where do they come from?
Where are most of them made?

Everything you ever wanted to know about drumsticks but were afraid to ask.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 22 March 2004 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, since you asked...they're made of either hickory or maple, but hickory is the most common. They come from, you know, drumstick companies. I think the big ones (Vic Firth and Zildjian) have their factories in the States.

(x-post)

Are you planning a hostile takover of the drumstick industry btw?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 22 March 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

'Cause I don't want to be using no Microsoft drum sticks or nothing like that.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 22 March 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I've played with fiberglass sticks once. I stole 'em from this metal dude.

x-post ha ha Vic Firth v2.0

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 22 March 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a pair of Lars Ulrich fiberglass sticks about nine years ago. I cracked a cymbal with them so I threw them away.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 22 March 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

you showed that metallica fucker!

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 22 March 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

(insert own joke here about downloading lars ulrich fiberglass sticks, making digital copies, and distributing them for free via kazaa.)

There were also those aluminum sticks at least for a while, I dunno if they still make them. They were the kind of thing drummers with fingerless gloves used (you know the guys that wear black tank tops, twirl their sticks and then smash a cymbol). And I've seen them made out of oak and more rare woods like mahogany, but yeah usually hickory and maple. I like maple sticks. They're tastier.

I always used solid stone mallets, what are you kids talking about.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't get cheap sticks. It's just not worth it. Twice I've bought a pair, only to have one break within an hour of playing.

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The funny thing is, even though this is ILM, I totally saw the thread title and thought, "Oooh, chicken!"

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 07:24 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I thought "oooh I could go for some ice cream", and I'm a drummer!

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I always go for nylon tips; wooden ones don't do ride cymbals justice.

Jez (Jez), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Nylon tips fuck up my ride cymbal.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate nylon tips, especially playing jazz. Just a bit too artificial and clicky, and they do mark up the cymbals. I really should get some for playing with the metal band though.

eleven years pass...

RIP Vic Firth.

Ha, was just thinking how relatively few Vic Firth sticks I've broken; Pro Mark and Zildjian sticks lasted 1/3rd as long as Vic's.

RIP

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 27 July 2015 22:23 (ten years ago)

They were my sticks of choice for the best of my drumming years. RIP.

Oh, no doubt. I don't think I've ever used Zildjians, but I've had some twiggy Pro Marks. Vic's take work to break. Usually more from longterm wear and splintering than outright snapping. (Nylon tips more vulnerable than wood ime. But that's what you get for playing with nylon tips.)
