Huge fan of Paniots Nine, a 1960s record reissued on Avant in 1998. Microtonal playing, Greek, klezmer, middle-eastern styles all going head to head, and cool liners from Harvey Pekar.

I second Paniots Nine whole-heartedly, and if you've seen American Splendor you've heard the title track, as it's played over the opening credits. He has another that I'm quite fond of, "Get Ready to Receive Yourself", on the Leo label -- this one's a little more outside. I don't think that you can really go wrong in his catalog.

four years pass...

I don't think that you can really go wrong in his catalog.

really? after hearing "Paniots Nine" in American Splendor, i'm eager to start listening, but judging by what Wikipedia has to say i don't know if the rest of his output would resemble it:

Maneri was impressed by the music of Arnold Schoenberg and organized a jazz ensemble that performed some twelve tone music. (His later music is, however, not in the twelve-tone technique.)

seeing as Paniots Nine was recorded in 1963, i'm reluctant to buy anything much later (which appears to be everything else available). the only albums available on demonoid are In Full Cry and Coming Down The Mountain. search or destroy?
