Sorry, I know it's predictable but it really is one of the finest singles EVAH.

Chris Jones (Crackity Jones), Thursday, 25 March 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Seductive Barry" — that thing always puts me in quite the mood...

Common People, edging out I Spy.

abegrand, Thursday, 25 March 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Common People, preferably the version recorded live at the Glastonbury festival (can't remember the year, 96 was it? 95?).

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 25 March 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Today I will choose 'We are the boyz'

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 25 March 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"Like A Friend"... just ahead of "Disco 2000".

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 25 March 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"Live Bed Show", just ahead of "She's Dead".

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 25 March 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"I Spy" - I think it's everything Jarvis has ever tried to say rolled up into one song.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 25 March 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Lipgloss

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

blue girls

Obscurist response hurrah!
(Blue Girls is great, though. My pre-Island pick would be the astonishingly bleak "Being Followed Home" though)

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

disco 2000 or like a friend

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Something Changed.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Razzmatazz, mostly because no one's said it yet.

Luke Broster, Friday, 26 March 2004 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

'His 'n' Hers'. Yes, they do have a song called that. I would choose 'Like A Friend' but enough people have already mentioned that one.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"Sylvia" or "I Spy"

bbc6 personality (bbc6 personality), Friday, 26 March 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Kornél Kovács (Kornél Kovács), Friday, 26 March 2004 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Album: His n Hers
Song: Lipgloss or Razzmatazz.... really dig Street Lites (b-side to Lipgloss) too

Mog, Friday, 26 March 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Ansafone, for one night only.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 26 March 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Another vote for the obvious - "Common People" is one of my favorite singles of the '90s. Second place: "Something Changed."

mike a, Friday, 26 March 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I-Spy, for the reason Spencer said, and for the flashback sequence culminating in '"take your Year In Provence and stick it up your arse". I keep meaning to ask it anyone else did/does the critical notices thing.

This Is Hardcore for the stately bleakness.

The Fear for being the most unsettling song ever.

Lipgloss just for being the best version of that era when they were just pissing stylophone gold.

My Legendary Girlfriend for getting me to sit up and take notice in the first place (thanks due to Gary 'The Crow' Crowley, here)

Disco 2000 just because.

OPO can fuck off on the acrohorse it rode in on.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 26 March 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"this is hardcore" is just so *sui generis*, i can't imagine anyone else pulling anything like that off at all. the lp is kind of spotty though.

splates (splates), Thursday, 5 January 2006 10:10 (twenty years ago)

haha pulp opo haha!

oh go on then.

"styloroc - nites of suburbia"

After many weeks in the wilderness we came upon a strange, exotic land
A land of happy hours
where the sky is always grey and the food exceptionally greasy
We drank strange brown liquids
and our stomachs swelled up like balloons
A thousand fake orgasms every night
behind thick dralon curtains

They go on and on and on and on

We sank back into mauve PVC sofas
Outside dogs roamed the streets
and the rooftops glistened in the rain
but now we've grown so fat we can no longer pass through the door
So stay we must,
sprouting black hair beneath bri-nylon underwear

Yes, here we will stay
these nights of suburbia go on and on and on and on and on

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 5 January 2006 10:18 (twenty years ago)

Song: Do You Remember the First Time?
Album: Different Class.

I just never want to listen to This is Hardcore. I prefer picking music I like to listen to, as opposed to music I just like.

"Sheffield: Sex City"

Ha!

Raw, Uncompromising, and Noodly (noodle vague), Thursday, 9 March 2006 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Full disclosure: I saw them play this on some late night TV show in the early 90s whilst I was tripping my tits off, and tho I'd heard them a few times before this was the moment when I absolutely GOT IT and it was a lot like having my own life playing out in front of me.

On the other hand, "Something Changed" never fails to make me cry and I think it's one of the most perfect songs ever written.

Raw, Uncompromising, and Noodly (noodle vague), Thursday, 9 March 2006 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Album: His N' Hers
Song: A tough one, "Disco 2000" just ahead of "Razzmatazz"

Hits is the best "best of" album ever though.

daavid (daavid), Thursday, 9 March 2006 21:05 (twenty years ago)

I get to be the first to choose "Underwear."

I also very much enjoy "We Are The Boyz" and "Mile End."

billstevejim (billstevejim), Thursday, 9 March 2006 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Hits is the best "best of" album ever though.

And to think it left off O.U. and Mis-Shapes!

D. Bachyrycz, Thursday, 9 March 2006 22:00 (twenty years ago)

"Bad Cover Version" video. Best music video EVERRRR.
Oh, and "Do You Remember The First Time" for song.

danzig (danzig), Friday, 10 March 2006 06:27 (twenty years ago)

opo? no, sorry can't be done. i REFUSE.

piscesboy, Friday, 10 March 2006 10:12 (twenty years ago)

xpost

Mile End is fantastic, as is Ansaphone- Pulp had great b-sides, which is often the sign of a good band.

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Friday, 10 March 2006 10:25 (twenty years ago)

YES I LIKE IT WHEN PULP BREAK THE 7-MINUTE BARRIER OK

acoleuthic, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 03:17 (fifteen years ago)

ok if pressed, david's last summer

acoleuthic, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 03:17 (fifteen years ago)

brief chat about the reunion here. Pulp: C.L.A.S.S.I.C.O.R.D.U.D?

piscesx, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 03:41 (fifteen years ago)

and yeah HOW great is Seductive Barry?

piscesx, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 03:42 (fifteen years ago)

i'm gonna have to roll out that 'sexscape' line again - there's no other word, really

acoleuthic, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 03:43 (fifteen years ago)

he shoulda used that vocodored walrus of love voice on his solo stuff.

piscesx, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 03:48 (fifteen years ago)

I keep saying this, but put every post-Separations Pulp song of over 5:30 in length on one CD and you've got a fucking incredible CD

acoleuthic, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 03:50 (fifteen years ago)

(um, except Sylvia which is rubbish)

acoleuthic, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 03:50 (fifteen years ago)

it's just occurred to me that The Day After The Revolution probably deserves to be mentioned alongside the Great Trio - it keeps growing on me, and for the purposes of my mix CD we can cut off the final drone at 5:45 or so?

acoleuthic, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 03:52 (fifteen years ago)

but christ His'N'Hers is such an album. SUCH an album. it's the only one whose shorter songs would be worthy (IMO) of the aforementioned monsters. I mean shit the opening two tracks and fucking Pink Glove are perfect and the rest is pretty much up there as well

no no no no freaking idea how DC came to be regarded as anything other than its distant inferior

acoleuthic, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 03:57 (fifteen years ago)

four years pass...

I love "Like a Friend," though I wish it lasted 30 seconds longer.
