to get the entire Mindrockers comp. Can anybody make its soul seekable?
