(Note: for this question lets really stick with "bands" as opposed to "producers" -- feeling a bit rockist today.)

I mean that half tounge in cheek, but they really are one of my favorite bands to see live. I just saw them again on Saturday, and although they didn't play any of the tracks off the first album and they spent too much time in the crappy power-ballad period, they still rocked, especially for old guys. I think they were about to walk on for a second encore, but the New Daisy (in Memphis) kicked on the music and it was over. And I was hoping for "Auf Wiedersehen".

That said, Bo Diddley, if he + Jerome can count as a band. Otherwise, the Aggrovators.

The Master Musicians of Jajouka, or perhaps the Dave Holland Big Band. If it's only rock, well, then, Pere Ubu. Although, in ackowledgment of the posters above -- if I'd just seen Cheap Trick live (haven't in a few years) I'd put them at the top of the list as well.

A boring list, but I enjoyed this bit:
Jerry Casale of Devo on Amy Winehouse
Why her? Because she's, like, amazingly frightening and frighteningly talented. And because she's hypnotic and I can't take my eyes away, like a car accident. If she was a cartoon she would play a really sexy STD, and her persona is part of the appeal. Would I like her music without it? You never know. It's hard to separate one from the other. That's like asking, "Would you like Louis Armstrong if he wasn't who he was?" I've never met Amy, but my advice to her would be: "Drugs aren't all they're cracked up to be."

I'd pick Karin Dreijer Andersson I guess

best quote possibly "LCD's records are always immaculately produced: everything sounds so analogue and real, with a mix of electronics and live instruments. They don't sound like Bloc Party records, basically."
Ed "Miaooow" McFarlane, Friendly Fires
I had kind of hoped that someone would choose Andrew WK. Instead I just got to roll my eyes at Snow Patrol picking Elbow.
As far as the current band I'm enjoying the most, it's NOMO, probably followed by The Oh Sees, but I guess I'm just not the kind of guy who makes a sweeping BEST BAND IN THE WORLD call, y'know? I've assumed too much of the mealy-mouthed "Well, I like it a lot, but I understand if it's not your thing and maybe you'd be happier with something elseā¦"

Ne-Yo on Coldplay
True artists nowadays are few and far between, but I'd have to say I'm a huge fan of Coldplay. Everything they do is melody, and melody speaks to everybody, be you a hip-hop head, be you an R&B guy, be you a country-and-western guy. Melody is the blood that flows through any and all musical genres. There are some songs where I have no idea what they're talking about. Chris Martin is almost saying: "OK, take these words and these melodies and determine your own adventure - what does it mean to you?" That's the question he's asking with the songs, as opposed to trying to force meaning on you.

LOL at a guy who spent some of the last year remixing Keane and Erasure complaining that LA is a "cultural black hole".
Andrew WK is pretty much my favourite band of the moment. My body and brain are still vibrating quite severely after seeing him live on Tuesday. When that calms down I'll probably return to being hopelessy devoted to Thee Ahs, a bunch of teenage wonders from Vancouver.
