Totally blown away by this, it doesn't even sound old to me. from 13 minutes to about 35 is insanely good!

agreed. ronan, that was something i picked up years ago, when i had no idea what the label was, and loved it. and only now have i bought smallville (partly inspired by your smallville thread). so thanks!

Is this the Michael Mayer one? I've started seeing it around again and have contemplated paying absurd prices to pick it up. Worth it?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so far behind on all this stuff, I hardly deserve thanks!

Catching up with broadband now but I'm still struggling to find the words to talk about it, as you can see.

(I think it's worth it yeah, I mean I've downloaded so much stuff in the last week since getting hooked up but I've listened to this the most, it's not amazing the entire way through and it is maybe slightly too long but those 20 minutes for me are as good as it gets with this sort of thing)

I think the deep house or even Mr Fingers connection is a bit more pronounced on this than on some of the later stuff which sounds more German I guess.

I know it has two consecutive mixes of Herbert's "Going Round" on it. Is that the part you mean?

Maybe it was Andy who said something about Mayer at this stage not having the raw materials (ie. tracks) at hand to create his signature sound so maybe that's why it splits between deep house and abstract minimal tech.

Certainly the contemporaneous "Koln Kompakt 1" (the first Kompakt comp but of other pre-Kompakt labels) is mostly clanking Studio 1-style Cologne minimalism. But that proto-Dettinger track - wow!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I have it as continuous mix and haven't listened while reading a tracklist yet but I'll do so in the next few days. (got that sami koivikko eucalyptus mix aswell, haven't played it too much yet though)

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a pretty good one I downloaded it first then purchased it. (confounding most peoples expectations of downloaders)

Still sounds a little raw compared to immer but definatly worth the purchase.

I like the voight track and of course the forever sweet. It would be cool to get a copy of that album.

I just found this too, and it is really good. Definitely sounds a bit old, though, in a really interesting way. It's big and meaty techno, but all the latter-day Kompakt elements are smaller and rawer: steam-machine hiss from a corner cleaners rather than an industrial bunker, texture sketches done with pencil rather than spray paint. It sounds like all those guys heard the music they wanted in their heads but hadn't quite figured out how to make it yet.
