I'm looking for a list of good songs (new and old, but fairly well known) that have a theme of being alone or unloved from a woman's point of view (i.e. I'm Not In Love - 10cc, Don't You Want Me Baby - Human League, Lonely Girl - Tony Bennet, So Tired Of Being Alone - Al Green). Thanks in advance!

Ignoring gender-specificity....

"She Doesn't Exist" by Robyn Hitchcock
"Dalliance" by the Wedding Present
"That's What I Get"/"Something I Can Never Have" by Nine Inch Nails
"Stigmata" by Ministry (this is up for debate)
"Does Everyone Stare?" by the Police

"Kingdom of Rain' by The The (w/ Sinead O'Connor)

The grandaddy of them all : Gordon Lightfoot -- If You Could Read My Mind. The gender is not specified.
New Order -- Loveless (Barney's best ever lyric)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 19 March 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"Sweaters" -- Laurie Anderson
"Don't Smoke in Bed" -- Nina Simoone
"All I Could Do Was Cry" -- Miss Etta James

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

is "don't you want me" about being unloved from a woman's point of view. it's quite the reverse, innit?

Ella Fitzgerald, "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" and "Lush Life"
Not well known, but Look Blue Go Purple's "I Don't Want You Anyway" is a good one.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I Get Along Without You Very Well - Frank Sinatra

"is "don't you want me" about being unloved from a woman's point of view. it's quite the reverse, innit?"

I'm assuming that was a mistake, all the others mentioned at the top are men's songs too.

Pretty much anything off Jandek's Blue Corpse.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Would it be too obvious to suggest Talking Heads' "I'm Not In Love"? Yeah? Well FUCK YOU TOO MANG.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"I Used to Say I Love You" by Robyn Hitchcock

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha, I want to suggest 'I used to love her (but I had to kill her)' by guns'n'roses, but that would be silly.

The Free Movement, "I've Found Someone Of My Own."

"Oh, you've been cheating too? Goody for you!"

Pernice Brothers -- Clear Spot

'Cry Me A River' (maybe)
'I Ain't Gonna Cry No More' - Timi Yuro (though launching a tirade against an ex on the eve of one's marriage perhaps raises questions about whether one has really let go)
'I Will Survive' - Gloria Gaynor (duh, though see above)
'Thank You' - Jamelia
'Atta Girl' - Heavenly
'Just Go Away' - Blondie (not actually sure what situation this is dealing with)

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 March 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard Ol' Blue Eyes version of "I Get Along Without You Very Well," but I was going to recommend Chet Baker's version.

field mice 'willow'

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 20 March 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

What does "from a woman's point of view" actually mean? A female singer? A reference to a him from a her?

bnw (bnw), Saturday, 20 March 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

A female singer, pretty much, yeah.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 20 March 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the field mice song is great cause isn't it him having his new girlfriend sing to his old girlfriend? or am i wrong there?

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

no you're right. creepy as hell.

"A Mighty Thin Line Between Love and Hate" by Johnny Paycheck.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"Overtime" by Lucinda Williams. Sort of.

cis (cis), Saturday, 20 March 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"I Get Along Without You Very Well" is about still being in love, you crazies!

"The Thrill is Gone" by Chet Baker or Billie Holiday
"I'm Falling Out of Love With You" by the 6ths

are both "I'm not in love with you anymore" songs. But it also seems like you're asking for songs about being "unloved," or about a love that unrequited--and if this is the case there are literally thousands of them--a whole genre, in fact, called "torch songs."

antexit (antexit), Saturday, 20 March 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I am totally confused as to what the questioner wanted. 'I'm Not In Love', 'Don't You Want Me Baby' and 'Tired Of Being Alone' seem to describe totally different situations. I don't know Tony Bennett's 'Lonely Girl'. Can anyone explain?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 20 March 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"Since I Left You" by The Avalanches, though I'm not sure what circles fall under "well known."

Alex Pittman (Alex Pittman), Saturday, 20 March 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better" - The Byrds

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 20 March 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

"96 Tears," maybe? Or how 'bout "Your Gonna Miss Me, Babe," by the 13th Floor Elevators? Or the last track on The Buddy Holly Story (I think it's called "It Doesn't matter anymore?" Those are all pretty aggressive, I guess. And male.

Oh, what about "I Cover the Waterfront"--Billie's version? That actually is from a woman's POV.

two years pass...
Well, I didn't want to take all night reading all the above entries, but ... these people are all amateurs. I have to agree that "being alone or unloved from a woman's point of view" covers a multitude of sins, but if I read you correctly, then check these out.

(I'm So) Hurt by Timi Yuro
I Can't Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt (sp?)
Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez
I'll Be Seeing You by take your pick (can't go wrong with Billie Holliday)
(Take Another Little) Piece of My Heart by Big Brother & the Holding Company
It Should Have Been Me by Gladys Knight & The Pips

Here are some that are applicable to either sex, but were hits by men:
Heat of the Moment by Asia
Only Time Will Tell by Asia
What If I'd Been the One by .38 Special
I Keep Forgettin' by Michael McDonald
I Can Let Go Now by Michael McDonald
Crazy by Patsy Cline
End of the World by Skeeter Davis
I'll Be Watching You by Police

IRMC. Good luck!
