Kanye West v. Good Charlotte FITE!!!!

I just saw Kanye talking shit about Good Charlotte on Much Music, saying that the line "That's the anthem get your damn hands up/ We don't want to be like them" was a Jay-Z diss (since they are saying they don't want to be like Jay) and Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous is offensive b/c it's only about black people, i.e. OJ and Marion Barry. The VJ was all awkward and then he said "that's a good point".

Sym (shmuel), Saturday, 27 March 2004 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

that's really gonna ruffle some feathers down at the Hot Topic

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Saturday, 27 March 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

oh pleeease pleeeease can GC bum rush Kanye and break his jaw so bad that he CAN'T make any records this time? maybe break all of his fingers as well, so he can't operate a sampler. and then put it on pay-per-view.

Dave M. (rotten03), Saturday, 27 March 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

PPV is really the only suitable venue for this four-on-one cage match sampler explosion

yeah, out of these two groups, Kanye is clearly the one who I don't want to hear music from in the future :-|

djdee2005, Saturday, 27 March 2004 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

They deserve each other.

Still, that's the first time I've heard the tag of "racism" aimed at GC.

Moreover, I STRONGLY doubt they were targetting Jay-Z.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 27 March 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony should really weigh in here, but I always assumed the "them" in "Anthem" was meant to signify "non-Punks" and "preps" and "jocks" and "straights" and whathaveyou. From where I'm sittin' (high atop a horse of utterly imperious disdain for all parties concerned in this debate), Good Charlotte have respect for the Hip Hop community (or at least their lead tool does, whose constantly invoking tired hip hop gesticulations to augment his trite and banal lyrics).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 27 March 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe the Anthem meant they didn't want to be one hit wonders, wich for some weird reason they are not.

They knew that they only deservered to be one hit wonders.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

considering it came out just a year after "Izzo", I'm pretty sure the GC anthem/hands up couplet is a direct reference, but I always took it as an affectionate (if possibly winking/ironic) one, I think Kanye connecting it to the "I don't ever wanna be like you" part of the song is kind of a stretch. plus the Marion Barry line was ripped off Chris Rock anyway.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 27 March 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, rippin' on OJ and Marion Barry? Couldn't they have come up with some more contemporary figures of ridicule? They're both so....so....so....Nineties, fer pete's sakes.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 27 March 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

first off they stole the OJ and Marion Barry jokes from Chris Rock! Evidently Kanye never saw Bring The Pain! If anything, those lines and the anthem swipe were TRIBUTES to the Hova and Rock, so Kanye's just shootin' off about nothing. Plus the Madden Bros. are on the new N.E.R.D. album.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 27 March 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

somebody send Amy Phillips' White Stripes abstract to the man, STAT!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 27 March 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

woops, didn't notice Al already brought up the Chris Rock thing. my bad.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 27 March 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony ripped off my pointing out who ripped off what! I'm gonna go on Canadian TV and call you out!

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 27 March 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I am curious where Pharrell will stand on this beef.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 27 March 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Kanye's new video is pretty well done.

David Allen (David Allen), Saturday, 27 March 2004 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I like it a lot. The going-through-the-conveyor-belt part is pure genius. I don't like the song as much as the last two though.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 27 March 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm someone who is blissfully ignorant of Good Charlotte lyrics. What's the line about OJ and Marion Barry Kanye is referring to?

Sym (shmuel), Saturday, 27 March 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you know if you were famous
You could kill you're wife
And there's no such thing as 25 to life
As long as you've got the cash to pay for Cochran
Did you know if you were caught
And you were smoking crack
McDonalds wouldn't even wanna take you back
You could always just run for mayor of D.C

It's the McDonalds reference that makes the Chris Rock roots obvious.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 27 March 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The line about Cochran does make it sound a bit less than race-neutral.

djdee2005, Saturday, 27 March 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"Dershowitz" doesn't really flow, and I'm sure they got no love for Claus Von Bulow either.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 27 March 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't know it was McDonalds. I thought it was "Your parents"

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

and they said in an interview that the song was inspired by reading a whiny interview with Axl Rose, who previously had been one of their idols.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 27 March 2004 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

the song clearly empathizes with folks living "life out on the street" though.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 27 March 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Something I'm sure they've had a lot of experience with.

djdee2005, Saturday, 27 March 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

ok. sympathizes.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 27 March 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

and they said in an interview that the song was inspired by reading a whiny interview with Axl Rose, who previously had been one of their idols.

b-b-b-b-but Axl Rose is WHITE!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 27 March 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

he may be white but uh, umm. I don't know. He's crazy?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

You may be white, I may be crazy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 March 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey!

I'm only part white

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

For my sins, I was actually referring to a Billy Joel line.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 March 2004 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It may be that they are "paying homage" to Chris Rock, but I could still see how someone could take it the wrong way, even if they were aware of the homage. After all, would anyone think it was acceptable to have a lyric that said "I love black people, but I hate N*****" and then say "Oh, man, that was just an homage to Chris Rock!"?

There are things that Chris Rock can say that maybe Good Charlotte should, um, not say.

Scott CE, Saturday, 27 March 2004 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I should note that Kanye did not actually state the song was racist. It was more that the song did not sit well with him.

Sym (shmuel), Saturday, 27 March 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm trying to remember what the whole thing even sprung from, the "fashion quiz" i think? it was a pretty classic tv moment in its akwardness, anyway.

m (m), Saturday, 27 March 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Kanye. I don't like Good Charlotte. I can see how Good Charlotte's lyrics would make Kanye uncomfortable.

djdee2005, Saturday, 27 March 2004 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes m, it was the fashion quiz. Rick the Temp asked Kanye which clothing line goes with which artist. So Kanye got Eve's clothing line right. Then Rick asked which artist designed the clothing line 'Made' and Kanye was like, "I don't know, maybe Memphis Bleek." When Rick said it was Good Charlotte, Kanye went off. He ended by saying that Good Charlotte should not be allowed to design their own clothes.

Sym (shmuel), Saturday, 27 March 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd go further and say they shouldn't wear any clothes at all.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 28 March 2004 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The Young & The Shirtless

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 28 March 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a thing in the current issue of Complex magazine where Kanye talks about his clothes and also rates other people's fashion sense with scores for both white and black people. Its pretty funny.

Mil, Sunday, 28 March 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
you guys are a joke. GC is a good band but if kanye were to "fight" them he would kick there ass... have u seen those guys lately???? they are freaking skin and bones plus the lack of sunlight probably isnt healthy either. any ways i really like kanye but he has this wierd idea that all white people that are any good are appearently racist... so he has a skewed world view. but his music is freakin great and so is GC. but for different reasons... GC- there sarcasm and cynisism makes there "hopeless" music uplifting and humerous. Kanye- can say anything and somehow if he puts it to music it sounds good, also he has a strong sence of sarcasm and humor. plus both seam to be relativly intelegent song writers... i am no punk and i am no thug just a music lover that enjoys listening to these great artists... plus at this point the publicity this could give GC would be helpfull since they seem to have droped from public view as of late. so kanye is doing them a favor.

Brandyn, Friday, 16 September 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

GC is a good band

No they're not.

GC- there sarcasm and cynisism makes there "hopeless" music uplifting and humerous.

No it doesn't.

GC would be helpfull since they seem to have droped from public view as of late

Fuckin' amen to that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

And here I thought this was being revived to say that they were collaborating!

mike h. (mike h.), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)
