Please help! 3 unknown pieces

David Raposa was kind enough to let me upload this MP3 to his domain...

It's a very small file, a little over a meg, and I'd appreciate if you'd download it to help me identify at least one of them. It's 3 unidentified clips...the first one being some sort of IDM, the second possibly being Bartok, and the third sounding a bit like Schnittke. I'd really appreciate your help in determining what any of the pieces are, but especially the last one. It's so beautiful and hypnotic that I absolutely must know what it is!

unidentified flying answers

Melissa W, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, PLEASE help out. The last two classical-sounding bits are wonderful.

David Raposa, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It may just be my browser, but I got a "file not found on remote host" message.

Johnathan, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The message I got was that the entire popshots.org domain was OUT OF SERVICE. What up?

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My site's down (as of 10:45 AM). Dunno why. Keep on checking, I guess. If it comes back up soon, I'll let you know. (Or you can keep on checking.)

David Raposa, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

First piece is "Consumed" by Plastikman. I agree that the second sounds like Bartok. The third is truly doing my head in. I want to saw Dutilleux, but I don't think it is.

I'll keep working on it. Lovely selections, btw.

Michael Jones, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah! Thank you so much for identifying the first piece! Now for the next two...

Melissa W, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm sure not going to allow this thread to disappear, damn it.

David Raposa, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Download this now, please! I really really must know what this last piece is... And even if you can't figure out, you'll probably love it too!

Melissa W, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Melissa, do you know the Bartok quartets? Rather embarrassingly, I don't -- at least, I don't know them well. And unfortunately, since my turntable is broken, I can't pull out my vinyl of them and compare. The second piece is in something like D major, and I know Bartok's 6th is supposedly in D, isn't it? (Though I don't recall those passages showing up in what little of it I can recall.)

But the acoustic of the second and third recordings is very similar, so I have a feeling that whatever they are, they'll turn out to be from the same release (if this was a commercial release). The third piece hints at D too, and I suspect #2 and #3 might be from the same piece, though I wouldn't bet large amounts of money on it -- the gliss at the end of #3 throws that theory for a bit of a loop.

Of course, I'm "assuming" that piece #2 is a quartet -- I actually only hear three parts (counting the pedal point in the cello), so maybe it's a string trio? And what is that horrible scratch at the beginning, by the way?

One left-field (albeit unlikely) thought: Erwin Schulhoff? It's definitely not part of any of his string music that I know (String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2 or the Fünf Bagatelles). So probably not, but you never know.

Phil, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bartok's 6th is indeed in D major; I'm currently 59% of the way through a Real Player 8 download so I can check the samples over on Amazon. Anyone with a fast connection (or who can already play Real Audio files) should pop over there to solve this mystery; it's the Dusinberre/Fejer recording of the string quartets that has samples of all parts of #6.

Phil: I'm impressed that you can identify a common acoustic from a 48kbps mono MP3 file with no information above 8kHz! Though, listening again, I hear what you mean. The glitch seems to be a moment of clipping (recorded with automatic gain control, perhaps?), and the noise-floor is very high even between the pieces (taken off a cassette tape?).

Melissa & David: where did this file come from?

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doesn't seem to be Bartok's StrQrt #6, I'm afraid. Maybe we're barking up the wrong tree with him?

I've never heard Ligeti's string quartets - is it possible that the third piece, with its slithering glissandi, could be him?

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Like Phil, I thought 2 and 3 might be the same composer. And like Melissa, my first instinct was Schnittke. They're not on either of my Schnittke CDs however (but thanks for the incentive to play them again - he's grate isn't he?). Of course, he's so prolific, it could still be him.

My second thought was Gorecki - Kronos recorded a couple of his string quartets, but I've not heard them. Since we're reduced to guessing, I nominate him if only so others can rule him out.

pleeeeeease hellllllllllllp

Melissa W, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

[Sorry to get your hopes up, Melissa & David - just posting to keep this high on the New Answers board].

Where are the classical experts when we need 'em? Surely Sinker must have some idea on this?

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, you did get my hopes up. ;-P

Someone must know.

Melissa W, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Michael, you bastard. I kill you dead.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damnit, I need to know!

Melissa W, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
I have just uploaded this to my own site.
After all this time, I still have no idea what the last two pieces are.

Download here.

robin (robin), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

six months pass...
Did you ever find this out Melissa?

David. (Cozen), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
No. Heh.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 6 November 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

2 years later and no closer?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 8 November 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW it's still up on my site, for those interested in taking a crack at it.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 8 November 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
better late than never. i have no clue what the third piece is, but the second is shostakovich's 4th string quartet.

you will be shot, Tuesday, 25 November 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

no, really. i'm dying to know this as well.

someone?
please?

you will be shot, Monday, 1 December 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I love you, whoever you are.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 1 December 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

(And yes, the third piece is the one that I'm most desperate to find out about!)

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 1 December 2003 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

After much researching, it's also Shostakovich, his 7th String Quartet. Lento. YAY!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 1 December 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

And I can't believe I didn't figure this out sooner, considering how much Shostakovich I own.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 1 December 2003 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Now to figure out which recording it is...

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 1 December 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

you're kidding right?

i feel quite stupid now.

you will be shot, Monday, 1 December 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i suppose i always listened to the late quartets more obsessively...

still, that's no excuse.

as for the recordings, i can't say for sure, but the borodin quartet's aresaid to be definitive... unless you can find those by the beethoven quartet.

you will be shot, Monday, 1 December 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

It's definitely not the Borodin Quartet version. I'm listening to all the sound samples of performances I can find, and none of them are quite as stretched out and emotional as this one.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 1 December 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

while we're at it, any good string quartet suggestions? it's my latest fetish.

so far, I quite dig what these guys did with it:
beethoven, bartok, schubert, mendelssohn, mozart, carter, scelsi, ligeti, schoenberg, berg, webern, janacek, debussy, ravel, martinu, lutoslawski, schnittke, cage, rihm, kurtag, glass, feldman, brahms, borodin.

what am i missing?
