Whatever happened to Shaun Ryder? -Mondays

Just wondering if anyone has kept up with Shaun Ryder? My collection follows: Happy Mondays, Heads, Black Grape, Mondays Reunion, Russel Watson-Barcelona,& Amateur Night at the Big Top. Anything missing? I saw there was something new with Drug Smugglaz or something like that, but I don't know if he actually does vocals.

there was a very sad documentary about him on BBC3 a few weeks ago. For about the last fivce years he has made no money at all beacuse after dumping his managers about five years ago they sued him and won and he now owes them a load of cash (about 250,000 pounds if i remember) so every penny he makes from gigs, dj slots, royalties, etc.. go es to them. therefore he is completely broke and living in a little terraced house somewhere in the north of england surviving on borrowed money from his friends. There is not much point in him releasing records until he's got his legal stuff sorted out or all the money goes to his former managers. A pretty sad story really - the only option (cave for winning his legal case, which seemed pretty unlikely from the doc) is bankrupcy, but the problem with that is that he would lose all of his royalty rights - for obvious reasons his main source of income.

Healthwise he was pretty bad - eating a pack of remmies every day to cope with heartburn - but certianly not a complete drug casualty. The heartwarmign part of the story is that he lives next door to bez, who seemeed to me to be in much worse health than sean...

To be honest, it's a victory that he's still here. He'll never go totally without, I suspect, because there will always be someone who remembers. Maybe this lawsuit-instigated poverty is God's way of reducing his drug intake, and in a strange way, amount to a blessing in disguise.

is there a website for donating to Sean? i would be tempted! but it's a bit like Nick Cotton. Dot wanted to help him but was too scared he's waste it on drugs.

This is heartwarming? You mean you put one recovering drug addict who has ruined his life, health and career next to another recovering drug addict who has ruined his life, health and career - and not just any recovering drug addict who has ruined his life, health and career but the same recovering drug addict who has ruined his life, health and career who was ruining his life, health and career in tandem with you when you were ruining your life, health and career. You see what I'm driving at?

i think he meant it was heart-warming that they're still mates and live next door to each other. regardless of their drug-addled conditions this is just LOVELY and a sitcom surely beckons ('Dungurnin'?)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

You must be on drugs - or maybe I am

chris (chris), Monday, 22 March 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the album he put out last year, Amateur Night at the Big Top, was dire

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 22 March 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i meant it was heartwarming that they are still mates.

according to the programme he was off all drugs execpt ganja, and booze. he spent a lot of time eating smoothies.

Robin Goad (rgoad), Monday, 22 March 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know about that. I saw a newspaper article about him recently, and he took some drugs before a dj slot. Small scale though, compared to his prodigious consumption of the past.

Bunged Out (Jake Proudlock), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know if I feel sorry for the guy or not. He wasted his own money on drugs and bad decisions, he got to travel the world and perform and basically get pissed for a living.
But of course, I partly feel bad about his situation -- for him as a human being and as a formerly (?) great performer.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i meant it was heartwarming that they are still mates

Sean: Ya know what, you're my besht fookin' mate, Besh.
Bez: No, you're my besht mate in the whole f-f-f-fookin' world.
Sean: Who are you again?

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry should read Shaun - I must lay off the booze and ganja and stick to the Rennies in future

scott there is a song by Happy Mondays called "kuff dam" on the Young Popular & Sexy compilation (Fac 151? if I am right about that please kill me) which will persuade you that they were at one point a truly fucking awesome band

J0hn D., Saturday, 12 January 2008 02:01 (eighteen years ago)

were they completely different then? to what they became.

scott seward, Saturday, 12 January 2008 02:02 (eighteen years ago)
