ethan, Saturday, 20 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i love it. op-art music which folds in and retracts and refracts on itself.

jess, Saturday, 20 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

maybe the best thing he has done so far

francesco, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Amazing. Just about the cleverest explication for the pop-minded of what makes non-dance electronic music interesting that I've ever heard. "Don't Talk," especially, is just a fantastic feat of imagination.

Douglas Wolk, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

agree, 'endless summer' is pretty good too

el wanko, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is this available again? I never saw a copy.

Tom, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom - not sure. Originally a 45rpm on Mego. Then reissued by Moikai as a CD single a couple of years ago. Haven't seen it around recently. But yes, as everyone says, the most inspired/imaginative 'cover versions' in years.

Andrew L, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i got the 7" for three dollars.

ethan, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's gorgeous. I found the Moikai reissue for a fiver in Kim's in Manhattan, and I really love it. I find myself listening to it a lot; it's only 8 minutes, so it's easy to digest all at once. I thought it was awesome in headphones, but then I listened to it on speakers, and it really comes alive. Like 'Endless Summer,' it's very spatial and really fills a room.

Great single. Anybody want to comment on the relationship of the Fennesz versions to the originals?

Mark, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

where can i buy one?

gareth, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Forced Exposure still have the CD for sale. Five Dollars.

Andrew L, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK, I'll comment on the relationship. "Paint It, Black," as far as I can tell, is entirely free-form until it hits the chorus melody at the end (others are welcome to school me). "Don't Talk" is chord-for-chord identical to the Beach Boys' version--or, rather, the dominant tone you're hearing at any given moment belongs to the appropriate Beach Boys accompaniment chord. (Sing along with it at the appropriate tempo; it works.)

one year passes...
I want this. damn you people. My future children need bread!

Yeah, I read him saying somewhere that he has a version w/ Brian Wilson singing over it. Might be something interesting to do, just cut out the really low and the really high frequencies of the original and overlay it, I guess.

OCP (OCP), Thursday, 12 December 2002 12:06 (twenty-three years ago)

When I interviewed him for Pitchfork he confirmed that he has a version of "Don't talk..." with Wilson's vocals on top. I begged him to send me an MP3 but no luck.

natedey (ndeyoung), Monday, 24 April 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

he played a duo set in Berlin tonight with Marcus Schmickler that I asked Marcus to record for me, so hopefully that worked out.

j abbey, Tuesday, 25 April 2006 01:27 (nineteen years ago)

this is my favorite one of his.

I just found a vinyl copy of Live In Japan (also a thicket of dense procesed loveliness). Looked it up on the web and realized the dude who put it out is in jail for fraud. He ran the Autofact label which also released some Earth records. Hmm, I wonder if this really is limited to 100 copies like it says?

nine months pass...
There is a website which has the "Live In Japan" LP for sale. I guess the normal version of it finally came out? Check it out, www.anthemrecordsinc.com
I ordered mine already! It's under electronic, should be the first record listed there.
