For anyone – like this reviewer – who’s far out of range of London’s tower-block pirate transmitters, DJ Wrongspeed’s Pirate Flava is an indispensable document of the UK’s unlicensed airwaves. Originally a weekly, 15-minute radio show on London’s Resonance 104.4 FM, DJ Wrongspeed’s carefully selected “best-of” broadcast was shut down after a mere 10 months in February, 2003 upon a formal complaint from the Radio Authority. Listening to this hour-long mix it’s hard to tell what the censors found so offensive – the Black Power tirades against whites? The homophobic invective? But it’s those incidental bits, sequenced between grime freestyles, blistering dancehall, and endless in-studio chatter, that give Pirate Flava its documentary edge. Far from Clear Channel’s ideology-free vacuum, pirate radio exists in the messy, contentious space of the city, and every blast of static on this mix underscores that point. The anonymously-issued CD-R includes the argument-defining “Megamix,” the ‘ardkore revival “Old Skool,” the bouncing, Garage-centric “UK Shed Mix,” and “Talk’n’Ads.” A chaotic collage of just that, “Talk’n’Ads” is a brilliant piece of radio art, a sonic urban sampling on par with Walker Evans' classic signage photographs.
