It arrived today. It is wonderful, basically.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 1 May 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I want to hear that Erection Section thing so badly.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 1 May 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

It's brilliant. Half mixtape, half radio dérive. Here's what I wrote about it for my Critical Beats column in the Wire:

For anyone – like this reviewer – who’s far out of range of London’s tower-block pirate transmitters, DJ Wrongspeed’s Pirate Flava is an indispensable document of the UK’s unlicensed airwaves. Originally a weekly, 15-minute radio show on London’s Resonance 104.4 FM, DJ Wrongspeed’s carefully selected “best-of” broadcast was shut down after a mere 10 months in February, 2003 upon a formal complaint from the Radio Authority. Listening to this hour-long mix it’s hard to tell what the censors found so offensive – the Black Power tirades against whites? The homophobic invective? But it’s those incidental bits, sequenced between grime freestyles, blistering dancehall, and endless in-studio chatter, that give Pirate Flava its documentary edge. Far from Clear Channel’s ideology-free vacuum, pirate radio exists in the messy, contentious space of the city, and every blast of static on this mix underscores that point. The anonymously-issued CD-R includes the argument-defining “Megamix,” the ‘ardkore revival “Old Skool,” the bouncing, Garage-centric “UK Shed Mix,” and “Talk’n’Ads.” A chaotic collage of just that, “Talk’n’Ads” is a brilliant piece of radio art, a sonic urban sampling on par with Walker Evans' classic signage photographs.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 1 May 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i would feel guilty downloading this off slsk. a little.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 1 May 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Would you now?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 2 May 2004 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

This is really fantastic.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

bjkghlugluiglg

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you downloaded it, Jess?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i cant find it.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

What's your favorite part, Alex?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The "Talk'n'Ads" is just incredible, but it's all great. I don't think there is a less than great tune on all four tracks.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Which is occassionally a bad thing since it makes me want the song to play out a little more not END suddenly hahaha.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It really is hard to imagine what censors found so objectionable. Most of this stuff is pretty tame for the States. Can you explain, @d@m?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Jess, I would sort you out but I am having some problems...you know. In time, everything will be as it was.

X-post I don't think it was a censorship issue, Alex. One second...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Jess, I'll see what I can do.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

More of a regulatory issue in that it "celebrates" illegal pirate radio.

Read Marcello here.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no, reading that I guess it was somewhat of a censorship thing.

*shrugs*

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

So you can't buy it anymore?

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes! Right from the resonance site!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha apparently it's cheaper now. Only 10 pounds.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Although S&H is a brutal 5 POUNDS!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

ten months pass...
It's still good.
