So, what you think of him?

Prefer La Mano Negra, but Chao did a great job in bringing a "pan- latin" sound to the French (and world!) audiences. Good records to smoke joints and drink sangria when it's really hot outside. La Mano in the early 90s was just such a powerful machine...

Bad-ass classic! His first solo album was scavenged from my friend's mother's independent folk-and-world focused radio station and I was completely blindsided. Multilingual Beckosity without the pseudo- hipster pretentiousness, Clandestino was even something of a concept album; it felt to me like a (less depressing) companion piece for the film El Norte or something. Unfortunately, I haven't heard his latest release yet, but I really hope it isn't as bad as "they" say it is.

This has already been discussed, no? Or was that Nelly Furtado? What do I think of him? Not much. I like to think about pleasant things. ;-)

me gustas tu sounds pleasant enough but I tired of it after about 3 plays. the rest of the latest album sounds like lazy crap reaggae to me.

I like his version of Light My Fire

big in Italia, went to a gig of 100,000 plus people at the piazza del duomo in Milano. Clandestino is a great album.

What was he doing?

Ugh! If you hung around with certain hippie/alternative types (at least here in Finland) in the late 90's and the early 00's, you couldn't escape hearing his music... I remember feeling very alone in hating him, when everyone else in the world seemed to be in love with him. He's one of those artists who siphons influences from everywhere and everyone, yet ends up sounding totally bloodless and soulless and harmless. His stuff is like elevator music to hippies.

I like his music, be it in small doses. Actually, my favourite is the album with Amadou & Mariam, Dimanche a Bamako.

Apart from that precisely, which he just produced or something remote like that, SOFUCKINGDUD

slightly. clearly Manu Chao brings out the best in me.

blunt, Sunday, 24 June 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

He was onstage at Merriweather Post Saturday night.

Several other threads on him (with several folks saying they hate him because of his audience not because of his music)

Manu Chao RFI,C/D, S+D, whatever

who is Manu Chao anyway?

Manu CHao??

Haha, it's the exact opposite with me: I hate his music, but I have nothing against his fans, since many of my friends belong to that category. Unfortunately this also got me exposed to his music much more than I would've ever cared for.

Tuomas, Monday, 25 June 2007 10:20 (eighteen years ago)

I like his more subtle music on his studio cds, and despite the formulaic nature of his thrash-ska numbers, even find those fun thanks in part to some of his vocal melodies(also live when he's jumping around his energy helps make his approach work).

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 00:55 (eighteen years ago)

haven't been to a show like that in a looong time
