Can we perhaps have a thread that names the best instrumental rock ? (all subgenres count)
Need some downloading tips.

I'm really digging Pelican's self titled EP just now.

christoff (christoff), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

some recent stuff:

storm and stress, battles - ian williams from don cab is involved with these

hella - duo, fast drums, fast guitar, get 'Hold Your Horse Is', most of everything else by them is pants

crime in choir - sometimes has zach from hella on drums, i wish he'd play beats like this more often, songs are fairly weak tho

volta do mar - 2 basses, drums and guitar, gets a bit samey, don't like the start/stop thing too much, but at least they develop ideas and have some movement in their songs

U.I - some hip music journo's band? 2 basses and drums and splashes of other stuff, i love these guys, makes great party music too

dilute - did a split with hella, mostly instrumental, beautiful guitar work, expertly crafted songs, 'grape olive spinach blueprint' (or something) is the one to get.

all these new jammy bands, sunburned hand of the man, vibracathedral orchestra etc etc

oxes - glorious instrumental rock music, two guitars and drums, very 'cool', well-picked riffs, not over the top

those are some of my most listened to.

btw, did anyone see hella in london the other night? anyone else disapointed with it? are they usually good live? i mean they're amazing, but everything just ended up sounding the same. i don't find this with them on cd.

'destroy: the Captain-less disc on "Grow Fins"'

Really? I thought that was a very interesting listen as you could hear the bones of the song and pick things apart. After hearing those demos, I gained even more respect for the tunes.

Trans Am has completely fell off of the cool band chart, but there are some good tracks on their records. (I haven't heard the last two.)

Haha, I'm giving last year's Cougar album, Patriot another few listens because it's on the albums voting list! It's a dead-cert for my top 10. Utterly superb. Especially the second half, where it becomes *really fucking beautiful* as well as impressive. May try Volta do Mar (lol their name, it's like a band called Gigante del Gentile)

Awe man, for some reason that post reminded me of an album that I haven't heard in a long time, but is totally great:

The Danny Gatton live album "Redneck Jazz Explosion" with Buddy Emmons.

Amazing stuff. Look up some clips of Gatton playing, pretty fascinating.

grandavis, Thursday, 5 August 2010 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

Maserati... can't believe I've only just heard them last week. Seconding the Grails recommendation upthread. I haven't yet heard a dud album from them.

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 5 August 2010 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

Redneck Jazz Explosion seconded! incredible album.. there's a 2 cd reissue that came out a few years back that contains both shows in their entirety, iirc.

hobbes, Thursday, 5 August 2010 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe this is an old guy thing. I'll second Maserati and Grails. Also, I keep going back to various live Mermen sets on the Internet Archive.

Brad C., Thursday, 5 August 2010 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

i have a soft spot for some Harvey Mandel.. Cristo Redentor, Baby Batter, The Snake are all full of smokin hot grooves.

this isn't really bluesy or smokey... just straight up majestic.. one of my all-time favorites:
Harvey Mandel - Pegasus (from The Snake album)

i was just watching this the other day. Jones+Lane... such an un-f-withable rhythm section.

Redneck Jazz Explosion seconded! incredible album.. there's a 2 cd reissue that came out a few years back that contains both shows in their entirety, iirc.

Awesome! I haven't owned this record in years, but I am on a guitar-solo AND pedal steel kick somewhat, so this is just the ticket. Hard to explain what this band was going for that wouldn't put people off, but they sure nailed it. Super-virtuosic, shredding, and tasteful somewhat all at once.

Someone mentioned "Sleepwalking" above, which will forever be a winning answer to this kind of question. I just saw a posted YouTube of Danny Gatton playing a solo rendition, which, while I haven't watched it yet, I can only imagine is jaw-dropping, cause kinda all of his playing is. I'm gonna check it out when I am not at work!

grandavis, Thursday, 5 August 2010 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

I think this link will do

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyjtW-rvWoQ

Gatton plays "Sleepwalking".

grandavis, Thursday, 5 August 2010 18:43 (fifteen years ago)

Gatton was indeed a jawdropper. Pedant alert, "Sleepwalk" not "-ing." And I don't think there's much love for Brian Setzer around here, but I think this is great:

I love this mellow instrumental

coincidence?

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 5 August 2010 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

Ah right, "Sleepwalk". Not sure how the -ing got into my brain, but pedantry earned. It is a classic song that should not be sullied by me.

Gonna watch that other vid later for sure. B. Setzer is alright by me.

brimstead, Tuesday, 18 June 2019 18:08 (six years ago)

I've probably mentioned this on another thread, but Harvey Mandel's "Wade in the Water" was one of the first 45s I owned as a kid, back when you could buy a bag of 5 cutout singles for the price of one new one. Divided into Part 1 on the A side, Part 2 on the flip. I wore that sucker out.
