Search: Air Miami - 'I hate milk', Unrest (most everything apart for the fuck pussy galore etc), Versus (evertyhing although D for them pulling out of ATP a couple of years ago)

Destroy: Tuscadero, Grenadine, eggs, blast off country style, buthc willis

Butch willis - sorry

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: Unrest, Dustdevils

Teenbeat also put out records by Crispy Ambulance and Vomit Launch that I'd like to hear but haven't.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Tube Bar Tapes.

Search: Air Miami, Plus Minus, Versus, Aden, The Pacific Ocean (subjective)
Destroy: Grenadine, True Love Always, The Pacific Ocean (objective)

Sorry, no hidden gems. I'm not real familiar with the label.

Xii (Xii), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Eeek, go easy on Grenadine and Eggs. Grenadine's Goya is certainly searchworthy, and I seem to recall the Eggs LPs having many fine moments.

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

eggs version of "it's hard to be an egg" is great. grenadine have a couple of decent songs but are generally fairly uninspiring.

true love always should have stopped after the first record. they haven't progressed one iota, except that their lyrics get worse and worse. Aden are similar, "Hey 19" is great but that last one is rubbish.

pocket rockets are great. as is tracy shedd. and a few other things i need to think about

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

how could i forget the ultimate release that justifies Teenbeat's existence above all else? the feminine complex "livin' love".

Ropers EP on teenbeat is the band's worst release by far. Rondells stuff generally quite good. i don't really like Sisterhood of Convoluted Thinkers much at all (everything good they did was on 555 records)

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Absobloodylutely! In fact, simply having released the song Forgetting would have been enough justification, imo.

Jez (Jez), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

the rondelles' teenbeat album had some good moments.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I picked up that "Spring collection" comp by True Love Always, and it's really really pleasant. I mainly picked it up because I heard the Flin Flon drummer also drummed in this band.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I enjoy the Velocity Girl's song on the Teenbeat 50. I need to check out their first EP.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: That Dustdevils album they did as a co-release with Matador. Yowsah.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Aden's the Black Cow.

What's that awful emo band on Teen Beat called?

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Flin Flon, that's who I meant. Man, the twee kids were going on and on about them a few years back. Are they emo, I dunno really.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe they are more new wave retroists.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Jel, you're making my head hurt

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the Cath Carroll album was pretty nice. Search also: Unrest, Versus, Feminine Complex, Gastr del Sol 7", Flin Flon, and most of the yearly samplers. Destroy: Olympic Death Squad, most Eggs, and most of everything else.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Flin Flon is hard to pigeonhole, but "emo" isn't even close.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, sorry about that, it had been 4 years since I had heard them, listening to them now, still not my cup of tea.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Most Flin Flon songs sound like "Primary" by the Cure, with less distinct vocals.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Just out of curiosity, are there any rabid Unrest/Mark Robinson fans in the UK? The only opinions I've heard from UK ilxor's have been rather flat out negative (Mark S, Jel, etc.)... so my impression of Robinson is that he just plain doesn't translate very well to UK audiences (despite having been signed to 4AD in the early 90s).

As for Flin Flon, it's the cheap sounding bass and amazing drumming that sets them apart for me... granted, their early material is a bit dry and unambitious compared to what has followed.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

flin flon wasn't emo... more like factory records revisionists- before it was cool. and they do it better than most, imho. and the drumming is rad!

S- unrest, flin flon, tube bar, BOCS (first 3 7"s), aden's "hey 19", dustdevils, TLA's cover of "september"

D- eggs, sexual milkshake (okay- their packaging is pretty cool), butch willis...

unovis, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Teenbeat as an entity is based on Mark's love of Factory Records, right down the giving everything a catalogue number. Flin Flon is just thing in a long line of things that pay homage to Factory.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

James' "Village Fire" EP, as noted in other threads by ESOJ and myself, pretty much provided half of Unrest's guitar sound, 1990 and on.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(although "Teenbeat" is allegedly the reference to the respective song titles on the first Henry Cow record)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: Rondelles, Flin Flon

Destroy: Aden and True Love Always before I have to suffer through them again at Fort Reno

Remove as an embarrasment to everyone concerned: Jonny Cohen.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

DB - plus Unrest is a Henry Cow album title. And Henry Cow were named after Henry Cowell. And they did a version of a Yardbirds song which really wasn't. And the Yardbirds were named after Charlie Parker, who really liked to eat chicken.

Search: Currituck County. The guy is an amazing fingerpicking guitarist. Plus he plays a B-bender, just like Clarence White!

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Just out of curiosity, are there any rabid Unrest/Mark Robinson fans in the UK?

I can't say I'm rabid about them, but I do love the Unrest that I've kept - Malcolm X Park, Kustom Karnal Blaxploitation, plus the Skinhead Girl & Isabel Bishop singles. On the other hand though, I hated Fuck Pussy Galore, and thought that the 4AD album was just bland. Would be keen to hear some of the other early albums if I ever see them around. I only got into them to start with when Byron Coley mentioned them in the same breath as Slovenly in a Forced Exposure review.

For me, I liked them most when they blended both the Dischord-ish and the pop angles, but they lost me when they got deep into the strum-pop stuff. A hard band for us Brits to pin down, never really ever got written about here until the 4AD deal and then only barely. Teenbeat wasn't at all well distributed, Caroline hardly any better. AFAIK they only ever did a handful of gigs at most here; I saw them at a tiny basement venue in London with Huggy Bear, round about the time that Imperial came out and I'm afraid to say that they were sort of disappointing then.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Caroline hardly any better

Which is pretty funny seeing as they were essentially a division of Virgin -- a vague UK equivalent would be Hut.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

S: certain records here and there
D: aesthetic, name, stereotypical fans

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Which is pretty funny seeing as they were essentially a division of Virgin -- a vague UK equivalent would be Hut

I guess they didn't see us as much of a market for those Uncle Slam albums.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Destroy Butch Willis?!?!?! That's crazy talk. If it were possible, I'm sure it would have happened already. "Drugs'll do it to ya - rock! rock!" I'm also surprised at the Flin Flon hatred - and Grenadine. Kids today! etc.

I think Eggs' Bruiser LP is seriously underrated - plus the great Dave Park was the bassist at the time [he of MXP/KKB era Unrest]. There are some good songs on the second album. They released a lot of fine singles.

Teenbeat also put out records by Crispy Ambulance

TeenBeat only put out a cassette of stuff from Crispy Ambulance dubbed from vinyl - not worth seeking out as everything has since been remastered/reissued by LTM [except a song by post-CA band Ram Ram Kino].

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I too must rise to Butch Willis' defense. I have nothing else to say about anything else on this label.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

not a Grenadine fan then Colin?

three months pass...
Teenbeat's having a sale! Selected CDs for $8!
Check it out: http://www.teenbeatrecords.com/

Seriously, folks, you should pick up at least these three amazing albums:
Flin Flon: Boo-Boo
Unrest: Malcolm X Park
Versus: The Stars Are Insane

And the Cath Carroll CD is quite good too.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

the first Gastr Del Sol LP, the Red Krayola single.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Flin Flon's "Boo-Boo" = YES PLEASE.

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a Red Krayola single on Teenbeat?

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, nice, i might get the flin flon cd. has anyone heard the new Mark Robinson album?

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm, maybe I'm mixing it up with the Gastr Del Sol 20 Songs Less single.

Wasn't there a Red Krayola 7" on some label with the Drag City/Gastr line-up that came out just before the LP on Drag City?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 06:51 (twenty-one years ago)

artdamages wrote: has anyone heard the new Mark Robinson album?

It's on the sale list - I ordered it (along with the new True Love Always) and can report back later. Lois Maffeo sings on the Robinson album, so that sealed the deal for me. (I wondered what she had been up to. She's also part of the duo named the Owl and the Pussycat; they have an album on Kill Rock Stars, released last year.)

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The Stars are Insane is a hot little record. Totally by the numbers, but early enough in my experience of indie to make it seem like the thing that put the numbers where everybody else found them (Seam, etc.)

Random props to Eggs' Teenbeat Exploder 96. A really interesting record with a lot of gems buried in it.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan I think you're thinking of Red Krayola's Fourteen single on Drag City, which came out before the "comeback" LP. Great single. I'd bet it'll be on the singles comp. that DC is putting out shortly.

That "20 Songs Less" single might be the best Gastr release, maybe.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah! Eggs' "A Pit with Spikes" deserves some kind of award, having a bizarre faux Bee Gees funk breakdown section and totally making it work. (The "Ruined By Robinson" mix of that track on the Lobster compilation is excellent as well).

And whenever I feel tired (which is always), the song "Why Am I So Tired All The Time?" sometimes pops into my head. (Also, "I'm So Tired" by the Beatles.)

Is there a verdict on the Fontaine Toups album? I downloaded the two MP3s on her site (http://www.thefontainetoups.com/) - didn't really grab me. I would love another Containe release...one that was as good as I Want It All.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Pacific Ocean but I lost the CD they gave me (and I think they're done as a group now).

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, that's what I'm thinking of.

Is Boo-Boo the first Flin Flon album? With all the Canadian town song names? Because that's the one to get.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

A-OK is the first one. See, they're in alphabetical order by year...A-OK, Boo-Boo (and the Black Bear EP), Chicoutimi...

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

how much?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

pps. it's on sub-pop

some personal faves b/c I don't think they've been mentioned yet:

Unrest's "Bavarian Mods"

Johnny Cohen's awesome "I'm Not An Anorexic"

(sample lyrics: "I'm not an anorexic I'm not an anorexic not me
when I get down to 70 I'll be a beauty queen")

Cobalt's "Saturday" from Teenbeat 100

and the Sexual Milkshake single for "Space Gnome"

Mark's new band with Evelyn, Cotton Candy, is kind of fun: http://www.myspace.com/cottoncandyteenbeat

I get the sense the label's just turned into a hobby, though. There's probably been less than 10 new releases in the last five years.

BTW, supposedly Dustdevils' Struggling Electric & Chemical is getting reissued on 180 vinyl. I'm happy with my CD, but I guess some people might be interested. Apparently it may get a real sleeve this time, which might tempt me to buy a copy. Liner notes would be nice too. I don't think Teenbeat is doing it.

Search also the Maybe It's Reno song "Sky's On Fire" on some compilation. Got to keep an eye on Teenbeat comps, as they often slip interesting stuff onto them.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 16:24 (sixteen years ago)

Love that Dustdevils record. Wasn't a lot of Teenbeat stuff I dug at the time, though, other than Unrest who were and are one of my favorite bands of the era (late 80s/early 90s). S: EVERYTHING.

Gave Versus, Grenadine, Eggs, and a few others a shot, but they never did much for me. Sexual Milkshake and Blast Off Country Style singles were funny, but kinda useless. Tube Bar = classic.

That's not just me saying that, that's the Pentagon. (contenderizer), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 16:34 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, random Dustdevils/Teenbeat thing: the only CD appearance of a track of theirs called "Seen Heat" from a 7" is on a Teenbeat compilation called Wakefield / Volume 3 / Superstars On Forty-Five (teenbeat 161/teenbeat 181). It sounds really amazing on CD and makes me wish they'd put the whole "Is Big Leggy" out digitally.
