Anyone know whats happening with the former Rage singer?

Jeff Jackson (MusicFilter), Sunday, 21 March 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

He shouted a little on the last Blackalicious album.

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Sunday, 21 March 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Hopefully reforming Inside Out

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 21 March 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Hanging around with Mos Def actively not releasing albums.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 21 March 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

And this is not so bad.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 21 March 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

as Audioslave. Yes.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 22 March 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

What an annoying, silly-looking twat, eh?

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 22 March 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Inside Out kicked ass. I listened to the No Spiritual Surrender EP yesterday. Hadn't heard it in forever. He'll never top that.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Monday, 22 March 2004 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

last heard him on that Shadow track 'March Of Death' which was around a year ago now

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...
zachs got a cd coming out soon, and no one really knows why rage broke up, i havent heard inside out, but i gotta download some soon, my friend and me are debating it, because ive read some stuff that says tom, brad, and tim kicked him out because they didn't like his point of veiw, but then again ive read stuff that said the band was suprised when he quit
so no one really knows
and if any body hears about a band called impulse, thats me and my band, we're hopefully trying 2 become the next ratm, i write lyrics real politicly
check out my site if you want www.freewebs.com/lyrics0272/

reggie, Monday, 19 April 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

You misspelled "oblivion," "kerosene," and "doctrine." You'll need to get those right to become the next RATM.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I like how he quotes himself in between Sun Tzu and Che Guevara

Every white kid in America needs a beatin'

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Rage Against The Machine, brought to you by Sony International (aka the Machine)

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

You misspelled "oblivion," "kerosene," and "doctrine."

"Politically" as well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

the 'book' he's writing also misspells "capitalism" in its title

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

you fools, don't you know that correct spelling is just another tool of The Man?? You really need to overstand this.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

the 'book' he's writing also misspells "capitalism" in its title

I was actually willing to give the fella the benefit of the doubt here. "Capitolism" could be a screed about how Congress, like, sucks and stuff.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

To address reggie seriously, i thought it was pretty obvious what happened. Zach quit. Some interviews near the turgent end make it pretty damn clear that he wasn't fond of what the band became and where they were going. (one incident where the bass player did something really childish and silly on the MTV awards or something was one of many straws that contributed to breaking the camel's back, i think, so to speak.) But if i am mistaken, someone here please corrent me.

I think Audioslave pretty much make it even more clear why Zach quit.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 April 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

With that information, I imagine the bassplayer renaming himself "Tim2K" also contributed.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Rage Against The Machine, brought to you by Sony International (aka the Machine)

yes, that certainly invalidates any point they might have! you got 'em there!

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Rage are one of the few bands where my opinion of their modus operandi has changed in the last few years. I tried really hard to dislike their means, mainly because I abhored their music, and therefore the baggage of "HAW HAW THEY'RE TRYING TO CHANGE THE WORLD WITH MUSIC. HOW FOOLISH THEY MUST BE" came along with my criticisms of the music... I'm still not exactly a fan of their music, and some of their ways of getting their message across, but I now do appreciate them more that they tried at least.. perhaps, if Rage existed during the Bush Jr. administration as opposed to the Clinton administration, opinions would have been different. Or not.

Also, in retrospect, Chumbawamba did some things quite parallel to Rage, yet they were glorified for it (at least amongst many ILMers)... maybe because "Tubthumper" was a more pleasant song. (which I feel is true). Then again, Rage Against The Machine never recorded a split EP with Negativland shortly after the height of their career.

Anyway, blah blah blah

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, it's obvious that the politics left with Zach leaving. Pitchfork really nailed Audioslave correctly by calling them "beach volleyball rock."

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder how many people who listened to RATM were aware of/swayed by their political stances (if the answer is ANY then RATM were a good thing.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Rage really managed to sway or convert a lot of their listeners. Some of their fans were already involved in left-wing or progressive politics while the majority just couldn't be bothered. It's not really a cool thing to say nowadays in many places but I really liked this band. They openly professed to care about things at a time when ironic detachment was the fashion. In high school I used to wrestle with the question of how they could pursue their anti-corpratist agenda while being signed to Epic/Sony. Although I eventually made my peace with the whole situation, I know that Zach in interviews, struggled with the same issue. "Evil Empire" is still one of my favourite albums. I think it's the closest that they ever got to a cohesive RATM sound. On the other records the metal and the hip-hop influences are often quite distinguishable and are fused together a little awkwardly. By all accounts that same tension eventually caused Zach to bail. I don't care about Audioslave, but I'm holding out hope for Z de la R's solo output.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The only Rage songs I could stomach were released after Evil Empire. Which is why I think it's a shame they broke up.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

what really gets me is that people who bust out the "but they're on a major label! HYPOCRITES" deal are the same people who, if they hear you're thinking about voting third-party, give you long & boring lectures about "changing the system by working within the system" and will lesser-of-two-evils you until you pass out

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Sign Dennis Kucinich to Epic Records and they'll all explode.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Zack de la Rocha ft. Dennis Kucinich "Dept. of Peace NOW MOTHERFUCKERS" (DJ Shadow endless stormclouds remix)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Evil Empire is one of my favorite rock recordings, in terms of the sound.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

- I find their Marxist posturing disingenuous.
- I've never subscribed to the anti-3rd party/"lesser of two evils" leftist argument and often argue against it.
- RATMs music is largely unlistenable.
- The coolest thing they ever did was play for the Zapatistas in Mexico at the height of their struggle.

And that's about all the mental energy I have to waste on them...

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I never really saw how they were a "political" band from their lyrics or music. Iconography and presentation, sure, but what's so super-political about "diagonal tic tac toe blah blah fuck you I won't do what you tell me?"

hstencil, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, they're more political than the nu-metal bands that those tunes get played next to on the radio, at least. How explicit does any really 'political' band get without sounding completely cheesy anyway?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Political vs. politicized (and the latter option usually drives me up a wall).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, the Minutemen were pretty capable of being explicit without being cheesy when the need arose.

hstencil, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

the Minutemen's "Corona" being a good example.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't find Zach's lyrics corny at all. I also bump my head on low doorframes.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
so i wrote a thing on my new blogthing about this early today, but zach's new single, "we want it all," is really, really, really fucking good.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmmm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

damn that sounds good yanc3y but i'm afraid i'm going to be disappointed when i actually here it .....drive like jehu! damn.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Goddman it, how do I hear this? Has it leaked? This sounds like it'll be great. I see ZdlR from time to time, minding his own business at local coffee shops and diners. He seems really nice, plus he gave a shitload of money to a local battered women's shelter. So haters can eat it. But, yeah, I really want to hear this.

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

He seems really nice, plus he gave a shitload of money to a local battered women's shelter. So haters can eat it.

Hold on, someone can be very cool and STILL produce a lot of crap, so no confusing of the two. If he's finally done something worth listening to, fine (he's only had fifteen years practice...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Considering I saw Zach at the Hot Snakes show at the Troubadour show in L.A. when they first played their California shows (2000?), this is not surprising, and very promising. :)

OAH SEA BICH, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Goddman it, how do I hear this?

You hear a free snippet on the iTMS.

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, I just meant that lots of people are quick to assume that he doesn't practice what he preaches, but I don't think that's the case.

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

you can also buy it on the itunes store

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just earlier listening to a spoken word piece of his I found on good ol 5 L 5 K called "Land and Liberty" that is really quite fucking amazing. I hope that if (IF) he ever releases his solo album, he'll include that on it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

the iTunes snippet sounds like At the Drive-In

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

shit. oh well, so much for that then. :(
