WINDOWLICKER: bitch-ass luke vibert ripoff or THE GREATEST SIX MINUTES IN THE HISTORY OF RECORDED SOUND?

i'm leaning towards the latter.

ethan, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So am I.

Norman Phay, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Moi aussi. Did anyone see him DJ in the Barbican greenhouse the other night? What like?

Jeff, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't think anyone saw him. The gig was on headphones, given out at the door, and everyone wandered.

Re: Windowlicker - Still as seductive and deadly as the day I first heard it, 3 years ago!

K-reg, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I'm going to play it right now.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm ashamed to say it's the last record I bought on all possible formats, something I hadn't done since the days of Iron Maiden.

K-reg, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I actually prefer the demo version included on one of the CD singles, but then I like my Aphex small and simple rather than big and banging.

Andrew L, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, as soon as I read the title of this thread, I *had* to hear it, so make of that what you will. I think I like "Girl/Boy Song" even more, though.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan, what has the Indie-Punk Whiteboy Ass-Kisser himself created that is so undeniably fantastically great that it justifies you're classification of the greatest six minutes in the history of recorded sound as a Vibert rip-off?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(yes, I meant what I said- you are a classification, dammit!)

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's not his best track - but it's still excellent. The only qualm is that sections of it sound very similar to come to daddy.

dog latin, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All this and no mention of the fucked-up-as-hell video, I'm most distresssed.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So distressed that I added an extra 's' even.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

anyone notice the hidden image in the video ('the' - there's probably more than one) ? Pause the screen when they first show him with the bottle of champagne ..

(pronounced 'sham-panya,' of course, like The Continental)

Dare, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Talking of The Aphex Twin, look at this. Sick fuck.

Johnathan, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Talking of The Aphex Twin, look at this. Sick fuck.

Hmmm... very Brothers Quay-ish.

Brian MacDonald, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

grr i can only use quicktime 3, what is it?

ethan, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The video is cool, it's a naked guy in a wheelchair with a REALLY BIG HEAD "singing", shot in night-vision.

Dr.Acula, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Windowlicker = pure rock. Especially that bit where it goes all warm and fuzzy at the end. I don't know about the greatest six minutes in the history of recorded sound, but I'm fairly happy to declare it millions of times better than anything Luke Vibert has ever done.

And it sounds even more seductive and deadly now than the first time I heard it, because the first few times I heard it on the radio I'm fairly sure it was at the wrong speed. (I borrowed the pre-release promo from somewhere and played it at that speed myself; then the cd came out and I realised.)

Rebecca, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"come to daddy" remains one of the best videos ever made (god-or-the-lack-thereof bless you chris cunningham).

chameleon, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

aphex has never moved me. ethan's hyperbole-classic or dud? major dud.

keith, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

keith, you're easily the most annoying cunt who's ever walked the earth.

ethan, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

luke vibert? luke vibert? you're joking Ethan, right?

gareth, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

REVIVE!
Why? Cause We Like You!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 6 November 2004 05:34 (twenty years ago)

j'aime faire des croquettes au chien.

:| (....), Saturday, 6 November 2004 05:51 (twenty years ago)

You love carnival dog croquettes?
Dude, that's disgusting.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 6 November 2004 05:52 (twenty years ago)

I like this song. I'm no Aphex expert, but it's one of my favorites of his. Maybe it's just the video, but there's something all laid-back and G-funk about it that I like.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 6 November 2004 05:54 (twenty years ago)

It's no "Girl/Boy Song" for sure. I don't dislike anything by Aphex but this is really far from being a favourite. I'm not as into the choice of synth and bass sounds as on his other stuff; it's too 80s or something I think. Mind you, I'm really weird in that I think Drukqs and 26 Mixes are totally great. Also, I think I would rate a lot of Vibert's YosepH higher than this, not that they're all that similar.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 6 November 2004 07:57 (twenty years ago)

"Mind you, I'm really weird in that I think Drukqs and 26 Mixes are totally great."

no, you're not weird, 26 mixes has some of RDJ's best work on it, IMHO!

while i wouldn't place it among his greater works, windowlicker is a cool, fun, single. video's funny too.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 6 November 2004 08:22 (twenty years ago)

girl/boy song is his greatest moment.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 6 November 2004 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Drukqs is totally great.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 6 November 2004 18:52 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
the video is great, funny, all of that...the song's great, too, except that fuzzy ending. sometimes aphex twin kills me, and not in a good way, but other times, like with Avril song, i fucking fall in love.
i prefer LUKE to all things!
and that 26 mixes fucking rocked.

why is it so god-damned fucking hard to find vibert live footage? it's like no one records the stuff.

braindon, Sunday, 16 April 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

This is a great thread, BTW.

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 16 April 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

i dont really get this run jeremy edit thing, its been played out a few times recently, and, well, you know

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 16 April 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

There's not much to get, it's just Aphex Twin with stabilisers. I quite like it, I can see why others might not.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Sunday, 16 April 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 16 April 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh, I have to go check this out...

morris pavilion (samjeff), Sunday, 16 April 2006 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

i get the idea, i just dont think it works that well

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 16 April 2006 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

that bit near the end of the freeform five misch masch mix, with 'windowlicker' all crossed up with flugel's 'geht's noch?', is pretty rad.

lil' merzbow wow (haitch), Monday, 17 April 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

i play the run jeremy edit out to death. it most certainly does work that well.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 17 April 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

but other times, like with Avril song, i fucking fall in love.

The who in the what now?

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 17 April 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

it's complicated sorry

RJG (RJG), Monday, 17 April 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

This song sounds so weirdly 2006!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 17 April 2006 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

I have a dinky mix where she ends her set with the run jeremy track .. it's rad :D

fandango (fandango), Monday, 17 April 2006 22:10 (nineteen years ago)

song is still tight - i like drukqs too

-++-++-, Monday, 17 April 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

& selected ambient works 1

-++-++-, Monday, 17 April 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

beatmakers need to get up on that drum sound 4 real

-++-+-, Monday, 17 April 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

I like the second song on the windowlicker ep better than "windowlicker" itself.

forksclovetofu, Friday, 11 May 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

Actually I heard this for the first time about...8 months ago and was right chuffed. I used to be an Aphex fan but this was after I quite paying attention...it struck me how it seemed to have a bit of a Radiohead feel...I really liked it. But I decided it was hard to stay focused on Aphex anymore aside from that song...the technology just isn't new anymore. Call me an early 90's traitor, okay, whatever.

Bimble, Saturday, 12 May 2007 11:43 (eighteen years ago)

you probably say "right chuffed"

RJG, Saturday, 12 May 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

and "radiohead feel"

RJG, Saturday, 12 May 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

Hey there! How are you, RJG?

Bimble, Saturday, 12 May 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

Dull, dull dull. Extremely lame wallpaper funk, really, with some nosepicking nerdy quirks overlaid. A dismal confirmation of the fact he'd lost it completely trying to second guess and outsmart his audience - that's not what music is about. SO dissapointing, I really loved this guy once.

moley, Saturday, 12 May 2007 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

So recommend some more funk, Moley, you have no idea how in the mood I am for funk and disco. It's not even funny.

Bimble, Saturday, 12 May 2007 12:14 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

best song ever made.

chaki, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

I am going to have to take another listen of this if I still have it because I'm pretty sure I found it utterly utterly lame cf. Sterling Clover's point above

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

I may just have a knee-jerk reaction to everything post CTD from mr. james though e.g. when he decided to become a total wanker a la moby and only do shit that's fit for background noise in bad movies

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

I kinda feel the same way but I do enjoy Windowlicker a lot. Not a patch on his best though.

everything, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

I remember when I got it I had to spin in about fifteen times before I started to enjoy it and by that point I was also pretty well lit up on bourbon

TMF was also criticised for playing the video to Windowlicker, a track by dance producer Aphex Twin, which contained repeated swearing and also attracted complaints.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

Fucking brilliant song, it terrifies me, I only listen to it in daylight. Oh and that video is TAME comparitively. TMF needs to grow a pair.

VeronaInTheClub, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

Whether I think people should get wound up about swearing, the video is no way "tame" in that respect.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

"luke vibert"

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

you beef with luke vibert, peaches fan?

and what, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

peaches is just a david holmes ripoff, ethan, everybody knows that

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 17:07 (seventeen years ago)

i think you'd really like this, if you haven't heard it -

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

(two posts ago was a joke, btw!)

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

lot of wagon christ/plug shit uses the same kind of layered vocal samples like windowlicker

and what, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

xp yeah i copped that

you heard "the tuss" - dope

and what, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

no, i haven't! i don't have much patience for the whole squarepusher squiggle-tech thing though tbh. i've been told that with certain drugs it all makes sense but i'm scared of any drug that would make hrvatski or dj shitmat or hellfish & producer make sense.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

nah man the tuss is just twitchy acid house over 808s

and what, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 17:23 (seventeen years ago)

def some cutup shit but its pretty straightforward back-to-89 sounding

and what, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

the tuss is really nice stuff. it's on my list of albums my gf won't get annoyed by, and she hates super glitchy/noisy stuff.

rockapads, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

i think i hinted at this on some other tuss thread, but 'shiz ko e' on the tuss album is sorta like a mini 'windowlicker'. not nearly as great, but still awesome

6335, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 20:42 (seventeen years ago)

Luke Vibert's rather untouchable, as Richard D. James is in their own right. They're both well established not to mention that both of their respected discographies branch off in such wild and creative directions that each are wonderful in their own regard. Aphex Twin surely has that signature sound on his tracks which while his material progresses from analog/digital/sample/analog/or-whereeverhegoes, Luke Vibert seems to create more in phases. The Volumes of Amen Andrews and Further Nuggets sound like two entirely different artists, they're both damn good though.

Who's better? Maybe Aphex Twin, for his releases that reach timeless perfection, but he owes a lot to Vibert and has yet to cut some dnb like Amen Renegade.

jbill, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 22:10 (seventeen years ago)

what the fuck

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

i've been told that with certain drugs it all makes sense

The more wacked-out stuff is best appreciated sober TBH, it can be a bit much on drugs.

chap, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

anyway I still maintain that the beats on this track are seriously weak

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

whatevs I didn't even know he'd made another nuggets comp so win-win for me

El Tomboto, Thursday, 5 June 2008 03:21 (seventeen years ago)

no one's mentioned it, but the afx mix of vibert's 'sci-fi staircase' is pretty fantastic too - the track he entered in the vibert remix contest under the name tahnaiya russell
