Is Craig Nicholls of the Vines a head case or putting it on?

The conventional wisdom is that he's putting it on. Certainly when I've seen him on television his behaviour seems irritatingly calculated and selfconscious. But I wonder if that in itself qualifies as weird behaviour - persisting in pretending to be weird to that extent; it's not normal.

There was an interview with him in the paper today, and I got the impression that he genuinely does have some behavioural problems, and I suddenly felt sorry for him. Does he have to top himself or whatever to prove his point, or should we just give him the benefit of the doubt?

He's the Hamlet of indie.

No, but if he feels the need to top himself for other reasons, then that's just fine.

Is Craig Nicholls of the Vines a head case or putting it on?

Bigger question: Who cares?

lead paint

The question to ask here is: Does it help him shift more units?

Dadaismus (Dada), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

He's like the kid from Brat Camp.

Affectian (Affectian), Saturday, 20 March 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

He needs a crowbar in the teeth more than anybody I can think of, except maybe GWBush.

no true head case could make music as dull as the Vines.

noodle OTM!

(ugh. I have so much to say about these guys but am writing a review of the new one and don't wanna give the eggs away for free before hand....)

i would've thought they'd be right up your alley, Anthony (not meant as a provocative statement, btw).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 20 March 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

in short, I adore the Nirvana bubblegum ("Get Free" was my fave single of 2001) cuz that's what I thought Nirvana was when I was a kid (magazines are to blame for making me realize they were so much MORE - ugh). But the Vines' hippy dippy stuff is completely worthless. I'm just intrigued by their wanton flip-flopping between the two sounds. Less predictable than Oasis (but who isn't?)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 20 March 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

That makes a bit more sense.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 20 March 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

frankly, and here's where I may get into trouble, without his Nirvana rips this guy would just be Syd Barrett.

*runs far, far away*

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 20 March 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

But really now....the Vines are the Good Charlotte of grunge.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 20 March 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Craig Nicholls is Syd Barrett? BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

You need serious psychiatric assistance, Antoine.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 20 March 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe I'm Syd Barrett then. Have you heard the Vines full-lengths, Alex? It's loaded with Barretty nothingness (most of the its not coherent enough to be Donovany nothingness)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 20 March 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how the label keeps the Vines' psychedelia off MTV. Now if only they'd keep it off the albums!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 20 March 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I have Highly Evolved (though did not pay for it, mercifully). Barrett did not spring to mind upon hearing it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 20 March 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know that one as well as the new one, but from the Syd Barrett I've heard, Nicholls' acoustic gibberish sounds pretty similar to Barrett, except Barrett used more interesting nouns.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 20 March 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm laughing more at the audacity of the statement (I hold poor old Syd pretty in pretty high esteem). Nicholls may aspire to be like Syd, but I think it's a bold statement otherwise.

i totally could have come up with better titles in my sleep. with one hand tied behind my back. underwater. why even bother> "Song No.1", "Song No.2", etc would have been better.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 23 February 2006 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Every uptempo song will be awesome and every slow one will blow.

Zwan (miccio), Thursday, 23 February 2006 17:18 (twenty years ago)
