In the back of Uncut, that is. The thought occured to me when reading the latest entry, about Richard Branson's Manor party in '76. Usually amusing, sometimes better than others, the picture alone this month should make it classic, featuring Jones in the hot air balloon donning a "protective" helmet, a beer can and that shit-eating grin with the gap between his teeth.

Allan Jones was so Lester Bangs like. Taking Drugs, messin' with Lou Reed, on first name terms with the stars, getting beat up by same ..

Who knew..?

I should add that I don't always love the column, but there's a CLASSIC one from a few years ago that has Lou Reed showing him a guitar synthesizer in the mid-70s, with the line that it was the greatest invention ever made "by human people." Of course, it proceeds to malfunction, Lou rips it out of the wall, knocking down lamps and so forth, while the thing loops endlessly in the background during the rest of the interview. High comedy.

They were teh funney for quite a while, but I must admit that I find that the barrel has been scraped, and it's all a bit tired. Poss a sort of microcosm of the magazine?

They published a fantastic episode a few years back, wherein Jones travels to Australia to witness XTC suffer through an industry meet 'n' greet. A particularly rich vein of humour is provided by the drummer, who at the end of every other paragraph chugs a beer and cheerfully reiterates, "Fuck, this is all beyond me..."

Yeah, but the new one's pretty fantastic.
