Shortest thread ever, since there is only one conceivable answer.

Nick Lowe - "Jesus of Cool"

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

It would be boring to say 'Rumours' or 'Marquee Moon'.

Buffalo Stan (Buffalo Stan), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just been commissioned to write a short book about 'Low'. But as I do my research, I'm starting to think that 'Heroes' is actually the better album. Which could mean that 'Low' isn't even the best Bowie album to be released in 1977.

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The correct answer is *The Clash*

Not That Chuck, Monday, 22 March 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a school of thought that humbly suggests either "The Idiot" and/or "Lust for Life" as the best Bowie LP of 77. I'm with you on Heroes over Low. But my pick for that stellar year is the s/t debut of Cheap Trick. Not for importance or influence but pure pleasure.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Jonathan, why the book? (genuinely interested)

And yes, if push comes to shove, Low is my favorite '77 album. [and the cover is übergorgeous]

willem (willem), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh I want to hear that Congos record.

"Jonathan, why the book? (genuinely interested)"

I'm a writer, I pitched the idea a couple of months ago to Continuum Books for their 33 1/3 series. I've just been given the go-ahead. There's some blurb on the series here:

http://www.continuumbooks.com/series_details.cgi?sid=311&ssid=FLE50JGO00F8D8B020KABM

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Would they do one on "Let's play Domination" by World Domination Enterprises?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I've no idea. Here's the list of the next ten though (barring any of the writers backing out)

Led Zeppelin IV
London Calling
Sister Lovers
3 Feet High and Rising
Kick out the Jams
In the Aeroplane over the Sea
Born in the USA
Pet Sounds
Low
Endtroducing

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Monday, 22 March 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I've read about that series, can't remember where. Probably some blog.

Anyway, that sounds great, congratulations on the 'green light'! :)
I will keep an eye out for your contribution, any idea on when it will eventually be published?

willem (willem), Monday, 22 March 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Five will come out in spring '05, five more in autumn '05.

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Monday, 22 March 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The Continuum series has been mentioned on here occasionally, since ILMers Michaelangelo Matos, Chris Ott, and Douglas Wolk have all written books (on Prince, Joy Division, and James Brown, respectively).

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 22 March 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, Jonathan, do you know who's writing the ten you mentioned?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 22 March 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

W/ regards to best record of '77, I'll give you a hint: the title of this record is also the year in which it was released.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 22 March 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Boney M 'Love for Sale', Cerrone 'Supernature,' Foreigner 'Foreigner,' Heartbreakers 'L.A.M.F.' Richard Hell and Voidoids 'Blank Generation,' Hot Chocolate 'XIV Greatest Hits,' Plastic Bertrand 'Ca Plane Pour Moi,' Santa Esmeralda 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood,' Sex Pistols 'Never Mind the Bullocks,' Starz 'Violation,' Donna Summer 'I Remember Yesterday,' Donna Summer 'Once Upon a Time,' Vibrators 'Pure Mania,' 'Saturday Night Fever' soundtrack? Or maybe something somebody else already said (like, yeah, 'Rumours', Or 'The Clash'). Or maybe something else entirely.

chuck, Monday, 22 March 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Clash" by a very wide margin (even though I actually listen to "Low" more)

I'm with tricky disco...

and I actually think I like Lodger more then Low and Heroes. Like it's not as intense or something as the other two, but I think it's the most fun with the most good songs. Am I alone in this?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 22 March 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how the subject line specifies "ever to be released," as if people are continuing to release albums in 1977, and have done since the beginning of time.

Yeah count me firmly in the Lodger is Bowie's best camp, as I'm pretty sure I stated on the thread-

Is THE LODGER David Bowie's best record?

Best of '77, might go with this-

DB is right re Germ Free Adolescents. I must have been thrown by the chorus of "Plastic Bag," which specifically mentions 1977.

mike a, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I was only kidding when I said "Storm Force Ten" by Steeleye Span (v. good tho it is), the real answers were:

Kraftwerk - Trans Europe Express (this is no. 1)
The Saints - (I'm) Stranded
Al Green - Belle
Suicide - Suicide
Wire - Pink Flag
Television - Marquee Moon
Pere Ubu - Modern Dance (or was that '78?)
David Bowie - Low
Ramones - Leave Home

Probably a lot more that I can't remember!

Eno - Before and After Science
