I think the first EP and LP are utterly wonderful in that fierce female-fronted Bad Seeds style of theirs. The new single "Darling" seems to have smoothed out all their edges, I hope the new album doesn't follow in a similar vein.

GREAT GREAT GREAT OH MY GOD I LOVE THEM I LOVE THEM I LOVE THEM
God, a lot can change in three and a half years. Third album further continues the drift away from what was so good about the first album. It's drudgey Long Blondes without the wit/art/sass.

So am I the only one who loves "Gilt Complex"?
― Telephone thing, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 02:00 (eighteen years ago)
I like "Gilt Complex" but am unsold on "Darling". Still buying the album when it hits the states next week based on loving the prior stuff. Wish The Repulsion Box wasn't mastered so hot because I get serious ear fatigue. Hope the new one is a little toned down.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 04:01 (eighteen years ago)
really, really disappointed with the new album.
― stirmonster, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 12:22 (eighteen years ago)
What about it in particular?
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 12:44 (eighteen years ago)
stirry, i was in bordeaux a couple of years ago at a dinner party held by a some new parents - i put on your mix of "dance me in" and the mom was like "oh i love this song!!" and apparently she knew it, and her two-year old daughter started dancing around the room and singing to it!
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 13:02 (eighteen years ago)
I like their earlier material, but find the new, David Copperfield-produced album pretty lame. The thing is, you can hear the energy just beneath the surface, being held back by terribly bland production. Trouble is, I also think EZ Snappin's OTM re: the production of "The Repulsion Box." They need someone else at the controls.
Saw S&D last night in Boston, and the new songs sounded a little better. But still not as good as the old ones. They were great live, and I can't help but think that they'll keep doing very good things.

Listening to This Gift right now for the first time since 2008, surely, and it all seems brand new. I'm sure that speaks to how unmemorable it was, but it actually sounds kind of nice and fun right now. Still not a patch on Love the Cup, but two years on from its release it's nice to go back to. The album's under no pressure to impress me anymore, and it kind of succeeds in that way.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 July 2010 09:19 (fifteen years ago)
Hmmm, maybe I'll revisit it too. It felt like "The Gift" ripped out everything that made "Love The Cup" so great, smoothed out the edges and made them sound like many other indie bands. But the first EP and album were stormers!

Interesting. I like them singing together, but I hope the whole thing isn't that minimal.

can't wait for the new album - def got to catch them live again ... been a wee while

i'll out stirmonster as the producer of this very album. sounds like he has done an amazing job from what i've heard so far. i'm so looking forward to this record.

I outed him in the goth 2011 thread, but might as well do it here too. It sounds nice (though I'm not sure I'm completely into Silver Spell...hopefully there are some more melodic songs elsewhere on the record).
― That's why they call me (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 14 April 2011 20:01 (fourteen years ago)
i love it but i'm sure there are!
― jed_, Thursday, 14 April 2011 20:34 (fourteen years ago)
outed! :-)
there's one other perhaps similarly stark song but the rest of the album is chock full of melody. still lots of guitars too so they have definitely not been morphed into a synth band.
― stirmonster, Friday, 15 April 2011 01:23 (fourteen years ago)
i love the minimalism of Silver Spell, really makes the dual vocals stick out, reminded me a little bit of The Knife

I love this record. Ink Free's the one I'm hammering at the moment
