Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz

Has anyone actually heard any of the shows they've put out on cd? I can't speak for her playing, but judging from the guests some of them must be fascinating - Alice Coltrane, Bill Evans, apparently a new reissue with Mary Lou Williams, etc. When musicians are interviewed by musicians, it tends to be good.

Who now?

These shows have been broadcast on public radio for about a hundred years now, and they're typically great. Didn't know about them being issued on CD, though.

Note how each piano (during duets) sticks to it's own speaker so you can differentiate betwixt the players.

Aristocratic New England accents: C/D?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

She did a show with Willie Nelson about a year ago that was pretty great.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I've seen her interviewed on tv and I love the idea of this stately old British woman who can throw down on some Giant Steps.

(wait, New England? I thought it was, you know, Old England)

I haven't heard any of the discs, but listened to the broadcasts for years. They were always at least interesting, and could be fascinating, depending on the guest. Marian's playing was invariably intelligent and playful, and she brought out some wonderful things from the guests -- fun to hear the dialogue between two pianos. The Bill Evans one I remember as being particulary exciting.

Yeah, she is from Old England. But she's been in America for so long, she has that peculiar accent that's similar to an aristocratic New Englander to me. (I have a friend who moved to the U.S. from Manchester when she was 9. Lots of people upon first meeting her think she's pretentious, until they realize it's just a vestigial British accent that sometimes sneaks into her voice.)

I've been listening to Piano Jazz on and off for probably 20 years. So much great stuff in her archives. I loved her conversation as much as her playing. And she was this amazing living link to the earliest days of jazz.

RIP. Those shows are so great. Bill Evans one is far and away the best interview I've ever heard with him.

Yeah, the Bill Evans one is great. Link here: http://www.npr.org/2010/10/08/92185496/bill-evans-on-piano-jazz.

wow is that right? crazy.
can't have been easy to have been a woman (much less an English woman?) in that scene, but she seems to have been loved by everyone. you can tell on her show that even the most prickly musicians (say, keith jarrett) have a deep respect.

RIP...
I wish MS Public Radio had aired her show. I haven't heard it since my Redding days. I remember a fantastic Max Roach episode... was she still recording new shows this past year?
