Been listening to them a lot lately.

Let There Be Rock (I actually heard this song live before buying SRO and I had coincidentally listened to the AC/DC album that SAME DAY. That realizations and the twin lead guitar solo blew me sent me into appreciative hysterics at the show)

Marry Me (after the show I drunkenly told Mike Cooley that "Marry Me" was my fave DBT song - which it was until I bought SRO and listening to "LTBR" a million times - but that he probably didn't care. He just laughed.)

18 Wheels Of Love (I can only hope something like this will happen to my mom)

Angels And Fuselage
Heathens
The Living Bubba
Something's Got To Give Pretty Soon
Dead, Drunk and Naked
Margo And Harold
My Sweet Annette

fuck this is really tough - in fact, the only tougher one for me would be Royal Trux. (sigh) - OK i'll try -

Margo & Harold
Marry Me
Dead Drunk and Naked

aww fuck this man, I can't. Three of their four albums are PERFECT all the way through. They rule live too. I'm sorry, its just too hard. One of my favorite bands of all time. I can't say enough!!

I like how incoherent my comments about "Let There Be Rock" are. I need to write PROOFREAD on my hand before I sit in front of a computer.

Gonna go write a song called "Blow Me Send Me" now.

Zip City -- This was my fave DBT song even before it became the center of perhaps my favorite concert moment ever: At their most recent Memphis show they brought up this adorable little weeble-wobbly 12-year old girl named Audrey Brown ("the unsinkable Audrey Brown," Mike Cooley called her) to sing the song for them. She sang it flawlessly with a hesitant smile on her face the whole time, while the band played their asses off wearing huge shit-eating grins. I later found out that Audrey was a member of the local Drive-By Truckers "street team" (who knew?) and had won her junior high talent show by singing the song (!!!) (I think the best part was Audrey singing the lyric "Well you're only 15 girl, you ain't got no secretary. And 'for granted' is a mighty big word for a country girl like you.") Oh, and the song is basically perfect.

18 Wheels of Love -- they did this the first time I ever saw them play, when I only vaguely knew who they were. Definitely a "holy shit" moment.

Then:

Marry Me
Let There Be Rock
Do It Yourself
Guitar Man Upstairs
Outfit
Heathens
Margo and Harold
Don't Be in Love Around Me

two months pass...
I just posted this another thread, so what the hell; I'm pissed:

>Playing the new Drive By Truckers album *Dirty South* now. It sounds even more tired than their last one; they've totally given up on trying to be Skynyrd, which sucks. Not horrible, though. Better than Patterson Hood's solo CD, I guess. So I bet it gets very good reviews.<

I'm now convinced, by the way, that *Dirty South* is their worst album ever, by far. The first song rocks okay, but just about everything else drags drags drags, almost 100 percent ballads, damn near no fucking memorable melodies, no fucking energy, nothing. Track #4 is okay, probably some others here and there, I forget which ones. Sometimes the high singing is kinda pretty, and the thing definitely is better to play at work than in a car, since the record does not move AT ALL. "Carl Perkins' Cadillac" strikes me as pandering bullshit. Track #9, "Cottonseed," is one of the most tedious, interminable songs I've heard all year. If somebody really believes I'm missing something, I wish they would explain what it is. Their three EARLY albums (as in pre Southern Rock Opera) blow this one out of the water, if anybody's curious.

"The Living Bubba" wipes me out everytime I hear it.

The first time I heard "Marry Me" I was convinced it was an Aerosmith cover. Maybe because it sounds a little like "Mama Kin." Also loving lately:

"Puttin' People on the Moon"
"Ronnie and Neil"
"Hell No, I Ain't Happy"
"Do It Yourself"
"Margo and Harold"
"The Presidnet's Penis is Missing"
"The Company I Keep" (for the stuff about Patterson's wives)
"Dead, Drunk, and Naked"
"Plastic Flowers on the Highway"
"Shut Up and Get On the Plane."

four years pass...

Noticed today that 3 of the top 5 DBT songs on Spotify are Isbell songs (Goddamn Lonely Love, Danko/Manuel, Outfit). That has to sting a little for Hood and Cooley.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 01:24 (ten years ago)

if you click on "show 5 more" it reveals that "shit shots count" "where the devil don't stay" and "my sweet annette" all have more listens than "danko/manuel"

da croupier, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 01:32 (ten years ago)

but really i can't imagine they care about bragging rights and an extra ten bucks

da croupier, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 01:34 (ten years ago)

I mean the isbell songs are really goddamn good what can they say

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 01:47 (ten years ago)

No Isbell songs would likely make my top 20 Truckers.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 01:54 (ten years ago)

as that spotify top 10 isn't in any sort of order, i wouldn't necessarily assume it even represents the ten most played dbt songs

da croupier, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 02:00 (ten years ago)

though obv "goddamn lonely love" must have been included in some popular spotify playlist

da croupier, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 02:00 (ten years ago)

xxp if you wouldn't at least include outfit you crazy for that one man

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 02:01 (ten years ago)

Outfit comes closest, I could make a case for that.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 02:02 (ten years ago)

ha - when looking for any evidence of a spotify playlist, i did find this quote from isbell in a '13 nyt article

He used a single word, “evil,” to describe Spotify, the online music-streaming service. “I think Spotify is honestly just another one of Sean Parker’s ways of ripping musicians off,” Isbell said, referring to the Napster co-founder who has a stake in Spotify. His comic mini-rant about Parker was so expletive-filled that, to paraphrase Mary McCarthy, even the words “and” and “the” from it are not printable here. But the gist of his complaint is this: “People can listen to your album over and over on Spotify, and you don’t really make anything on it.”

da croupier, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 02:02 (ten years ago)

No Isbell songs would likely make my top 20 Truckers.

madness

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 13:01 (ten years ago)

Well, I'd say it has less to do with the quality of his writing and more to do with the quality of Hood and Cooley. "Danko/Manuel" or "Outfit" would be my picks, but there are a lot of incredible songs from Hood and Cooley that would have to go to make room for either of them.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 16:11 (ten years ago)

Isbell peaked early. Almost the entirety of dude's solo discography bores me to tears

Wimmels, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 16:24 (ten years ago)

He's always got a couple up his sleeve per album, which is what made his stuff stand out so well in the Truckers. I know he did it on one of his albums, but this would have been awesome on a Truckers disc:

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 16:33 (ten years ago)

Honestly haven't listened to his solo stuff much, reminded me of ... Son Volt? Just kind of boring strummy stuff in 3/4. But I bet he's got more great songs to come than most manage in a career.
