Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd recommend the Gondry and Jonze DVDs, and, even though it's got fuck-all on it, the Cunningham one too, because he's better than either of the other two in my opinion. They're very fucking good (Gondry in particular), but Cunningham is an actual genius.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I was always dead tempted by the Massive Attack Eleven Promos disc.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Led Zeppelin DVD is improbably incredible. I have no idea how the sound was mastered that well.

Bjork Royal Opera House concert - a wonderful performance and incredible 5.1 used more as art than ambience. Plus closeups of Matmos at work.

Neil Young In Berlin for sheer weirdness (Trans tour).

southern lights (southern lights), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Interstella 5555 is my favorite thing ever.

Pulp's collection which has the "Help the Aged" video, which is what I base my life on.

The Bjork disc is terrific (in addition to the Gondry vids, it has Nick Knights "Pagan Poetry" and other fantastic stuff).

Saint Etienne - Smash the System will make you happy.

This just arrived in my inbox. Some folks here will care way, way more than I do.

GALAXIE 500
DON'T LET OUR YOUTH GO TO WASTE (1987-1991)
2-Disc DVD Set

2-disc DVD set with over 3 1/2 hours of live performances including unreleased songs, their entire music video collection, a never-before-seen UK television performance with filmed interview, as well as a deluxe booklet containing interviews with all three band members by James McNew of Yo La Tengo.

Street date: June 29, 2004

"Galaxie 500 could be one of the most influential bands to emerge from the late-80's independent rock scene." Karen Schoemer, THE NEW YORK TIMES

"Galaxie 500 made some of the starkest, most beautiful, American underground music of the past decade." - MELODY MAKER

"Galaxie 500 is a wintry opiate. A hypnotic open loop of gentle drums, a bass that becalms like a mother's finger to her lips, and a guitar that drifts purposefully from languid to leveling. A voice singing high and strange. Sounds like love (lost) in a cool snap."
Pat Blashill, SPIN

Establishing itself as the independent leader in music DVDs with such highly-acclaimed releases as I AM TRYING TO BREAK YOUR HEART (named by ROLLING STONE as one of the top ten rock concert movies) and the legendary graffiti/hip hop film STYLE WARS, Plexifilm is following suit with Galaxie 500's DON'T LET OUR YOUTH GO TO WASTE (1987-1991), a comprehensive two-disc visual document spanning the career of one of indie rock's most influential and beloved bands.

A compendium of all their music videos, a TV appearance, and an archive of over 40 songs performed live, DON'T LET OUR YOUTH GO TO WASTE includes a performance of an unreleased original song "Buzz in My Head" and a live version of Jonathan Richman's "Back in Your Life," both of which were never recorded or released in any other form. The deluxe booklet contains photos and an interview with all three members, Dean Wareham, Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang conducted by Yo La Tengo's James McNew.

DON'T LET OUR YOUTH GO TO WASTE (1987-1991) is a four-hour visual document of Galaxie's ethereal performances as well as their entire career. It has countless live songs culled from eight shows, including two tracks which are exclusive to this DVD. From fan footage to professionally-produced segments, the concerts have been compiled from over 40 hours of performances, starting from an early local show at the Middle East in Boston in 1988, to a full set at a November 1990 concert at the University of London. The NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS raved about a concert, "Galaxie 500 are the world's premier softness trio. Live they leave you stunned."

The first disc contains all four of their videos, directed by friend and photographer Sergio Huidor as well as segments taken from five concerts--from early local performances in Boston to 1990 west coast tour dates--which all came from the band's personal collections. It is rounded out with a performance and interview for UK television, taken at the band's peak in popularity.

The second disc, or "Bootlegs" disc, has two full concerts from 1990: the first in Atlanta and the second in London, both shot by audience members. After receiving tapes by a call-out to fans from around the world, the band curated all the footage and picked what best captured their career.

ABOUT GALAXIE 500:
One of the most important rock groups of the 80s and 90s, before the word "alternative" became industry jargon, Galaxie 500 blended a unique celestial sound with the American rock 'n' roll minimalism of such underground icons as The Velvet Underground as well as referencing the rock canon with frequent nods to The Beatles. Formed in 1987 by three high school friends who all ended up at Harvard together, Galaxie 500's trademark reverb-drenched sonic daydream made possible by producer and Shimmy Disc label owner Kramer established them as one of the great unsung American bands. After their debut record, TODAY, released on Boston microlabel Aurora, the band was commercially overlooked stateside, but across the Atlantic it was another story. With such adulatory proclamations the likes of "Galaxie 500 transcend transcendence" (MELODY MAKER) the band signed to U.K. label Rough Trade which released their brilliant follow-up, ON FIRE.

Again championed by the British press (SOUNDS called the record "utter magnificence" and MELODY MAKER, "a stunning collection of daydream pop") the band naturally went across the pond to tour. Following incessant European touring, their subsequent album was THIS IS OUR MUSIC, a reference to Ornette Coleman's eponymous jazz album recorded exactly 30 years earlier. The trio again embarked on another tour of Europe with an appearance at the giant Glastonbury Music Festival in the U.K. Poised to take rock by storm, this proved to be their last album, the group disbanding in 1991. Dean subsequently formed Luna with members of The Feelies and The Chills and recently released an album of duets with Britta Phillips on Jetset records. Damon and Naomi continued to write and record together as the duo "Damon & Naomi", first for Kramer's Shimmy Disc label and since then for Sub Pop Records. They have also recorded with the Japanese band Ghost, the Boston underground band Magic Hour, and Tom Rapp from the 60s acid-folk group Pearls Before Swine.

I'd say that one tends more toward "search" than "destroy".

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 19 March 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

pavement - slow century

wilco - im trying to break your heart

dean! (deangulberry), Friday, 19 March 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone seen the recent Ted Leo DVD, and if so is it worth it?

For some reason, I was quite disappointed by the Wilco documentary. I felt like it documented neither the record-making process or the label relationship well, and the strongest parts were the live bits. It was well-made as a film, but not as a story.

southern lights (southern lights), Friday, 19 March 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 19 March 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Search: The Jam DVD with all the live stuff and all the videos if you like The Jam.

Destroy: The Felt dvd cuz they are my favorite band and the sound is horrible and the picture is even worse. I find it hard to believe that this is the ONLY video footage of them live. Very sad.

I want to get that Slade movie that I saw advertised, and someone has to come out with a complete Marc Show dvd so that I can die happy.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 19 March 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

As has been stated numerous times (but usually only by Ned and myself), there really needs to be a complete New Order DVD with all their promo videos (Jonathan Demme! Robert Longo! Kathryn Bigelow(?!).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 19 March 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

search The Who-The Kids are Allright...where they restore A Quick One to it's complete length.

destroy Pink Floyd-Live at Pompei...where the director changes the title fonts, adds new "stock" footage. You can watch the "original concert film" with the original titles and no extra footage, but they edit out the interview and Dark Side recording segments.

destroy The Fall-Perverted By Language Bis...where Cherry Red does a shitty job with the transfer and puts out a DVD that doesn't look as good as my old IKON Fall VHS

and yeah...I have New Order Substance on VHS...it's an absolute classic, can't believe it's not on DVD yet. Worth it for the Bizarre Love Triange interlude alone.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 19 March 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The live Nick Cave one looks good if his performance of the Mercy Seat is anything to go buy. Now all I need is a DVD player to watch it on...

search:

- the brazilian prince sign of the times concert thing which is cheap (do not belive the hating audio/videophiles, it sounds and looks fine, or, it's so good that it doesn't matter that lots of it looks like a third generation vhs tape.)
- roxy music live at the apollo (which i'll never shut up about)
- pet shop boys' pop art
- cheap trick's music for hangovers
- talking heads' stop making sense
- the aforementioned bjork opera house thing and bjork video collection

dan (dan), Friday, 19 March 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I only got a DVD player in late November for my birthday, and I don't really understand how you're supposed to WATCH DVDS; I mean, I NEVER play them all the way through; does anybody? I get bored too quick, and don't have time, so I just jump around. So it seems weird to me that anybody would actually pay MONEY for these things! I guess my favorite DVD I got since then is the one that comes with the Lil Jon EP. I have also kept ones (off the top of my head) by Rammstein, Can (3 DVD set!), Amon Duul, Justin Timberlake, Enigma, Dropkick Murphys, Ghoultown (another bonus one with their CD), Weird Al Yankovic, Jethro Tull, the Gathering, Opeth, and, um, a few others I can't think of right now. I've enjoyed the parts of these that I've seen. Bonus ones that come with recent Ryuchi Sakamoto and Kill Me Tomorrow albums don't seem to be nearly as good as the albums themselves.

chuck, Saturday, 20 March 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Of the ones I've kept, by the way, the one I'd say would be the biggest ripoff if I'd actually paid for the thing would probably be the Amon Duul one, where nothing fucking ever happens! But the music is pretty good, I guess. Not as good as on their albums, though.

chuck, Saturday, 20 March 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

chuck wears the permanent sad hat.

dean! (deangulberry), Saturday, 20 March 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, woops forgot one: Skye Sweetnam's one is the first GREAT DVD I've seen. It's insane! I'm not sure if it's actually for sale, though, or just a promo, or what.

chuck, Saturday, 20 March 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

As has been stated numerous times (but usually only by Ned and myself), there really needs to be a complete New Order DVD with all their promo videos (Jonathan Demme! Robert Longo! Kathryn Bigelow(?!).

Quite, quite so.

Spencer inadvertantly made me sad because I misplaced my Pulp DVD some months back before I could even watch it, and now I don't know where it is. :-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Search: Don't Look Back, Depeche Mode 101, The Last Waltz, The Kids Are Alright, Monterey Pop, Stop Making Sense, Fugazi's Instrument, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, and the Led Zeppelin disc are all great, and packed with a lot extra stuff.

It's not on DVD yet, but the 2 1/2 hour New Order Story doc is great. I have a VHS version. It has most of the videos on it.

The Ted Leo disc is OK, but probably not worth watching more than once.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh that Galaxie 500 DVD set DOES look pretty good..

i'd like the St Etienne one as well. and "Watch Me Jumpstart". and i'd like to see a comp of Yo La Tengos vids too (i can live without live footage as a rule...)

I saw that at the store on Thursday and came THIS CLOSE ( || ) to buying it. Let me know how it is. Full review!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 21 March 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, but I spent £30 on jazz albums instead. Review from someone else?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 21 March 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
The Can DVD package is actually two Video discs and one audio disc that features music composed by each of the four "band" members (no Damo or Malcolm material) since the group's original run. I have yet to even remove it from the package.

The very best thing about the set is the Can Free Concert film from 1972 that was shot by a Wim Wenders associate (Peter Pyrzgoda or something) and runs about 45 minutes. It's an amazing visual document of the band that kind of mirrors the way they made their albums. There are studio sessions interspersed with the concert footage and both the video and the audio are mixed together. At a certain point, it becomes pretty difficult to tell if what you are seeing matches with what you are hearing, but by then you're too flabbergasted to care. There are some pretty ridiculous guest artists (a juggler, some acrobats, the worst saw player ever) and cool crowd footage (an incredibly intense man with dark shades and lotsa hair that seems to not move an inch through the entire performance).
Completely essential for Can fans, I'd say, unless they already own the box set that came out with the Free Concert film and the also excellent documentary. The documentary features the band in 98 or so sitting around talking about how great they were and then provides examples of that greatness via German and UK television appearances starting with a promo for the Soundtracks album but ending terribly with a video for a remix of I Want More by West Bam. Highlights include video for I Want More, live tv performance of Paper House (shirtless Damo AND Holger, priceless), and lots more, but sometimes the stuff that looks like it would be just amazing gets cut short (a live performance of Deadlock that only catches the first line makes me want to throw things).
Almost everthing else on the two dvd's is worthless or just amusing. Eno's tribute film is cute. John Frusciante and Flea awarding Can with Germany's Grammy equivalent is completely incomprehensible but pretty entertaining. The film that was made entirely at a photo shoot in 1998 is unwatchable and probably the longest feature on the set.
It's half brilliant, half boring, but I have watched it at least ten times since getting it last winter.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The John Fahey one i referenced on the acoustic raga's thread is REALLY awesome (nb: i've only seen the 1969 footage), particularly if you have any interest in double-thumb country blues style picking from the hills of northern mississippi.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The Jam one is good, the Style Council one is bad (no TV performances). Paul McCartney Back in the US one is bad, Led Zep one is good (except Knebworth). New Order Finsbury Park one is bad, so is Portishead NYC one, although both are OK to watch once. Belle and Sebastian one is good if you do not fear the twee. The Smiths one is a dreadful let-down really, shame it's not like the Jam one. Old Grey Whistle Test one has its moments, but the presenters (Fifty Quid Men) are bad. Abba one with all the videos is good, Queen one with videos (vol 1) is surprisingly duff. As noted above, the Felt one is a bit of a piss-take, but I still wish I hadn't sold it. First I wished I hadn't bought it, now I wish I hadn't sold it. If that's not value for money, I don't know what is.

Please note: these items were viewed without the aid of 5.1 surround sound, which might make them seem really fantastic.

revive?

that Galaxie 500 release is approaching release date...

Who thinks it will be worthwhile? or more like "don't let my cash go to waste"?

Any idea on quality of the disc 2 bootleg videos?

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i've watched the fahey one (the 69 program in particular)... it is so great... his personality reminds me soooo much of someone i used to make music with.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen the Galaxie 500 one. The quality on some of the live stuff is poor (it's all been remastered to the highest possible quality), but it's still priceless to watch (playing in a gym under a hoop is great). I very highly recommend it! (Also, the videos are excellent and they're charming in an interview).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 7 June 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Search: anything with Son House, Folk Music of the Sahara, Best of Bowie, PIL bootleg, Joy Division bootleg, Fall: Perverted by Language, Renaldo and Clara bootleg, parts of Plastic Ono Band dvd that aren't Plastic Ono Band (Bo Diddley, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry), T-Rex/Roxy Music two-fer.
Destroy: Spike Jonze

sexyDancer, Monday, 7 June 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't say destroy Spike Jonze at all, but when viewing his DVD compared to Gondry's, I thought

Spike's videos = one idea, let's do it.

Gondry's videos = one idea, let's think, more ideas, Is that even possible? How far can we go ---> more ideas.

Sublime Frecquencies "Jema El Fna: Night Music of Morrocco" disc is mesmerizing.
I need to see the Folk music of the Sahara one, for sure.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Monday, 7 June 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone seen that Birthday Party one? I'm interested, but I want an idea of the audio/visual quality since it's pretty expensive.

Hayden Nicholls (Pop the Weasel), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 09:01 (twenty-one years ago)

ok here goes. Art of Noise .. a weird one. live footage with a lovely Paul Morley acting out rock star fantasies while Ann Dudley laughs, strangeness, but still tis Art of Noise. fun and only £3 @ Fopp so who can complain.(they also have the Gorillaz DVD for £3 which is great value for that Hewlett animation ..)
Product Placement - Live DVD - i loved this .. whether i will watch it all again i dunno .. but damn just seeing the dynamic duo doing their thing live and not in some sweaty club full of fellow nerds is actually quite fun. Lots of extras .. including audio cd version of the live set.
Nick Cave DVD - hmm .. a little too down/dark for a full sit through, but some interesting vids .. and made me relaise just who Nick reminds me of .. Goofy. watch the Stagger Lee video, he is Goofy. for fans though. few extras other than a few nice stories.
Todd Rundgren - some weird shit involving him just talking and talking and talking to an audience as they record an album. total yawnsville. avoid.
my current fave is actually the Metallica St Anger dvd that comes with the album. i have actually sat thru the DVD more times than the album ..

Wire on Rockpalast ( 154 ), Factory videos comp, Led Zeppelin box, Roxy Music/T Rex on Musikladen, Yes at MSG 5/16/2004 bootleg, Melody Nelson , Anna , Smiths @ Versailles

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The Birthday Party dvd is high-quality. My only complaint is that the vocals are too high in the mix at certain points at one live date, but that's the soundman's fault (or Cave's--it's his show, really). The promo vid for "Nick The Stripper" is worth the bux, though. Felliniesque, they called it.

darla is listing a double DVD of Joy Division's Here are the Young Men and Substance (which includes other promos, tv specials, etc). Has anyone seen it yet? They also claim the sound on the live stuff from HATYM is much improved over the VHS (which was crappy). Is this an official release or some kind of bootleg?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember being so disappointed by here are the young men when i finally saw it. I couldn't believe that there wasn't better footage out there somewhere. I will definitely buy the double thing id and when it comes out.

Just wanna say again that the Incredible String Band thing I bought which was a never-aired BBC film from 1969 is great. Apparently it played in movie theatres once upon a time. It's too short, but I love it. I could watch live footage of them forever.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

it's prolly the bootleg that's been making the rounds.
Video quality is crap, but the sound is ok.
Dark settings don't translate well to cheep-o digital.
The performances, however, are incredible, and if you're even vaugely a Curtis fan, you need to see his dance moves...
(bonus smug Tony Wilson action included)
