I realized recently, after enjoying a couple songs on a recent EP, especially the cover of Springsteen's "Bobby Jean", that as much as I like some of the mellower stuff on Superchunk's later albums and the acoustic versions of songs on various EPs, I've never gotten around to checking out the side project that probably sounds just like that stuff.

so anyway, best album to check out? any to avoid?

embarrassing confession: up until the moment I did a ILM search, I totally thought the name of the band was Portastic. I feel like such a dingbat.

"the nature of sap" -most accurate album title ever!
My OPO- "Spying on the Spies"

get the brazilian EP, it's totally amazing, really gorgeous.

when i saw him a couple months ago, he got switched from headliner to supporter but the crowd wanted him to do one more song and he indulged us by picking his guitar up and the inevitable song requests screamed forth but i threw out caetano veloso's "baby" and he immediately launched into it in portuguese. i looked around towards the end of the song and i saw a lot of big smiles.

search his cover of "st. elmo's fire" with ira and georgia from yo la tengo.

ps: if you liked that springsteen cover, try his take on "growin' up".

I always took a second glance in the record store at the EP (or whatever it is) with Ken Vandermark and Tim Mulvenna from the Vandermark 5.

I totally agree. The name of it is "De Mel,De Melao." Just beautiful stuff...very sweet but with some weird, dark, psychedlic sounds as well. Get this one.

despite owning three albums the only songs i can seem to bring to mind are the singles. search those, i guess.

I really like the Vandermark EP, but I'm a Vandermark nut.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 5 January 2006 02:09 (nineteen years ago)

yes. personally, i am fond of the indie-tastic "i hope your heart is not brittle". but you cant go wrong with any of the records, regardless of what path mac takes.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 5 January 2006 02:14 (nineteen years ago)

don't know when i'll ever see it again, but the video for "san andreas" off the great "slow note from a sinking ship" was amazing. it was basically the talking heads "once in a lifetime" video but instead of david byrne in a suit and glasses, it was mac with a minor threat shirt doing the arm-chopping move.

other pick would be scrapbook, with "st. elmo's fire" on it. everything actually except for the nature of sap which was weak.

four years pass...

my friend has a record label, Heart of a Champion, here in Mpls and he has good news for Portastatic fans! : )

This fall, we will be doing first-time vinyl pressings of the last three Portastatic "rock" albums, under license from Merge Records. We'll be doing (likely all at once) The Summer of the Shark, Bright Ideas, and Be Still Please.

sweet!

the rest of his stuff i never listened to that much but seriously... give the "del mel del melao" ep a spin if you have access to it.
