Heads up Edinburgh & Beyond: The return of Moniak

[OK - this reads a bit like a press release but it is all true, honest and in no way connected to the band in question. They are just fucking amazing and once you hear them, you will thank me for pointing them out to you.]

Right, here's a tip for y'all - Moniak. They were about in Edinburgh about 4/5 years ago and they were rock as fuck. Huge sabbath riffs, really tight, quite complex but with hooks all over the place. We thought big things were afoot. Then, nothing.

They have been away practicing. For 4 years. And they were tight as tight can be to begin with. They now have an extra guitarist. And have gone a bit prog, but still in a syncopated rock fashion. I am soooo excited about this band.

Sound familar by there name. Weren't they around for ages (like from the Cas Rock days). Have you caught Degrassi, hmmm? They're improving all the time.

I ended up seeing degrassi loads after their 'comeback' about 2 years ago. They're ok. I can't stand the drummer's blatant desire to be a front man and his syncopation of pretty much everything. They would be much better if he just cooled off a bit. Should probably go see them again sometime soon just to see how they're getting on. Moniak are about 4000000.28 times better.

Moniak did play a few times at the cas rock. I caught them at the tap o lauriston once too.

Excellent - Tommy is a great bloke - is he dj-ing?!

I have some memories of Moniak. I am sure I have seen them - the name rings so many bells. More's the worry that I will probably have been stood in countless gig venues at the same time as you, hmmm.

Degrassi are getting better. I agree about Michael the drummer - he always was like that when he was in Chicane / Chi. Adding Bob on guitar has had a weird effect on the band - especially their audience.

I think he was playing some of his own music, like, with another band/by himself?

I didn't go, in the end.

Seems a bit bizarre. I'll have to find out...

I haven't seen them since just after bob joined and before chris left (I hear he's with Arab Strap now - true?). Which one is Tom?

Tom is the bassist. Haven't heard anything about Chris...

Anything to do with Firestone (Legend of the Hawk)? 'Heliopolis by Night' is the best song by a British band in about 15 years, even if it sounds like Yes.

two weeks pass...
So, I saw Monaick last night (spelling taken from the bassdrum, I assume it to be right).

They were pretty average. A bit prog, a lot rock. Not as exciting as I had been led to believe, I am afraid, but they had a loyal following.
