it isn't too bad. I did my laundry today in a building without a door in shorts, flip-flops and a t-shirt. I am going to see a Jandek documentary tomorrow night at sxsw. I don't know much, but I know that Innovator makes sense when the weather is bad, you listen to it in a car because you have to drive everywhere and you are locked in doors all winter, and the Lee Scratch Perry Arkology boxset makes a lot more sense when you listen to it on headphones while walking by a beautiful river in the middle of the city on a warm day and there are pretty girls jogging past you in the middle of march.

Also, Spirit Of Eden, Calling Out Of Context, and World Of Echo are the three best albums ever made.

"a beautiful river in the middle of the city"

Have you noticed those signs warning you not to eat any fish you might catch out of that river?

boldbury, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Mikey is now a Texas boy! Yeehaw.

x-post Yeah he said he was moving a couple of weeks back.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

it makes sense anyway. nice one! v. poetic, that whole scenery almost came to life for me. and it made me want to give my scratch box a new listen when summer comes around.

You have to remember that I think of the Detroit River when I think of urban waterfronts. The waterfront in austin doesnt even have railroad yards, burned out car frames, and factories that have been abandoned for 30 years. It is fucked up, you can like walk around out here and there are like trees and nature and stuff. And there is somebody on the waterfront besides this dude:

Taylor left Detroit? It really is finished.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

"And there is somebody on the waterfront besides this dude:"

Have you found Stevie Ray yet? He's out there on the waterfront somewhere.

And if you haven't eated at Chuy's yet, get by there soon!

boldbury, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

You can't understand Austin Techno until you've spent weekends prowling the U of T campus in search of sorority cooze, you've been accosted by security at 3 am for passing out on the steps of the capitol, you've ascended the Texas Tower with a rifle in your hand, and you've gazed at Madonna's pap smear.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

strange:
I, too, found Innovator best on car stereo and Arkology best on headphones walking around. But I'll add "Early Fall 77-79" is best subway listening on the way to a night out.

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Welcome to Austin!

You can't understand Austin Techno

I went to the local dance music specialist store this weekend. Oh boy, they do things a little differently out here. SE Michigan wins with no contest as far as that is concerned. And yeah, I stand by my comments on the derrick may thread 100%.

The Rebukes of Hazard (mjt), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

All right you made it! Yea some of the music as far as techno goes is severely lacking but as far as blues goes you are in the heart of it.

listened to innovator all the way across the country a couple years ago in our chevy truck. sounded great.

three years pass...

I'm visiting here this weekend. Any suggestions for music stores? What's the best place for electronic music? Vinyl?

Thanks!

Waterloo, 6th and Lamar.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

End of an Ear, down on South First.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

Those are just general record store recommendations - I don't buy vinyl or electronic music (although both will surely have some of each.)

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

For your vinyl/electronic music needs:

For vinyl generally (not necessarily electronic), also check Friends Of Sound which is at 1704 s congress, but actually accessible from an alleyway behind congress. I've found some great deals there, as well as rare stuff (that was more of a fair deal).

city worker, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

backspin seconded.

I forgot about this post, it has been a long time.

I am finally starting to feel settled after years and years.

Cool article. Got to love the image of mid 70s Doobie Brothers rolling out some big wing Caddy.

I called it “Public Domain Incorporated, My Home for Runaway Fathers,” because every wayward musician who came through town would end up staying there. Jimmy Buffett used to come by. The Doobie Brothers showed up in Cadillacs one night

earlnash, Thursday, 24 October 2019 01:30 (six years ago)

Cool. Saw some pictures from one of those events in the Ken Burns doc and the accompanying book, maybe even that same ones.

Forgot about Alvin Crow. Used to go see him all the time.
