And "No Rain", despite (or because of) it being completely over-played at the time, still conjures up some nice "Summer of '93" images and feelings for me whenever I hear it.

"MTV and radio's abrupt abandonment of the band, harsh reviews from close-minded critics"
Way to go, Greg Prato (and nickalicious).
An extremely underrated album, if not band.

How was that last album - the posthumous one? I think it was called Nico?
to answer the question, not exactly classic, but very far from dud.

galaxie is one of the 90s greatest songs...i have a friend who swears by nico, but i always thought it was hit or miss. "all that i need" is about as good as it gets tho.

Yeah, the whole record is awesome. My other favorite from this album is Mouthful of Cavities.
re: the AMG review though
It appeared as though the band rejected the jovial spirit of No Rain and focused on much darker material for their follow-up, Soup.
The rest of the s/t debut album is a whole lot darker than No Rain - if not as good as Soup. The first album mostly sounds like "a band that is influenced by Led Zeppelin". No Rain sticks out like a sore thumb and sounds like it could be Jellyfish or something.

I still like "Dear Ol' Dad".

There's a song on SOUP (near the middle) with violin in it that speeds up at the end called like "God's Cadillac"(?) or something. I heard it in my dream the other night.

i've been waiting patiently for that for years, xpost. i tried timidly to boost these guys on some "underrated" thread and was politely dismissed, if i remember correctly, so the love on this thread is great. soup has to be one of my most played albums of all time, even if it's been years since i listened to it.

i think part of the problem is that they're easily relegated to the overly confessional/life-is-pain kind of songwriting that people of a certain age will remember resonating as a teenager, but which perhaps they've grown out of. either that or people have them pegged as some happy shiny one hit wonder because of no rain (even though that's probably pretty bleak lyrically). I remember delving into Hoon's backstory a bit when i was into them, though, and to listen to a song like "new life," about his then pregnant wife or possibly newborn child, and his hope that it would provide him with some sort of peace or rebirth, and then discover that no, he od'd just a few months later, you can't really deny the raw honesty of it, even if at times is seems a bit over the top. still, a lot of the southern gothic kind of images he sonjures work really well, or at least i thought at the time. also, the band is sick...they pull off a lot of really strange and varied things on soup, but the album still coheres really well.
