Ideally from a woman's point of view, but whatever.

I can't think of any. I mean indie music thinks it's all good at breaking the conventions of pop lyrics and dealing with low self-esteem and shit, but it's still pretty hung up on the self-centred, self-justification tack when it comes to things like this.

"Oops, I did it again" by Britney Spears

Joe Ross, Friday, 19 March 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn. Duh!

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 March 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick this is a fucking excellent question, because the standard indie lovesong trope is "I'm such an asshole!" (see: most Sebadoh, the template for this, and often quite good so this isn't a dis-Lou thing or nothin') but specifically assholish behaviors are conspicuous by their absence: self loathing in (indie?) rock is largely limited to really vague and narcissistic verses, "The Holy Bible" being a very strange exception

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 19 March 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I asked it in a slightly different way once before, but thanks for the interest. I've never listened to The Holy Bible, but I would maybe like to.

OK, I was thinking of this thread but it was pretty different really, and I didn't specify that I didn't mean defensive, lashing-out lyrics.

Everry song Danny McNamara ever wrote was trying to express this.

ABBA 'why did it have to be me'

verses: the man's point of view
bridge: the woman's point of view

Casey Scott's "7th of November" from her Creep City (i think) cd. She was hyped to hell as being the next PJ Harvey (!?@ ) by her label in the early nineties. Alas that was not to be and the disc was largely forgettable save for this song. Good luck trying to download it but copies can easily be had for about a dollar in the sub-used bins of most large used discs retailers I've visited.

Howlin' Maggie's "I'm a Slut" may or may not fit this, but I likes it.

Babe now why should I
Feel guilty 'cause I won't give
Guilty 'cause I won't give in

"Cunt Tease" by Pussy Galore

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 20 March 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I was thinking about slightly more tender-hearted sentiments, but all this is good anyway.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 20 March 2004 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure Liz Phair has tackled this one.

linda ronstadt 'different drum'?

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 20 March 2004 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the pastels version too

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 20 March 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so indie I even like the Lemonheads version.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 20 March 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

but there wouldn't be no pastels and there wouldn't be no lemonheads either without the monkees, whose mike nesmith wrote "different drum."

Even better: Cherelle's original version of "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On."

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Saturday, 20 March 2004 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"I work all day and I won't fight
When it feels right and its wrong
When the fireworks in me are all gone
Then I realised
And I won't need convincing
I've seen enough to want to change things
You fell in love, I fell in line
I thought I'd found my place
Before I knew how much it cost to play it safe
Could I leave you,
I'll never let you down.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 20 March 2004 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Douglas is the rightest, especially on the extended 7 min mix when the music starts to spiral out of control and Cherelle implores "I loved you for a friend but I guess this is the end of our relationship". Probably the most killer bit of the most killer song I've heard this year.

Affectian (Affectian), Saturday, 20 March 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)
