Okay, theres this one sample of a crowd I can't quite describe, but it's pretty lo-fi, and is just kind of chattering and laughing. It's featured prominently in "Merrily We Roll Along" by Datach'i, and somewhere in "Maple Leafs" by Jens Lekman (I think it's that track), on the very end of "Return of The Gangster" by Outkast, and other places (I think I heard Belle and Sebastian used it too, but don't know).
Either way, what the hell is this sample that has been used so prominently, especially for something that's a just a field recording.
― mehlt, Friday, 23 November 2007 03:05 (eighteen years ago)
I listened to those tunes, and it's definitely the same sample. My guess is that, since it's been used by such different artists, it's not a field recording rather than a sample of some well-known tune with crowd noises, like "The 'In' Crowd" or "What's Going On" or Donny Hathaway's "The Ghetto". Damn if I know which one, though.
― Tuomas, Friday, 23 November 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)
What's the origin of the "Step up...Step-- Step up..Step up" from "Step in the Arena"/"I Get Around"

Thunder & Lightning: "Bumpin' Bus Stop"
― Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 02:53 (seventeen years ago)
Ha, I always figured it came from a (then) contemporary rap song of some sort. Thanks!
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 03:09 (seventeen years ago)
The crowd noise sample Mehlt mentions upthread is still bugging me. I assume it must be from some well-known record, since it's used by such different artists as Outkast and Jens Lekman. Any guesses?
― Tuomas, Monday, 30 March 2009 10:27 (seventeen years ago)
Does anyone know what song this Finnish rap tune samples? Sounds like some old soul tune, but I don't recognize it...

love & elecktrik - sex video
im sure the opening plinky plonky melody is lifted from some other song, possibly an 80s disco or freestyle track. the song is here: http://winniecooper.net/2009/07/love-elektrik/ and the specific part i mean is at 4 seconds in. it's driving me crazy!
― NI, Friday, 24 July 2009 13:00 (sixteen years ago)
ok ignore that, im pretty sure its from kraftwerk's 'computer love'

hot song. almost bought a copy on saturday but it was too scratchy.
― dmr, Monday, 17 August 2009 16:27 (sixteen years ago)
This one should be easy but I've spent years searching to no avail: the chorus of Public Enemy's "Fight the Power", it sounds like there's a female voice repeating "hug and kiss" or something along those lines. Who is it and where is it from?
― Udon Nomi (Stevie D), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 06:10 (sixteen years ago)
Good question. Always wondered that myself. Maybe it's a sped-up sample making identification difficult.
― Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 07:07 (sixteen years ago)
It's not one of these?
― naus, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 08:36 (sixteen years ago)
Not hat I could tell. Those are the same samples listed on wiki. Stevie, just speed up every one of those and see which one may be it. :)
― Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 08:46 (sixteen years ago)
I already went through every one of those.
― Udon Nomi (Stevie D), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 12:39 (sixteen years ago)

Cool, thanks everyone!
Never heard of that The Jets track before - it's great! I guess I must have heard the sample in some DJ mix under the Alan Braxe guise but was then when I came across it in that 1991 Coldcut-Meets-The Orb mix was thrown.
Ctazy how just 5 seconds lifted totally makes something new.
― De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 09:51 (fifteen years ago)
Crazy how just 5 seconds lifted totally makes something new.
^ sounds naive esp. from someone who spent a looooong time sample checking DJ Shadow entroducing
― De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 09:52 (fifteen years ago)
Isn't sample actually lifted from this one:

― Moka, Wednesday, 23 June 2010 05:57 (fifteen years ago)
I mean yes I get that's maybe a hyperbolic comment since this song is built on the Jets one... but even the 'rap' intro is lifted from that one.
― Moka, Wednesday, 23 June 2010 06:00 (fifteen years ago)
That Jets sample was used at one point on 2ManyDJ's As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt. 2.

― meisenfek, Thursday, 16 September 2010 22:39 (fifteen years ago)
Really?! I'm definitely thinking 70s Chi-Lites/Sylistics kinda vibe, and I don't think it's digging too deep in the crates. Like something I would have heard on Top 40 radio all the time back then. Even though Coolbone were never really popular, Guru did this remix and I think it's weird that there's no sample info online.
― Overblown 80's Gated Snore (Dan Peterson), Friday, 17 September 2010 16:08 (fifteen years ago)
Can you ID the guitar sample in this tune, it starts at 0:22.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ImAJjK83uc
It sounds really familiar, I think it's from an intro of some 80s TV series, but I can't recall which one.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 08:34 (fourteen years ago)
Anyone?
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 09:07 (fourteen years ago)
Reminds me of a cross between "Silver Fang" and "Baywatch" but it's neither one of them... definitely think I've heard it before but not sure where... either sampled by someone else or as a sort of coda from some 80s song in my collection... I'll see if i can find it before anyone else does.
― Moka, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 09:52 (fourteen years ago)
Baywatch was the first thing I thought too, but I listened through a few versions of its intro and couldn't find that exact riff. Maybe it played during the end titles, though?
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 10:33 (fourteen years ago)
parts of the guitar part are vv similar to parts from Cindy Lauper's Time After Time, imho

What IS this string/piano sample? I know it's something I've heard, but it's driving me crazy not being able to place it.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 02:21 (twelve years ago)
Ok I've finally identified the sample above, in case anyone wants to know It was also used by Shirley Bassey in the song Jezahel (a cover from the italian 'Jesahel') and it was sampled by Public Enemy.
― Moka, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 07:15 (twelve years ago)
Reverse ID this sample. I know a dance track has used the 4 bar vocal at 3:04 on Deee-Lite’s good beat, but it has been bugging me all day that I can’t remember.

This has been bugging me for a while... I know there's a tune by Queen Latifah (I think) that uses the same piano sample as heard on this track at 1:09... But what is that tune? And where is the sample originally from? I've heard the original tune a few times, and I think it's something incredibly obvious, but I just can't get it into my head.

damn, i am loving the album (Jun Ray Song Chang, by Asa-Chang & JunRay). "Hana" i somehow know very well from before, as i mentioned upthread. but i've never listened to the rest! "Jippun", in particular, reminds me (INCREDIBLY FONDLY) of hosono's Cochin Moon (and on that, "upper floor" but also other parts) as well warp stuff of that era

This is driving me nuts because the sample sounds overtly obvious - the mid-range synth pattern and dubby pads, you can hear them more clearly from 2:08 on - and I know I know it, but currently don't, and am trying to fend of "is this cognitive decline???" anxiety, so I will be grateful if anyone can point it out. My hunch is saying something mid-90s detroit (plus 8? carl craig?) or else 90s UK.
