The correct answer is 'Piper At The Gates Of Dawn', with an honourable mention for 'Velvet Underground & Nico'.

I always read conflicting release dates for this, either Dec 1967 or Jan 1968. I'm going with the former for the purposes of this thread.

According to AllMusic.com it's Nov 1967, which I think is right.

Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd. with an HM to Forever Changes.

And if we do this for 1968, it'll be the Turtles, The Battle of the Bands.

I fully realise it's not "cool" to like the Doors any more, but I think their '67 début holds up pretty well.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd go with the first Moby Grape LP, because it's the pop album from '67 I enjoy the most.
Hendrix's and Beefheart's first are the most groundbreaking pop albums of the year. I'm just sick of the Velvet Underground myself.
"Cold Sweat" was the greatest popular song cut that year by a mile, forget "albums." Howard Tate was recording then too.
The best pop records made in '67 were Notorious Byrd Brothers and Odessey and Oracle (both released in '68). Sure, Forever Changes, but I still like the Byrds and Zombies releases better. Da Capo was recorded '66 but released '67, and of course its first side is unbeatable.
Yeah, George Jones!

The Leonard Cohen and Soft Machine albums are '68.

Michael Dubsky, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Forever Changes I believe was released in November of '67, tho I have seen sources citing 1968. These things can be hard to pin down - maybe sometimes advance copies are used to determine release dates which are actually a month or two later, on the cusp of a new year. Who knows?

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It is funny how whether an album was 1967 or 1968 seems important to us now, but at the time, it wouldn't have at all. I mean I don't really care if an album was released in late 2003 or early 2004. They seem the same. But 1967 or 1968 - woah, that's a big difference.

Were people avoiding saying 'Sgt Pepper' on purpose, by the way. Sorry if I spoiled the gag. I guess I just wasn't made for these times.
