ADMIN: HTML tags and you...why some of your posts may be buggered up right now

There have been a few complaints on various threads and on some of the various ILX-related lists about stranger behaviour lately when you try to submit a post that contains angle brackets.

Basically, there have been a number of problems lately with people embedding things into threads that cause problem for a number of readers, or serve to just break the threads altogether using HTML majick. Because this was an ongoing problem, Andrew finally decided to strip the number of allowable HTML commands back to the basics:

<P> <BR> <A> <IMG> <B> <U> <I> <STRIKE> <BLOCKQUOTE>

Unfortunately, this means that the board will now strip out anything between angled brackets that isn't an allowed tag, which will cause problems if you're trying to use < or > to indicate less than or greater than in a mathematical formulation, or if you're writing a "joke" tag (ie. </DAN PERRY>).

Consequently, if you want to use < or > in a post for whatever reason, you will need to enter it using the same special codes HTML writers have to when displaying the characters. Yeah, it's annoying as hell, but you're actually learning a valuable skill! (You gotta look at the bright side of it, yes yes.)

Any questions, please direct them here!

I definitely removed all the unnecessary spaces.

Ken L (Ken L), Saturday, 20 November 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

What are you trying to do?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Saturday, 20 November 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

sean, is there any scope for adding these tags, please:

emphasis em tag
strong strong tag

as blogger uses these tags instead of italic and bold.

some bloggers, like to copy 'n' paste interesting music news straight onto ILM - without the need to change tags.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 November 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

emphasis and strong tags are super lame. no one should be using them in these modern times

JaXoN (JasonD), Saturday, 20 November 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Only Blogger the world's most popular web publishing tool.

The only point i am making it's a hassle to have to change tags to republish on ILM.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 November 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Sean, just trying to post an image. Followed Ned's instructions to alex on the killing joke thread but didn't work. So to show you with with square brackets what I type:

[IMG SRC="http://www.belten.freeserve.co.uk/pics/coop.jpg"]

Now with angle brackets below:

Now what do we see?

Ken L (Ken L), Saturday, 20 November 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

tip, just place an i in front of the http

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 November 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, what the fuck is with the strong tag? what the hell is wrong with b? fuck that shit. I don't want to have to type an extra four letters. I have things to do

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 21 November 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

OK thanks for tip. DJM. Let me try it.

Ken L (Ken L), Sunday, 21 November 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken L (Ken L), Sunday, 21 November 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

[IMG SRC="http://www.belten.freeserve.co.uk/pics/coop.jpg"]

Does it work?

Ken L (Ken L), Sunday, 21 November 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 21 November 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I think I got it, thanks, DJM. Maybe some moderator wants to delete the pictures now, I dunno.
