I'm going with the Animal Collective

(Note: for this question lets really stick with "bands" as opposed to "producers" -- feeling a bit rockist today.)

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 25 March 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Radiohead.

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Thursday, 25 March 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh shit! The Pixies! :-D

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Thursday, 25 March 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The Hot 8 Brass Band. Or the Bad Plus.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 25 March 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

If you really need a rock band, then Spoon, I guess.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 25 March 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Wilco!

(Donna in not immediately answering "The Fall" shocker)

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 25 March 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Lightning Bolt.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 25 March 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Belle & Sebastian or Scissor Sisters or Racebannon

Animal Collective is very good, though, you're right.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 25 March 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

As is Lightning Bolt. And someone should say Xiu Xiu.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 25 March 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Since I am deeply in love with "Tallahassee" at this moment, I proclaim The Mountain Goats" to be the best.

paul c (paul c), Thursday, 25 March 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

How come nobody has said the mighty Foghat?

Leon Lighips, Thursday, 25 March 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Destroyer!

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

since my indiffernece to the YYYs less-produced b-sides make me nervous and the members of Desaparecidos evidently can't be in the same town long enough to make a follow-up, I'm gonna say Good Charlotte.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

or Rocket From The Crypt. Tough call.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, no it isn't. *hides*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah hides from the TRUTH he does, says I!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Let me know when Good Charlotte writes their "Ditch Digger." Until then, I don't have enough patience to even consider them.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

DA BAND

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheap Trick!

I mean that half tounge in cheek, but they really are one of my favorite bands to see live. I just saw them again on Saturday, and although they didn't play any of the tracks off the first album and they spent too much time in the crappy power-ballad period, they still rocked, especially for old guys. I think they were about to walk on for a second encore, but the New Daisy (in Memphis) kicked on the music and it was over. And I was hoping for "Auf Wiedersehen".

Mike Salmo (salmo), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Satan's Tornade

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

animal collective probably...

but air have to be considered.

duke pilate, Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

In what way would Cheap Trick be "half-tongue-in-cheek?" Not a band yet has been mentioned on this thread that's fit to launder Robin Zander's underoos.

That said, Bo Diddley, if he + Jerome can count as a band. Otherwise, the Aggrovators.

M Specktor, Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Judas Priest, fuckers.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

To Live and Shave in L.A.

The Jicks

JUST for today: the Vengaboys

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I would probably say Animal Collective too. This all hinges on Vooredoms not releasing something anytime soon.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

low!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Air Conditioning

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

the answer is always Belle and Sebastian, though the Pogues and the Lilac Time are running them a good race right now.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm weighing in late -- who cares?... (perhaps true even if I'd weighed in earlier).

The Master Musicians of Jajouka, or perhaps the Dave Holland Big Band. If it's only rock, well, then, Pere Ubu. Although, in ackowledgment of the posters above -- if I'd just seen Cheap Trick live (haven't in a few years) I'd put them at the top of the list as well.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

My reason for "half-tounge-in-cheek" is that they haven't put out a solid album since Dream Police. There's a few shining moments even on the last album, Special One, but I think we can probably agree it's not a great album. However, if someone was to ask for Best Live Band in the World, I would seriously consider the Trick. They really capture something on stage. Robin's voice is in pretty decent shape for his age and he still has women from 18-55 swooning. Rick's stange antics are classic, I pulled 2 picks out of a beer puddle (and I liked it!) and his skills are undeniable. Bunn E. has to be one of my favorite (if not my favorite) rock drummers. And Tom's 12 string bass sounds like a pack of elephants. I've seen them 3 times in the past three years, and everytime I've felt like I regained faith in Rock. It's like George Martin said "They're a healing force in music" .

Mike Salmo (salmo), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark, Animal Collective are playing in C-ville on (I believe) Monday night! You should definitely come up for that show!

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Friday, 26 March 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

My answer: Bark Psychosis

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Friday, 26 March 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the most exciting live show I've seen in the past year award goes to the Dirty Three, so I'm throwing that out there, even though I know it's completely not true.

cws (cws), Friday, 26 March 2004 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I was Vengawrong, it is the Vengaboys!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 26 March 2004 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Clarke -- where are they playing?

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 26 March 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

OK just checked, I will probably go. Private email soon.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 26 March 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Melt-Banana!

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 26 March 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Easy, the Darkness.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 26 March 2004 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, the answer is Mogwai.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 March 2004 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Broken Social Scene

five years pass...

Various pop artists reveal their choices
http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/jun/26/best-band-rock-pop

Mostly dull, uninspiring ones too - Coldplay 4 times ffs

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Friday, 26 June 2009 12:59 (sixteen years ago)

A boring list, but I enjoyed this bit:

Jerry Casale of Devo on Amy Winehouse

Why her? Because she's, like, amazingly frightening and frighteningly talented. And because she's hypnotic and I can't take my eyes away, like a car accident. If she was a cartoon she would play a really sexy STD, and her persona is part of the appeal. Would I like her music without it? You never know. It's hard to separate one from the other. That's like asking, "Would you like Louis Armstrong if he wasn't who he was?" I've never met Amy, but my advice to her would be: "Drugs aren't all they're cracked up to be."

Alex in NYC, Friday, 26 June 2009 13:01 (sixteen years ago)

I'd pick Karin Dreijer Andersson I guess

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Friday, 26 June 2009 13:05 (sixteen years ago)

there is almost no musical discourse within that list, that i have the slightest interest in

the funk soul custos (country matters), Friday, 26 June 2009 13:06 (sixteen years ago)

ok

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Friday, 26 June 2009 13:06 (sixteen years ago)

"Akon does what he feels, not what he deems suitable for the industry" may be one of the more frowny quotes

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Friday, 26 June 2009 13:07 (sixteen years ago)

best quote possibly "LCD's records are always immaculately produced: everything sounds so analogue and real, with a mix of electronics and live instruments. They don't sound like Bloc Party records, basically."

Ed "Miaooow" McFarlane, Friendly Fires

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Friday, 26 June 2009 13:07 (sixteen years ago)

I had kind of hoped that someone would choose Andrew WK. Instead I just got to roll my eyes at Snow Patrol picking Elbow.

As far as the current band I'm enjoying the most, it's NOMO, probably followed by The Oh Sees, but I guess I'm just not the kind of guy who makes a sweeping BEST BAND IN THE WORLD call, y'know? I've assumed too much of the mealy-mouthed "Well, I like it a lot, but I understand if it's not your thing and maybe you'd be happier with something else…"

THESE ARE MY FEELINGS! FEEL MY FEELINGS! (I eat cannibals), Friday, 26 June 2009 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

Ne-Yo on Coldplay

True artists nowadays are few and far between, but I'd have to say I'm a huge fan of Coldplay. Everything they do is melody, and melody speaks to everybody, be you a hip-hop head, be you an R&B guy, be you a country-and-western guy. Melody is the blood that flows through any and all musical genres. There are some songs where I have no idea what they're talking about. Chris Martin is almost saying: "OK, take these words and these melodies and determine your own adventure - what does it mean to you?" That's the question he's asking with the songs, as opposed to trying to force meaning on you.

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Friday, 26 June 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

lol @ robert wyatt's crusty old lefty routine

velko, Friday, 26 June 2009 17:44 (sixteen years ago)

LOL at a guy who spent some of the last year remixing Keane and Erasure complaining that LA is a "cultural black hole".

Andrew WK is pretty much my favourite band of the moment. My body and brain are still vibrating quite severely after seeing him live on Tuesday. When that calms down I'll probably return to being hopelessy devoted to Thee Ahs, a bunch of teenage wonders from Vancouver.
