It's definately Felix's best. I was a little worried when I heard Cyberwhore, but the album is great. Great melodic hooks. As one would expect, very sexy and very 80's. James Murphy tears it up!

He's changed it about ten times, it was going to be the Neon Memoirs, and Neon Adventures and all sorts of shit, then he told us he'd abandoned the Devin Dazzle idea at which point we protested.

It tries some similar things to Hell's "NY Muscle" but pulls them off where that record kind of failed. But it is undeniably Felix. Why is he so horny and obsessed with Hollywood?

I LOVE Munich Machine, maybe as much as Thee Glitz, and I probably listen to it more. I may need to give NY Muscle more time, but on first impressions it's kind of dull and joyless and hipsterish. Devin Dazzle is just pretty damn infectious.

i dig ny muscle quite a bit, though it did take a few listens to grow on me. and yeah, as i said a few months ago, devin dazzle is really great, even if the hardcore felix fans i know hate it.

i have to listen to it again, there was definitely a lot of stuff i liked on first listen. also it was first thing in the morning and i was really out of it and distracted.

listening to this again on a real actual stereo, i'm enjoying it though still not much is sticking out. "let your mind be your bed" is fun cuz i'm a sucker for whatever synth sound dude sprinkles throughout (i'm not sure how to describe it but it kind of reminds me of "happy hour"). "watching cars go by/cyberwhore" i'm liking a lot too.

oh and "what she wants" is the one with dude from dfa right? i like that too but it hasn't completely hooked me yet.

This album is pretty great - but it can also be a cold, hard display of craft. FdH is like the Squarepusher of electro-pop: he's got mega-talent, but not necessarily the "human" touch. Practically every song on this record is perfect, yet other than a few here and there ("Nina" being one), I'm not sure it's going to get that many people humming along outside his fanbase.

That said, for those of us who happen to like cold, hard craft from time to time (I even like the new Squarepusher), good stuff.

Craft doesn't preclude emotion, necessarily - but when I hear his music, I hear gears, I hear style, formula, craft - and none of this is a bad thing. In fact, prior to posting at ILM, I had never really read anything to suggest otherwise. I would apply the same argument to Elvis Costello, Andy Partridge, Abba, etc

This album sounds like an exercise in making pop songs to me - specifically tailored pop songs - when someone said upthread that they had wished it was maybe more of a "dance album", it occurred to me that one of the reasons it may not sound like a "dance album" (like say, the Aphrohead record might have), is because it isn't structured, the songs are pieced together just like pop songs always have been, with A's and B's and symmetrical structures and things. Not to mention the fact that every song is in a different style - who does that other than total pop lifers like Partridge (think Dukes), Costello or Stephen Merrit? And please excuse me, but I tend to make a b-line for structure in pop records, especially ones that sound to me like they're explicitly written to demonstrate form and style.

I agree, some of the songs end a little too early but I had the same issue with "Madame Hollywood" and "Harlot" (best intro EVER!) from the last album. I think its very deliberate tho, but it's no big deal, just hit "repeat".

four weeks pass...

the slower, pulsating tracks are starting to grow on me. "she's so damn cool" is great, felix's vocals and the effects on his voice fit the song very well- i wish he would sing more! it is definitely kompakt-esque.

the one-two punch of "rocket ride" and "what she wants" is fun. objectively, there's no reason james murphy's vocal isn't annoying as fuck, but it improbably winds up catchy as hell. i think it's due to the more sung parts in the middle. the intro is cool and disorienting and too short compared to the rest, but the great bassline justifies the length somewhat.

the guitar break in "nina" is the melody to neil diamond's "america!"

this album is punching ALL my buttons - "What She Wants" and "Ready to Wear" are both so gorgeous and the whole thing is just so ridiculously effusive, by which I mean "wonderful and, to me, moving"

listening to 'cyberwhore/cars go by' i had that rare feeling that 'this is one of the best songs i've ever heard'. i still feel that way. and yes it's emotional, so very emotional esp. the last track.

when does he play live? who's seen him? does he bring all the vocalists out or what?

what a record though eh? this year's 'discovery' to be borin about it,
in that it's the more pop, less demonstrably dance-y so all the hardcore dance types moan but the dance-*pop* fans go crackers. like me!

I was appalled by Felix's lazy, weak-ass remix of Benassi's "Love Is Gonna Save Us" though. That song is pure gold (maybe the best single this year) and he does NOTHING with it.

I dunno if it's the goofy cover art or the James Murphy collaboration but this record had really dropped in my estimation in the 12 years since I listened to it last. It's all tied up in a particular summer but I hadn't previously appreciated what a sad record it was.

She's So Damn Cool is still amazing.
