If I never hear "The Drugs Don't work" / "Bittersweet Symphony" again the rest of my life, ....

Both I loved at the time, but overplaying has reduced me to boredom.

And now I hear The Verve are putting a greatest hits out.

I 'banned' Come on Eileen at our wedding, as I'd got well bored of it. (The DJ must have thought I had a past gf called eileen, as he looked like it was the highlight of his set). But now, after not hearing it for eight years, I can enjoy it again..

So,

1). Are you with me re the verve?
2). What other records you like loads, but never want/need to hear again? (with an intensity)

Get the obvious ones out of the way quickly:

Groove is in the heart, Hey Ya!

Surely if people wanted a Verve greatest hits, they'd buy "Urban hymns", 'cos that's got their hit singles on it. Someone who adored "Bittersweet symphony" isn't really going to want "She's a superstar" or "Gravity grave", are they?

conversely, I'd like to hear GG and SAS, but would click forward through all Urban Hymns tracks...

1) yes, and in fact the only reason i defend 'Sonnet' as much as i do is because i never actually listen to it

2) ANY big British pop/rock hit I liked at the time (except the Pulp ones)

For me, "The drugs don't work" was spoiled by my mate Paul K telling me before I'd heard it that it sounded like Neil Diamond, and from then on it was totally spoiled for me. Not that it was that good anyway. I would happily never hear any of the singles from "Urban hymns" ever again - being forced to listen to commercial radio in the late 90s playing wall to wall late Britpop put me off a lot of things for life.

Virgin must have a lot of faith in Dickie Ashcroft's new music to issue a hits compilation.

"BSS" I still think is a good piece of music, "TDDW" is shite though, as is the rest of the album. I'd be interested to see how they did a greatest hits.

I could hear "Groove Is In The Heart" everyday and be fine about it. "Hey Ya" has become somewhat irritating, though.

"This Is Music" randomly popped in my head the other day so, uh, I could stand to hear that one again. I'm with you on those other two songs though. Ashcroft's solo career certainly hasn't helped.

Relax & Two Tribes - Frankie goes to Hollywood

They're not bad by any means - but seem more like concepts rather than tunes - you only need to hear them once to grasp the point.

I definitely have several hundred more listens left until "Groove Is In The Heart" becomes annoying. I think it helps that I was too young to remember when it came out.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 25 March 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

hey ya

kinski (kinski), Thursday, 25 March 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

If a day comes where I am tired of "Groove Is In The Heart" or "Hey Ya", I will cry and cry and cry.

Conversely, I don't think I ever need to hear Mary J's "A Family Affair" ever again.
