apropos amateurist's comment on the rare release thread:

why did i read this thread title as "what is the rarest opinion you actually possess?"

now that would be a thread

huh?

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

That Wide Boy Awake were 50 years ahead of their time and that Chubby Checker recorded the finest song of the last 35 years. Wait, that's two opinions. Well, just read one of them. Take your pick.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

That the Supernaturals are not unmitigated shite. I think it's just me and Geir on that one.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Siamese Dream >>> Loveless. BIG time.

Rare in that I don't even think Ned shares that one.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

For a band to become canonical is totally depending on the quality of those that are inspired by said band.

Roger in Mokum (Roger T), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

That Roger should be committed to Bellevue for ever connecting the smashing pumpkins with MBV in any way. okay, that's my 3rd opinion but i'm sticking with this one.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

That Paula Cole's Amen. was one of the three best albums of 1999.

Joseph McCombs, Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

that tweets 2002 southern hummingbird album is way too underated.

silvohn clinton, Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

that my balls are itchy

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

That Primus were purely pop and were one of the most extraordinary phenomenons of the 90s.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Rare in that I don't even think Ned shares that one.

You are correct.

That Roger should be committed to Bellevue for ever connecting the smashing pumpkins with MBV in any way. okay, that's my 3rd opinion but i'm
sticking with this one.

Corgan's always admitted he's ripping off the MBV guitar sound! You couldn't NOT connect the two! (Not that Shields cares much, I'd guess.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

that tweets 2002 southern hummingbird album is way too underated.

I dunno anyone who didn't like that album

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

That 'Showgirls', T&A aside, actually is a pretty interesting film, continuing Verhoevens study of surface as a human phenomenon.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

not music, i know, but hey ...

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron A., Tuesday, 23 March 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The song/video combination of the Pet Shop Boys "Go West" is the finest encapsulation of the whole of 20th Century history ever!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I might not disagree with you there, so that might not be rare.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ABBA are the Beatles of music.

Roger in Mokum (Roger T), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Look, man, i ain't gettin' into this with you all again!! :)

BUT...if talent indeed borrows and genius indeed steals, Corgan is genius to have stolen his ideas from the tremendous talents of Shields and improved upon them.

I mean, come on - song wise, you'd rather listen to friggin' "Only Shallow" than "Mayonnaise"??? I'm sorry I can't accept that.

Picture both songs as piano rolls for a player paino - which one is better now? Which one would you rather hear Sufjan Stevens cover?

Exactly.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i would pay huge money to hear "only shallow" on a player piano

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

that ties into my idea of doing "no more sorry" with a string quartet

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought he just stole all his ideas from old Boston records.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Not as rare as unpopular (so I just discovered), but: Princess Superstar is equally as talented & entertaining as Lil Kim & Trina.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

- that Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk is a deeply flawed album
- that the production on ...And Justice For All is the best possible sound for the material
- that Modern Talking is the most hilarious and entertaining musical act of the last twenty years (no wait, I might not be alone on this one)

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

- "On" by Echobelly is one of the ten best albums of the '90s
- the Strokes = the Knack and will suffer a similar fate
- Paul W. Anderson (Event Horizon, Resident Evil) > Paul T. Anderson
- Ride's "Nowhere" 100x better than "Loveless"

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

That Eleanor of the Fiery Furnaces and I were separated at birth.

Thea (Thea), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

D Mowen (dc23412), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

amnesiac is the best radiohead cd

Hey, I clicked on this thread *expressly* to post that!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Which one would you rather hear Sufjan Stevens cover?

Uh, neither?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I know many of you fogies prefer Sinatra's September of My Years or Duke Ellington's At Newport, but Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the greatest rock'n'roll album ever recorded (or that ever will be recorded.)

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete Rock is the Kate Bush of hip-hop

Nik (Nik), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Sgt Pepper's sucks ass

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

that's not a rare opinion

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that Sufjan Stevens' ability to cover a song well is a ridiculous criterion in this debate, but I actually like Siamese Dream better than Loveless, myself.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Surface - I was simply refuting Mark (see above)

Jaymc, Ned - OK, OK, all I was trying to do was think of a reputable singer-songwriter that everyone seems to like who'd play it straight, thereby allowing the 'tune' to emerge - feel free to substitute Sufjan with Jackson Brown if you prefer

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I think incest (though not between children and adults, mind you) should be legal*. That's probably not all that rare an opinion, though.

*this does not reflect my feelings towards family members. I am fairly normal sexually, whatever that means. I just think it should be allowed if that's what people want to do.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Black Sabbath -- early Black Sabbath -- doesn't sound heavy.

At least as much as everytone makes them out to be.

(I've tried to find several excuses to start buying their albums from first to, oh, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath at least -- but could never get moved enough by the records.. I'm not denying their blistering influence on almost all hard rock, certainly, but I think they're one of those bands who I'll end up appreciating more for their importance than their actual recorded output)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete Rock is the Kate Bush of hip-hop

This is a cultural reference I don't get...what does it mean?

djdee2005, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

it means he sucks, and I pretty much agree. Enough with the fucking horns already, son.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Donut Bitch, the recent reissues of all that may help with yer Sabbath impressions.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Really! In that case....

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Uhhh...have you actually heard a Pete Rock album?

djdee2005, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Sabbath box set details. Presumably individual issues will follow.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh dear fucking jesus, there goes $100 of mine.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Fear of a Black Planet=10.0
Nation of Million=6.3
Yo! Bum Rush the Show=1.0

2. Republic is at least an 8.5, perhaps closer to a 9.0. New Order's third or fourth best.

3. "Molly (16 Candles)" and "Hey Jealousy" are two of the best singles of the 90s.

4. "Sister Ray" by the Velvet Underground is the best dance song of all-time.

Yeah, those will all do pretty well.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh dear fucking jesus, there goes $100 of mine.

I've actually just sold back all my old Sabbath discs in anticipation. (Good thing too, I think those were all masters from 1987 or something.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

... Zappa fan, that is.

Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Wednesday, 21 August 2024 20:13 (one year ago)

I like a lot of his work and spend way too much mental energy & time trying to imagine what An Actually Good Zappa would look like, trying to separate out the Zappa I can't stand from the Zappa I like

definitely the ultimate "but i can fix him" artist

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 21 August 2024 20:13 (one year ago)

they definitely exist but most times when I meet a fan of Zappa we spend most of the time just bitching about him

frogbs, Wednesday, 21 August 2024 20:24 (one year ago)

You must move in peculiar circles if you're bumping into Zappa fans that often.

Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Wednesday, 21 August 2024 20:26 (one year ago)

I DJ prog rock sets lmao

frogbs, Wednesday, 21 August 2024 20:27 (one year ago)

Trying to imagine being willing to admit being a Zappa fan to a stranger in public.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Wednesday, 21 August 2024 20:28 (one year ago)

So would the rarest Zappa opinion (in 2024) be "I only like the gross stuff"? Maybe in the 70s there were fans who felt this way, but connoisseurs of present-day grossness have a cornucopia laid out before them.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 21 August 2024 20:53 (one year ago)

yeah maybe "Zappa is funny" would be a rare opinion. but then again we are a self-selecting group, I'd guess that on "yellow snow" uploads there's dozens of "NOW THAT'S SOME HUMOR...SORRY IT'S NOT 'PC'!!" comments

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Wednesday, 21 August 2024 20:57 (one year ago)

Given up on Zappa ages ago, but along slightly similar lines my favourite Bonzo Dog Band LP is Let's Make Up & Be Friendly, no contest.

This really is as good as it gets, right? It has the most perfect balance between, music, theater, humor and bonkers originality that you only get with Zappa on top form

Thanks to this song "Great Googlymoogly!" and "Right upside the head of my favorite baby seal" and "destined to take the place of the mudshark in your mythology " enttered the lexicon of slang for my friends and I back in middle school in the late 70s. It wasn't just the lyrics though. Lyrics without a good tune are just bad poetry.

This album is insane. Gawd, I've never danced, head-banged, and laughed so much in my days. Goofy, hilarious, much humor, savant-genius, prog, orchestral, bluesy, bipolar rock. I think Frank's brain was too big for his body.

This stuff would never get out of the basement these days. No one takes chances anymore. Thank the great googly moogly for zappa!!!

My rare and genuinely-held opinion: the best song either Paul Simon or Art Garfunkel have ever been involved with is "Bright Eyes".

without rancor or anything, but what do you wish would happen on a music discussion board? just recommendations -- no opinions that gainsay somebody else's pleasant experience? I'm not a hater, I do think finding 1000 ways to say something sucks is boring, but "critical conversation is bad" is weird to me -- when somebody doesn't like something I like, I take pleasure in discussing that thing with them, in seeing the thing I like from different angles and in presenting my own case for it. I don't really understand why we would be on a music discussion board if we didn't begin with the proposition "there's pleasure to be had in discussing music."

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Wednesday, 21 August 2024 23:18 (one year ago)

No I just think if someone says they “hate jazz” there’s really no point to “get them into jazz” and its kind of rude and patronizing actually.

brimstead, Wednesday, 21 August 2024 23:33 (one year ago)

JCLC and Moka otm. Haters are essential. No one should feel safe enjoying music imo. People should look over there shoulders as soon as they press play on Unknown Pleasures. Public morality should not be blasphemed!

H.P, Thursday, 22 August 2024 04:40 (one year ago)

More seriously: the existence of the inner critic presupposes the outer critic. And a respectable human being should respect the outer critic inasmuch as they respect the inner critic. Solipsism is dud in all forms

yeah there are plenty of incredible Beatles covers out there, felt like standard practice until like 1980 to do at least one on your first album at least, oftentimes it was the highlight too

personally I think XTC and TMBG are just as brilliant when it comes to songwriting but I haven't really found a cover of either that I really liked, Beatles songs just feel more flexible I guess

i know, right? i was in the endoscopy waiting room at the hospital waiting for my dad and a surgeon was telling a mother not to have too much sugar in the house for her kid and when they were done telling the mom not to have cereal and juice around a nurse pushed the surgeon playfully into the window where there was a small rooftop garden and she said that she needed to get out there and weed and that she actually really liked to weed and that it was very satisfying and that it cleared the weeds in her mind.
