I have one blank CD left, which one should I burn?

David Allen (David Allen), Saturday, 27 March 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

buy another blank CD.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 27 March 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Tonight's the Night, but don't ask me why.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 27 March 2004 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

On musical criteria, you need both. On ethical criteria: "On the Beach" was just recently reissued in a remastered version which as close as you're likely to get to a digital version of how NY wants it to sound on CD, whereas he's repudiated the sonic quality of the earlier CD issues. So burn "Tonight's the Night" to have a copy and buy "On the Beach" for yourself.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Saturday, 27 March 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

You really, really need both. Sorry we're not helping here but come on man - those are two of the best albums ever made.

(They might just fit together on one CDR!)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 28 March 2004 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

yup, both essential. i might like on the beach a bit better, but i wouldn't want to do without either one.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 28 March 2004 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

On the Beach is alright, but Tonight's the Night's peerless. Burn that.

Miccio OTM.

Scott CE, Sunday, 28 March 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

you could mix and match so that you get both ambulance blues and alberquerque.

Flotsam of the Fishfolk (Flotsam of the Fishfolk), Sunday, 28 March 2004 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

Revive b/c I just listened to these two back-to-back. I think I like Tonight a little better, but the 2nd side of On the Beach is the best single side.

TS: "Tonight's The Night Somebody Saved My Life" vs. "Tonight's The Night Is Allright For Fighting"

Big Sambola & The Tailspinners (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 10 January 2013 21:34 (thirteen years ago)

Funny that so many people love tonight's the night so much. I'm gonna need to give it another listen as I wasn't taken by it half as much as on the beach

I've seen that photo before--I think it might be in the Tonight's the Night songbook I have (with a cover the same grainy texture as the original vinyl issue).

clemenza, Thursday, 10 January 2013 23:15 (thirteen years ago)

It was probably taken at the Roxy TTN live stand in '73. There's a pic of Neil and David Briggs from there in Shakey that looks like it was taken within five minutes of this one.

yeah i believe that is when it was taken -- the pic was published in the tonight's the night tour programme. this blog foreverneilyoung.tumblr.com was posting some neat things today from that period, including this!!

Perfect demonstration of how the consensus has changed in 8 years

perhaps only for the hardcore among us, but http://ow.ly/jdxyO -- 35 minute live version of tonight's the night from 1973. pretty insane.

tylerw, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

Probably deeply under the influence of art rock at the time--I assume there's a lengthy "Return of the Giant Econoline Van" movement somewhere in there.
