what's with that song that's like all mellow at the begining and then it starts rocking out halfway through and the guy is talking about this angel who was like COME SAIL AWAY WITH ME! and then it rocks for a while and goes back to being synthy? it's weird, because it's kinda bad, but it's kinda good too.

That's STYX. Fucking Christ. I guess it's OK, when compared to stuff like "Too Much *clap clap* Time On My Hands" and "Lady". And "Babe". Cartman's version, of course, is beyond reproach. (He does a slammin' "O Holy Night", too.)

Sex and drugs! Sex and drugs!

David Raposa, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dude, that's styx? they did domo arigato mister roboto too, what a great fucking band! why doesn't everyone love them?

ethan, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You ever read the liner notes to _Kilroy Was Here_? That'll kill your love right there. I do like the idea that the eventual trend in hip- hop will be love of Styx and Kansas, though.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

am i the indicator for eventual trends in hiphop?

ethan, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And here I thought that this thread was about Neil Young's "Sail Away" (on Rust Never Sleeps, nicely sandwiched in between "Pocahantas" and "Powderfinger.") I really do expect too much from certain ILMers, I do.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As hip-hop expands its influence, the influences on it will expand.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And here I thought this was about Randy Newman's "Sail Away". You know, the greatest song ever with that title?

dleone, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And here I was thinking you were talking about David Gray's "Sail Away". White Ladder = spawn of Satan or something.

Jeff, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And here *I* was thinking this thread was about the anthemic majesty that is "Orinoco Flow" by Enya with it's unforgettable refrain...

Andrew Williams, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i KNEW it was abt styx: styx = bettah than zappa qed

"I do like the idea that the eventual trend in hip- hop will be love of Styx and Kansas, though."

i think master p, et al have pretty much borne this out.

one of my favorite songs of the 90s was influenced by enya. that bugs me out.

jess, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And here I was thinking you were talking about Nick Cave's 'Sail Away', but I guess you're probably not.
There are certainly a lot of songs called 'Sail Away', aren't there?

DavidM, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As long as we're not talking about Christopher Cross' "Sailing" (which, now that I have it playing in my head, is a pretty tune).

David Raposa, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just googled those notes. They rock! It sounds like they finally completed The Who's "Lifehouse" project. I head a great interview with styx once, where they explained that music quality aside, they soundtracked people's lives and therefore you can't hate on them. I mean... this era of music is dead history like hair metal to most of my generation. Which, somehow, feels mildly sad.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The fact that "Come Sail Away" is dead history is a blessing.

Sean, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Sail Away" is wonderful! This is the sort of thing I would have said I liked "ironically" at one time but, sod it, it's great! Used well in "Freaks and Geeks," too. Oh, and "Virgin Suicides."

FWIW, it's called "Come Sail Away," so Randy Newman and all of those other bores are safe from its majesty. ;)

scott p., Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just googled those notes. They rock!

Lord, Sterling. Google the photos next and then you'll really cry.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tommy Shaw is dead sexy.

David Raposa, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I mentally added a comma into that last post, wondered when Shaw died, and then wondered about yer feelings for Ned. It's all that's keeping me from vomiting, thinking about all of this Styx, a band that's missing the letter "n" second position from the end.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

enya?

rjwgº, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one month passes...
I remember "Miss America" being pretty rocking.

Sterling's generation, being 2 years younger than mine, missed out on so much great music from the hair metal era.

sundar subramanian, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Too Much *clap* *clap* Time on My Hands" is fantastic.

Kris, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I remember hearing an interview with Neil Schon once - He said that "Mr. Roboto" was total crap & Styx Sucked (Sux). The fuckin' guy from Journey saying that he didn't think Styx was good... Really going out on a limb there "Who's Cryin' Now".

Anyway, Styx has some kind of nostalgic appeal, yet they're total crap. Unlike Journey, who have no appeal and are total crap.

And Dennis DeYoung's version of "Fire" (Yes, Jimi Hendrix's "Fire") is about the funniest thing ever. I highly recommend that you seek it out. Seriously.

Dave225, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

uh oh, now you've done it....

Jeff, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wha' happen?

Dave225, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

three months pass...
I woke up to "Suite Madame Blue" on the radio last night, the part where the mellow fingerpicking-and-organ gives way to the double- tracked "America" chorus and that anthemic "You're not a child anymore" bit. It was awesome. I'm going to keep an eye out for Equinox.
