Madvillainy. There are bits and pieces from other threads, but now that this is officially out, let's talk!

I love it. I don't know if Doom will ever top Viktor Vaughn for me, but this is just great. I thought the Kanye West album was mighty fine til I heard this...
(and no, there's not enough space in my heart for more than one hip hop love at a time). Thoughts?

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Is R Kelly on it?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

these threads are tedious alright.
Hi! I like MF Doom! Hi! Is it released yet? Hey! I'm eating beans!

Use a chatroom...

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

He does a verse where he begins: after party, hotel lobby, cristal, popping, menage, hot tub, 6am

then, sadly, he drowns after drinking a mouthful of piss and dies. and it's not even the best part of the record!

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Australasians strike back!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

heh heh. grubber, you were really a bit annoyed by that post, huh? it's ok, i won't go near you, and you can keep away from discussions about music. deal?

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

awwww

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah grubber, what do you know about music anyway?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

look, the only reason i wrote that was because...imagine how fun ilx will be if we all partition into regional/cultural groups and talk about the little things. not fun. but i also recognise that you NZ/Aust people have had your thing for a while, and so I should just ignore it. I just don't want competing threads about how "North Carolina is the Best Place in the World!" Ignore me, I'm grumpy today.

But back to Madvillainy.

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay.

So is Lil Kim on it?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i was just playing paul. but really...not everyone is interested in madvillain, right?

x-post...wtf?? lil kim is on it???

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm listening to it as we speak (are we speaking?). i like it better than i thought i was gonna. i was really hoping for more MF beats, but madlib is a cameleon. he picked up jay dee's style for madlib and is totally copping MF's style on this one.

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree JaXoN. at first listen i thought i wanted something 1. longer, 2. a bit darker/less lounge-ish in sample use, but now i think i'm sold. in the same way it took me a few listens to get 'Operation Doomsday'.

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

great album, not as good as Vaudeville Villain, that's true, but it's a solid collabo overall. there is some filler, which is kind of surprising considering how short it is, but there are at least a half-dozen songs (Meat Grinder, Figaro, All Caps, Rhinestone Cowboy, etc.) where Madlib and Doom just sync up perfectly and it's just sick.

oh yeah, and North Carolina Really Is The Best Place In The World!

"Madvillainy, one of the most anticipated releases in underground rap history"

Give me a break.

ppp, Thursday, 25 March 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Name another underground release more anticipated by heads this year. Or in the last four years. Go ahead.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Thursday, 25 March 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Rap wise, naturally.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Thursday, 25 March 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

you should always rap wise! and naturally

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

this is the weakest thing i have ever heard.

tOph, Thursday, 25 March 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

weak in what sense? like rollie says, for a lot of hip hop fans, this is the freshest thing to be heard for a long, long time...well, since the last doom record.

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 25 March 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Um I don't know how anyone can say Vaudeville Villian was better than this - and I LOVED Vaudeville Villian - but this takes that album and shits all over it. The production is ten times as good, for one thing. And for another...just read rollie's review.

djdee2005, Thursday, 25 March 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a real hard time with it at first because it seemed so mild; there was none of the rapid fire genius I had come to expect from Doom. It was too mellow. It seemed like Doom-lite, and the beats felt like watered down, jazzy, Doom knock-offs.

But it has really grown on me, and I think it works in a totally different way than say Vik Vaughn or Doomsday. This is sort of like late night doom--it IS more mellow, less hyper, but the rhymes work surprising well in that conext, and some of the tracks are just brilliant, especially ALLCAPS and Raid.

And I am going to have to agree with Rollie that this one was one of the most hotly anticipated in a long while. Two of the biggest names in underground rap, combined with the endless delays and rumors, definitely had people licking their chops.

Scott, Thursday, 25 March 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

are the beats on this record really sloppy-sounding, with barely audible drums? maybe what i heard was a low-quality promo leak or something. also, could someone explain why mf doom is a good emcee?

t0ph, Thursday, 25 March 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

He is ridiculously clever, has a very unique personality, and sounds like no one else in hip-hop. Plus I just think he sounds good.

djdee2005, Thursday, 25 March 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

he's got a cool voice. his puns and ideas have you scratching your head a grinning, but then, he's a little dark too. he's just got so much charisma, and his lazy-not-quite-there drawl just adds to it.

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 25 March 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

djdee2005, Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The quotes are far from the nicest on the album. In fact, most of them aren't very good. But they worked out well for separating sections.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Rollie.

Nick Sylvester, Friday, 26 March 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

"Name another underground release more anticipated by heads this year. Or in the last four years. Go ahead."

Contrast that with the original phrase in question:

"Madvillainy, one of the most anticipated releases in underground rap history"

Which is it?

ppp, Friday, 26 March 2004 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

nitpick much?

Obviously he may be embellishing but its not that fucking ridiculous to claim that this was a highly anticipated album. In fact, he's not embellishing; it is ONE, that's ONE of the most anticipated releases in underground hip-hop history.

People are fucking nitpicking bitches sometimes.

djdee2005, Friday, 26 March 2004 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

HEY NICK, WHAT'S REALLY GOOD

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Friday, 26 March 2004 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
So, I finally got round to hearing this. I really expected this to somehow change my mind about undie rap and suchlike, but it is just really unremarkable. So monotonous and somehow vanilla for what is being touted as something of a leftfield triumph. And that voice!

I am curious, though - people that like this, what exactly do you hear in it that I don't?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Madlib’s production is a perfect accompaniment to DOOM’s husky flow; loose, freewheeling montages, wurlitzers and flutes, organs and pianos, cymbals dancing on and off the beat. From the accordion that opens the first proper song to the subdued horn blasts that close the album as Madvillain rides into the sunset on “Rhinestone Cowboy,” it’s a sonically rich adventure, rich in sonic invention and interpretation. Listen to the chord changes in “Great Day Today” as the wurlitzer flows around DOOM’s baritone. Or the organ that opens “Figaro” before it lands its handclapped beat, a bass-heavy, driving groove punctuated by jangling tambourines and gentle horn emphasis. And of course the flute hook for “All Caps,” which worms its way into your brain. But by far the most beautiful production struck me on “Fancy Clown.” A vocal sample accompanies the mournful piano as Viktor Vaughn’s tale of love lost pulls at my heartstrings. The piano, vocals, and the melody recall the feeling of every girl I’ve ever loved and lost; the samples are chopped into pieces during the verses, only to come together for one moment of heartfelt regret.

Thats what I wrote about it when I first heard it. On some internerd critique shit.

djdee2005, Friday, 30 April 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

See, I'm missing the "sonically rich and inventive" and "freewheeling" parts, I think. It could be a single note played repeatedly for an hour and a half for how little it grabs my attention.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

but how much did you anticipate it adam?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

about as much as I am anticipating my next colonoscopy.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps I am just not a "head".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I 'anticipate' there will be about 15 people checking out mfdoom at coachella this weekend. he's up against radiohead.

but im sure his 15 will dwarf the 5 people at phantom planet.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

See, I'm missing the "sonically rich and inventive" and "freewheeling" parts, I think. It could be a single note played repeatedly for an hour and a half for how little it grabs my attention.

Where is this part of the album? I must have missed it.

djdee2005, Friday, 30 April 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I finally heard it like two days ago. It's one of the first "throwback"y hip-hop albums recently that I've actually dug. I can't exactly place why though. It's not as inventive as I was expecting, but this is a good thing. I foresee myself listening to it a lot over the summer.

djdee2005, Friday, 30 April 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked the SFJ piece okay, but I still didn't like the record.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It's "joyous", you say?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's something that surprised me. I really expected it to be dark/harsh for some reason.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 April 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree w/ Paul that is still reductive.

But I don't think its fair to suggest that Madvillian's impact is being overrated cuz of a poor underground hip-hop climate. On its own, it is my favorite album of the year, and I've listened to it more than any other release (Although Ghostface is in competition). I think its an amazing accomplishment period.

djdee2005, Saturday, 1 May 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick Sylvester wrote the 'Fancy Clown' thing, but I completely agreed with him. And the Dr. Dooom thing is just an intro and not a full song, so I'd say the point is still kosher.

So far, Madvillain's the top album of the year. And being someone who listens to a lot of boring underground rap releases, I'd say it's more attributed to the album's own merits. I find that most future classics transcend the year they come out in. When I listen to Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, it doesn't feel like a mid-90s album, it just exists as its own entity.

Adam, there's nothing wrong with not liking Doom. Considering the music you like, I don't think you strike me as someone big on subtlety or the technical elements of rap. this also explains why the nerdier heads are frothing over the record, while the more trad-rap heads are still spinning the instrumental to "It's All Real" by Pitch Black. I appreciate shit like changing a rhyme scheme mid-couplet or really intricate rhyme schemes. I dunno, it's all personal preference.

Ghostface disappointed me, djdee. I'm Tony Starks superfan over here, but it didn't really kill me. A lot better than BW, not in the same room as SC, better than a lot of things, might barely make it into my year-end top ten. An album with songs like "It's Over", "Love", "Ghostface" and "Tooken Back" doesn't quite deserve the hype it's getting.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Saturday, 1 May 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"Adam, there's nothing wrong with not liking Doom."

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 1 May 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"It's Over", "Love", "Ghostface" and "Tooken Back"

I think those songs are great! ESPECIALLY "Tooken Back". If there's on weak track its "Ghostface" and that's just cuz the beat doesn't quite fit in and there's not as much memorable about it.

Alex in SF keeps a watchful eye on the hip-hop heads.

djdee2005, Saturday, 1 May 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree w/ Paul that is still reductive.

No shit! Like I said it's just one way to CHARACTERIZE the music, not DEFINE it.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 1 May 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess...and it's not worth going into too deeply (er, I should "lighten up huh?), but if you're using it as an analogy, there are better words to characterize the two styles (how bout...shiny vs dusty?). Whereas coke and weed suggest ways of better understanding or responding to the music.

maybe leave it there. it's funny, i think madvillain is a bit lacking compared to Vik Vaughn, and I even prefer BPW over Pretty Toney. I think I'm going through a bit of a malaise in hip hop appreciation.

I am listening to All Natural a lot though...anyone heard 'em? Funnily, they're kind of conventional underground hip hop.

OCP (OCP), Monday, 3 May 2004 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

DJDee OTM about "Tooken Back" - I bout flipped when I saw Rollie call that one out, gotta be one of the best songs on the whole album, perfect sample and just a really inventive back-and-forth storyline.

Was fucking around with my own top 10 list tonight while bored at work and I stuck Pretty Toney at #1 - kinda liked the looks of it, to be honest, I seriously can't stop listening to this album, though granted I have felt the same way earlier in the year about Madvillain and Kanye.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Monday, 3 May 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't quite figure out why i liked this more in its truncated, bleeping, copy-protected vocoder voiced version more than what actually came out. (which i decided i don't like at all.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 3 May 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i've yet to hear a rap album this year i really want to play after about a month or less.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 3 May 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

After having listened to it with no distractions and via headphones, I've got to say it is quite a bit more adventurous than I noticed on previous listens. The overall mix I think is the most creative thing about it; it sounds equally ancient and futuristic at all times. It's really odd that, even where some tracks have barely-more-than-a-whisper vocals WAY up front in the mix with the drums all the way at the bottom, it still has a nice heavy pulse/propultion to it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw a Madvillain video tonight and liked it. (It was animated, which I often like in music videos.) I liked the music--I think it was using a jazzy sample in a way that worked for me. But I'm really afraid if I bought a whole CD I would be bored. Some of the CD audio snippets I listened to didn't seem too promising.

Are these guys from New Zealand or something or did I misunderstand the start of the thread? (I haven't read the whole thing.)

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 1 July 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I've read most of the reviews on this disc. I bought it. I like it. I've now read this thread. But I don't understand what's so cutting-edge and unique about this disc.

Maybe I don't listen to enough rap or underground rap or commerical hip-hop to figure it out myself (and yes, maybe I'm just dumb).

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 7 March 2008 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

this is definitely one of my top three rap rekkids of the decade. i like doom and madlib a helluva lot and they both do their best work or close to on this record. i can't imagine it ever not sounding fresh.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 7 March 2008 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

has doom put anything out recently? he released like 5 albums in a year but since then...

mmm...food got reissued, but nothign else since dangerdoom i don't think

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 7 March 2008 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't listened to madvillainy in a couple years but I used to listen to it a hell of a lot. I think one's perception of it probably depends on how much doom you've heard--his thing is enjoyable but pretty limited (between this and VV I'm pretty done with him). Madlib is the star here. The tracks are so deep and immersive; this is easily one of my favorite headphones records ever.

there's a few good tracks. the skits are sooo bad. I gues it's weird of me to write off Doom because of that record since his lyrics aren't really the main problem I had with it ... but I didn't really like MM Food either though.

Drugs A. Money, Friday, 7 March 2008 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

DangerDoom is kind of weird because it sounds great on first listen then successively less and less defensible with each spin.

The Reverend, Saturday, 8 March 2008 00:42 (eighteen years ago)

i actually think MF Doom's lyrics are almost better on DangerDoom than Madvillainy, but...the trippy way Doom can build pure mood out of random snippets & phrases, purely by cadence and rhyme, along with Madlib's stream-of-consciousness beats, makes it by far my favorite album of the decade...Danger Doom makess too much literal sense for its own good.
