To me, it's cheapest possible way to get the "wow" factor from the viewer. Although "The Scientist" does have a surprise ending, which is sort of cool.

There's a new Alicia Keys vid that also runs backwards -- and it's also shit.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I *think* it's Alicia Keys, if memory serves ...

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess the daddy must be The Pharcyde.

I think I remember seeing a Bailterspace video that runs backwards, can anyone confirm this?

mzui, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ian Brown 'FEAR'

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Spike Jonze did that one (Pharcyde), if I remember correctly. There's also that Beyonce clip.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Bailter Space video was "Splat" wasn't it? It was in front of a red brick wall on the street or something...?

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a mirwais video that runs backwards - it's him sitting in front of a mirror putting on make up. except it's backwards, so it looks like he's peeling the make-up off his face. i think. it's so confusing. actually it messed my head up a bit, trying to figure it out. i'm still not sure i understand how it works.

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yea! I remember because it does the same bike riding trick that the Pharcyde one does (well, as far as it has someone riding a bike in it)
and it's also set in New York.

Wasn't there also an early Smashing Pumpkins vid that was backwards Rhinoceros maybe?

mzui, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

that's 'Naive Song'

Massive Attack's 'Special Cases' sort of goes backwards when it reaches the middle (done quite cleverly really)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't believe i still haven't watched my Spike Jonze DVD so i can see how the 'Drop' video was filmed (there is some clever interplay of forward/backward action, at various points the guys are doing stuff backwards which is filmed and THEN reversed so it looks all weird and disjointed iirc)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

With the benefit of hindsight, 'Return to Innocence' is massively underrated.

Sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean I can still sing it and I haven't heard it in the last decade. Not a lot of songs I can say that about.

Sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I *think* it's Alicia Keys, if memory serves ...
I haven't seen said video, but you might mean Beyonce's "Me, Myself & I", which has backwards bits.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

'drop' is awesome.
also 'sugar water' by cibo matto, which goes backwards and forwards at the same time. yikes!

zappi (joni), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot fathom how that Cibo Matto one works, but it is brilliant. I think it's a Michael Gondry clip.

Hayden Nicholls (Pop the Weasel), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw him on tv once describing it as a video palindrome!

zappi (joni), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

REM's "Imitation of Life" video sort of does this, looping a shot back and forth and zooming in on details.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Nick, you're right, it was Beyonce. I mixed up my massively overrated multi-Grammy winning American female R&B artists.

Danny Wilson - The Second Summer of Love

Man, that whole band was backwards.

39 Steps + 40 Winks (39 Steps + 40 Winks), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Which is the video of that Asian man eating all sorts of things -- lighbulbs, plates, stuff like that -- and played backwards?

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The band was God Lives Underwater, but I don't remember the name of the single.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

..and it was pretty disgusting.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

that was by Roman Coppola!

Radiohead's 'Go To Sleep' features CGI buildings collapsing but then re-assembling backwards

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

oh wait i am thinking of a different video re the Coppola one (it's not backwards and he only eats food)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Fremme Neppa Venette.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"The band was God Lives Underwater, but I don't remember the name of the single."

In Your Mouth

boldbury, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic for the Pharcyde video. I have the Jonze dvd at home and, if I remember correctly, it was all one long take too. The commentary has the band members talking about how they tried to memorize the lyrics backwards, to the point of having a linguist write it out.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Beta Band had one for the last album for "Squares."

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"From Your Mouth." It's a good one.

The Pharcyde one's probably the best, though I love the look of the Beyoncé video.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Nine Inch Nails had the one with the dog decomposing backwards, for "Hurt" if think.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 18 March 2004 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm shocked that nobody's mentioned "If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time" by R. Kelly.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 18 March 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

goodshirt "blowing dirt"

classic because the singer dude learned how to sing the entire song backwards, so in the video it appears like he's singing it normally. extremely impressive effort.
