How often do you listen to your must have new CD before letting it become a magnet for dust, pizza and red wine?

I ask because most new Cd's I acquire I probably listen to no more than 5-10 times (if I'm lucky. The few I've listened to most I may have heard 20 or 25 times.

Makes me wonder if it's worthwhile buying new material, as I have such a backlog of stuff I could really pay attention to if I wanted to.

Well.... they never fully make the transition to dust magnet. Since I'm always walking/driving with my music, CDs are a must to own. And backcatalogue is very important here.

Stuff I never listen to now will, for some reason, become desireable shortly enough. For instance, I decided to listen to my Oakland gangsta pimp rap and cutesy rainbow jpop records side by side just to sigh over the past times in my life when I took them so seriously. I'll get sick of like.... the Avalanches or Prefuse 73 in some years maybe, but in a decade I'll figure some reason to pop them back in.

Some I come back to over the years. I have vinyl I bought in high school that still gets played (I'm 44), although this may only be once a year or less. Some CDs get played only once, but these are usually things I find cheap (<$5). I don't sell them because I figure something I paid $5 for probably would only get a buck at a store, and I may go back to it at some later date and like it more. If I play something 10 times it means I like it enough to want to keep it, even though I may not think of it for months.

I couple of weeks back I decided not to buy much for a couple of months. This was mainly due to a whole lot of expenses coming up at once (TV Licence, Car Service, Wife's Birthday, Water Rates, and a load of stuff which still needs doing on the house - a word of caution - don't buy a wreck and do it up yourself unless you have unlimited supplies of money, time and patience!). Anyway to get to the point, while I haven't adhered to it strictly, I HAVE dramatically cut down my record-spend, and it's meant that I have had to go through the collection to get new thrills. It's certainly been fun - 'new' favourites include Scritti Politti, Colourbox, Japan and I've finally had time to do justice to several box-sets which have been waiting for the attention they deserve. I reckon in future I might do this again, although I am looking forward to a good splurge- out when I get paid next month.
