guitar solos you know by heart

you know, ones where you know every note of the solo as much the actual tune, and can perfectly air guitar the whole thing.

Ozzy Osbourne - "Mama I'm Comin' Home"
Matthew Sweet - "Girlfriend"
Television - "Marquee Moon"
and a lot of Guns'n'Roses, but especially "November Rain" (BOTH solos!) and "Welcome To The Jungle"

(apologies if a thread of this sort has been done already; it's a bit hard to search for)

Shoplifters of the World Unite

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

everything off def leppards hysteria, everything off queen greatest hits one and two, the same two guns n roses songs you mention al, everything off DRFSR by warrant.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Well if it isn't everyone's favorite jetsetting connoisseur of all thing bling and seafood Alphonse Shrimpli.

Archers Of Loaf - Wrong (the good version where it sounds like wailing animal)
Cuban Linx & Angie Martinez - Freak Out
The end part of ARab Strap - Girls Of Summer (Mad For Sadness version)

LC, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 07:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I only started smelling fish when you got here.

LC, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

In Bloom - Nirvana. A very short and sweet solo.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 07:57 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh, good call on "In Bloom". I mean, there's plenty of Nirvana ones etched in my brain but that's the one I actually enjoy remembering. definitely one of my earliest air guitar memories, along with "November Rain".

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

vu - i heard her call my name
santana - the whole of caravanserai

phil turnbull (philT), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 08:09 (twenty-two years ago)

All of 'em, so long as (a) they're good/interesting, (b) under 3 minutes or so, and (c) they're not completely insane, like "Heard Her Call My Name" or anything by Blue Cheer/Mahavishnu/Slayer.

Never played air guitar in my life - no need, since I've owned/played the real thing for years, however badly. And "Marquee Moon" is indeed one of my favourites to play along to, along with "Looking At You" (MC5), "I Want Candy" (Bow Wow Wow) and anything by Bo Diddley.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Too many to list but one of my favourites is "Cherub Rock".

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Three Days - Jane's Addiction. There's a cracking bum note in there too.

mzui, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Scary but true...

"Nothing Else Matters", Metallica.

Epic.

Marx, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Catch by the Cure
You Should All Be Murdered - Another Sunny Day

flowersdie (flowersdie), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Next comic relief evening, someone should hire brentford FC stadium, and we can all go down and air guitar the solo to "Marquee Moon"!!

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Guns'n'Roses: Sweet Child O'Mine (come on, EVERYBODY knows that one!)
Tom Waits: Jockey Full Of Bourbon (beau-tiful)
Clapton: Cocaine (he's cheating, there'soverdubs in there, you know)
Robben Ford: Talk To Your Daughter (I learned it from my guitar teacher in High School)

and many more ...

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I Am The Resurrection - Stone Roses (the original version)

Although I'm more of a 'air bass' person...

daarkbee (daarkbee), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

What Do I Get - Buzzcocks

Jez (Jez), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

On Friday, I had the good fortune to attend what used to be known as an 'indie disco'. Everyone there seemed to know the guitar solo which begins "Another Girl Another Planet" rather well.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Kayleigh by Marillion.
Everything I Do (I Do It For You) by Adams.

Not through choice, obviously.

39 Steps + 40 Winks (39 Steps + 40 Winks), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

'Sunshine of Your Love'
'White Room'
'Crossroads'
'Hot For Teacher' - one of the best!
Everything by Jimmy Page

57 7th (calstars), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

All Beatles, I am the Resurrection, and Hotel California. Oh, and anything off The Wall. COmfortbaly Numb still has the best sounding guitar solo evah, as opposed to flashy or inventive.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ramones- Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue
Ramones- I Wanna Be Sedated

Franco D. Wanko, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

James Brown - Ain't It Funky (live)
most Metallica
a few of the solos on John Scofield's A Go Go
Gn'R - Sweet Child O' Mine

A bunch more I'm sure, I probably could sing a lot more horn solos though.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The first (and only) one that leaps to mind is James Honeyman-Scott's tear on the Pretenders' "Tattooed Love Boys."

Lee G (Lee G), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and Fripp on Eno's "Baby's on Fire." That bit where he lets the feedback loose for a sec gives me the chills every time.

Lee G (Lee G), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry to get all indie on a guitar solo thread but Yo La Tengo- Pablo and Andrea

Mitchell (Mitchell), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Kornél Kovács (Kornél Kovács), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

oh my god I love you all, I'm sitting in my silent office and half of the songs mentioned above are popping into my head and I'm just mentally running through all the solos, only the solos, and it's beautiful.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Most all Van Halen solos, except for those on the Gary Cherone album ('cos I haven't heard it in 6 years).
Everything on Appetite for Destruction.
Select Dokken and Ratt tunes, because I worshipped George Lynch and Warren DiMartini in my youth.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurricane #1 - "Step Into My World" (Andy Bell is criminally underused as a bassist now)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Sweet Child O'Mine

At some point, the Luna version usurped G'n'R as the one that comes into my mind first when I think of this solo...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Living Colour - "Cult of Personality"
Eno - "Golden Hours"
Springsteen - "Born to Run" (surfarific!)
Crowded House - "Sister Madly" (Richard Thompson!)

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, this too! "Digital Love" 's has to be THE last great (i.e. memorable) guitar solo on record I've heard.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The live half of Still by Joy Division.

Jesus & Mary Chain - "April Skies"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Shoplifters of the World Unite

Oh my god. That solo makes me LAUGH. It's, like, the most ridiculous Tom Scholz-sounding hamfisted wankery. Was it intended as a joke?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

velvet underground - "sister ray" (just kidding?)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I can "sing" all the guitar parts in "Cowgirl in the Sand."

clemenza, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 02:11 (fifteen years ago)

The 3-part solo in Pink Floyd "Money." Listening in the car one day, the solo was just starting as I entered the Lincoln Tunnel, so I sang the entire solo out loud in the silent car. When I came out of the tunnel and the radio faded back in, my timing was only off by one note.

Hideous Lump, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 02:11 (fifteen years ago)

Pretenders - Kid
Roxy Music - Out of the Blue

dorkslovesudoku (some dude), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 02:21 (fifteen years ago)

i think i can anticipate/could mouth along with most of high rise "live", like while i'm listening to it, but i hit blanks when i try to string it together otherwise--but i mean that album's like 75% solos or something. and as for actually playing them ahahahahahhaah no.

arby's, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 02:27 (fifteen years ago)

Queen - Don't Stop Me Now (the first record I bought, I think)
Black Sabbath - Paranoid (the non-ring-modulated part in the left channel, anyhow)
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (weirdly constipated/rigid solo, actually less dynamic than the riff it's over)
Michael Jackson - Beat It (me and another few million people, right?)

superflyguy, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)
