for niggas up in they moms crib / listening to this unadulterated nas shit / wishing it was them instead of me on this track / on this beach with palm trees. the taste of the new nas on the 10th anniv illmatic disc. but sounding like an it was written outtake, like he was flipping through that book of rhymes alchemist laughed at, realizing that he should not use beats that sound like they were made after 1996, just really simple old fashioned beats with spooky noises and forget about a chorus, because that's what we want. i hope the double album gets padded with a dozen of these.

three weeks pass...
it's very good. are these all new lyrics? if so, it seems he's *really* back on form.

and what exactly is on the anniversary disc? this, "on the real", and a few remixes? that it?

m., Saturday, 10 April 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Its got 2 new songs, a couple wack remixes, and the original albm.

djdee2005, Saturday, 10 April 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The remastered sound is in improvement, don't you think?

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 10 April 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't compared them side-by-side yet, but I was happy w/ the originals.

djdee2005, Saturday, 10 April 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i dont think i wanna fuck with it, really.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 10 April 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Me neither. If labels want to fuck around with classic records, get to remastering The Low End Theory and putting the swears back in. Or doing a reissue of Follow the Leader that doesn't sound like it's played on a $15 Walgreens boom box with the "BASS/TREBLE" slider all the way to the treble side and broken off, plus one of the speakers is broken.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Saturday, 10 April 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i just get sick of labels thinking that the compression or whatever of "classic" rap albums is a flaw that needs correcting. it was the technology of the time, people!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 10 April 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone stole my copy so I am debating buying the DELUXE version.

get to remastering The Low End Theory and putting the swears back in.

Whats the story behind this, anyone know?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 10 April 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

ha Nate I just got that Follow the Leader CD

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 10 April 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

if you compare anything to the "Follow the Leader" 12", though, the point of comparison is gonna come up short, because the "Follow the Leader" 12" is God on stilts

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 10 April 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea. All I know is that every version of the Quest record I've ever had has almost all the curses excised (except for the stray Busta-growled "motherfucker" at the end of "Scenario").

The compression is one thing but if a rap record is meant to have bass but does not actually wind up WITH bass then boo to that. (I haven't heard Follow the Leader on LP so I don't know if it's just a bad transfer or what.)

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Saturday, 10 April 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

my ancient follow the leader cassette is probably not the format to judge by

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 10 April 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Shameful admission: My 20th Century Master's Eric B and Rakim CD sounds good.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 10 April 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there much difference between the Follow The Leader 12" and the lp version? Not in terms of sound quality difference, but new additions.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Sunday, 11 April 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

that 20th Century Masters CD is so awesome

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Sunday, 11 April 2004 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The remastering job on Illmatic is a major improvement to my untrained/nonaudiophile ears. The original sounds muddy and the beat lacks any kind of kick.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 11 April 2004 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

beats

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 11 April 2004 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I was happy with the original too, but the new one just jumps out you.

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 11 April 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

b-b-but i dont want it to jump out at me!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 11 April 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

i popped the illmatic reissue remix CD in my car for the first time since I was probably 15, and i totally forgot about how he fucked with the second verse of "the world is yours", and how incredible the new verse is.

also should specify it was the first time i'd listened to the remix CD since i was 15...wasnt driving @ 15

also for others who own this, is your "one love" remix censored too for some reason?

Thanks, Casey Westcott Fleet Foxes (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 05:55 (sixteen years ago)
