Spain - Blue Moods of Spain - lost classic or dud?

I have fond memories of stealing this from Tower Records - it was the first (of literally hundreds) of CDs I stole that summer - in fact I kept a girlfriend at NYU long after her expiration date just so I could use her place to dump off bounty

ANYWAY...I just pulled this out for the first time in like 8 or 9 years - whaddya know - it's still pretty nice! Total downer, natch, but really pretty in parts. I never heard anything past this first one - whatever happened to them?

It's Charlie Haden's son, right?

It reminds me in parts of that long forgotten 80s band Double - remember "Captain of her Heart?" Wowzers its all flooding back

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 27 March 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

it's good. spain are one of my wife's favorite bands ever. the second album was good too. the third was too much of the same thing.

One of the few records I bought on the basis of a mixtape. My friend had put Untitled Nr 1. I still love that song immensely, but the full record didn't do me anything. I found it far too plodding for some reason.

It's Charlie Haden's son, right?
Yes, his sister's in thatdog if I remember correctly.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 27 March 2004 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

It would have been better with a decent singer. Charlie Haden's bland voice was the reason it was so plodding.

Curt (cgould), Saturday, 27 March 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the third was too much of the same thing.

It was sorta chirpier (in a way). Agree with the general assessments here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 March 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that Haden was named Josh, and that one Spain album is enough, though it is lovely, so I'm going with classic

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Sunday, 28 March 2004 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"Untitled No. 1" was the song that hooked me as well. Back in the days when people used to listen to Real Audio broadcasts of KCRW (me!), they had a MBE installment with Spain in the studio. I was sort of bummed by the general droopiness of the remainder of the album, but I've kept it all these years (even though I've had plenty of opportunities to trade it in).

three years pass...

Argh! Can't reacall for teh sweet life of me which Spain CD it was I saw today in a shop, dirt cheap it was too...

(Hm, shall I really go tomorrow and buy it perhaps? Bitter food for thought, yeh :(

O now I kno' - I Believe it was. So not one of the better ones... Will sleep untroubled, I guess.

it was good, just not necessary if you have the others.

this band certainly knew how to pick women for their covers

akm, Friday, 17 August 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

While Untitled is certainly the highlight "I Lied" is an underrated gem off that first one. "I couldn't love you if I tried"

zaxxon25, Friday, 17 August 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

just in case people want more of Josh Haden vocals.
he was all over the first Soulsavers album - Tough Guys Dont Dance, before they booted him out for Mark Lanegan on their new one.
though they did do a cover of a Spain track on the last album as well - so Josh should get some royalties that way.

My God this album still slays me every time...nothing else quite like it...

lost classic. "dreaming of you" and "ray of light" sort of sound like prototypes for andy sparhawk's whole steez

reggie (qualmsley), Friday, 16 September 2011 19:09 (fourteen years ago)

Perhaps the only cool thing I've ever learned about via Morning Becomes Eclectic.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 16 September 2011 19:27 (fourteen years ago)

four years pass...

Found a sealed bargain-bin copy of Sargent Place so I figured, why not? And it's really good! "The Fighter" is gorgeous.
