R&B in 2004

during the last few months i've downloaded lotsa fresh tunes off of sample.b6.to, and in the process had the chance to taste the middle-ground stuff: artists who aim for Billboard Hot 100 but come up short-handed and end up neither here not there (Akon, Melea, Trademarc, Kyrsten, J-Soul, Keisha White, Rasheeda, Lil Fizz, Rasqual, Joey Ashby, Miami Scott... who the hell ARE these people?!?)...

anyway, the point is - there's lot of r&b that passes underneath the radar. some of it is good, some of it is bad. and then there's chartbustin' r&b - some of it is good, some of it is bad too. let's talk about it all! here are some tunes i've been feeling lately:

Janet Jackson - I Want You
the stuff of my dreams. only 10 more days til "Damita Jo", can't wait!!!

Nina Sky feat. Jabba - Move Your Body
on top of the Coolie Dance riddim - i've only heard Sean Paul's version, which i didn't like... but this is instantly pleasing, i would happily dance to it in a club!

Joe feat. G-Unit - Ride Wit U
kinda sounds exactly as you would expect... but that ain't a bad thang.

En Vogue - Ooh Boy
not earth-shattering in any way - more like "The Riddle" rather than "Hold On" or "My Lovin'", but that's good enough for me... slinky, funky, lovin' it!

Blaque Ivory - I'm Good
been recently wondering what's up with Rodney Jerkins... and then he comes back with two tunes! Tyra Banks' "Shake Your Body" has left me unimpressed, but this i like - nice rattlin' percussion.

Lloyd - Hey Young Girl
neat singing and all, but the beat's a bit lazy... am currently thinking that the mashup of Lloyd's vox with the instrumental of Bravehearts' "Situations" would be the best thing ever.

okay i'll throw out one i'm really enjoying...

Allen Anthony - Alright
detroit techno hits the charts! the backing track could easily be carl craig from five years ago and his vocals aren't too bad either. this probably will climb the Hot 100 because it's got damon dash and def jam behind it.

it's techno... it's R&B... but it's not Vikter Duplaix?!? wow.

( btw i was bored by Duplaix's "DJ Kicks" but love his "Manhood"... should i search out for antything else from him?)

Mind Taker, Friday, 19 March 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not perfect, but it's pretty good as that sort of thing goes

Who does the song about how he feels like he's been kicked out of heaven? That, Usher's "Burn" and Ruben's "Sorry 2004" are making me hungry for more "girl, I done WRONG" tracks.

jagged edge

other great tracks from the Jagged Edge album:
Car Show (feat. Big Boi)
Girls Gone Wild (feat. Major Damage)

Mind Taker, Friday, 19 March 2004 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I just looked at their singles' chart placing on allmusic and I don't think I recognized the names of any of their other hits! This one's resonating though.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 19 March 2004 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony, don't tell me you don't know "Where The Party At"!! that one's a stone cold classic.

Mind Taker, Friday, 19 March 2004 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I might recognize it but I think I never really paid attention to them before, always filed them away as generic R&B. But I've learned my lesson.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 19 March 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Paula Campbell's "Take You Home" has been a big big hit here in Baltimore the last couple months, but I don't think it's been heard at all elsewhere. I've started a thread on it and tried to hype it up a bit, but I have no idea if it's out there at all in mp3 form. but it's really fantastic, pretty much a shoe-in for my top 3 singles of the year.

Here's a weird thought: I wonder if @d@m likes Baby Jaymes?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 19 March 2004 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 14 June 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

six months pass...
I have the Baby Jaymes record but still haven't really listened to it!

Let us mull over the year in R&B.

I have just got round to hearing Ashanti, Ciara, and Teedra Moses' albums. They are good.

Also I like that Marques Houston song w/Ying Yang.
