Post-"Tattoo You" Stones: S/D

Since all the traffic's in ILE these days, this thread is probably futile. And the Stones never really had a proper S/D or C/D (at least I couldn't find it if they did). Anyway, this is a serious question -- is there anything after Tattoo You (the convention "last good Stones album") that wasn't utter dreck IYHO?

Um..."Had it With You" from 'Dirty Work' was good, some of 'Voodoo Lounge' was OK alt-country (I'm speaking of the 'roots-rock' end of alt-country, here), and "Party Doll", from Jagger's second solo was a nice collaboration with the Chieftains. Aside from that, nada.

Special comedy award for "Fight", from 'Dirty Work'. "Gonna pulp you to a mass of bruises...there's a hole where your face used to be...gonna smash your face in, slash you with my razor". Not only did it remind one of the grumpy pensioners at the bingo hall even then, but Jagger wasn't exactly built like a tank even as a young 'un.

'Mixed Emotions' from Steel Wheels was a pretty good tune (at the time).

Always loved the throwaway tune, "Too Much Blood" off UNDERCOVER, not least for Mick's bizarre admission that he'd seen "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" ("`orrible, wasn't it?")

Yeah Too Much Blood = ace, not as good as the title track though, excellent guitar riffs worked through 500 echo-effects at the beginning.

I got caught up in the Steel-Wheels-as-return-to-form hype, so I kinda liked that one for a while. Tunes that lasted were "Mixed Emotions" and "Sad Sad Sad," I guess. Really the best thing any of them have done since Tattoo You is Keith's first solo record. That a nice unassming album, w/ good tunes and atmosphere. Songs like "Make No Mistake" and "Shouldn't Take It So Hard" are good.

Steel Wheels was probably their best since Some Girls. I remember it being a bit of an event upon release as most thought they had fallen out for good in the mid 80s. They're was even a feature on the 9 o clock news when it was announced they were making a new record. 1989 was also the time when inklie readers started discovering the classic Stones period of 64-72. Up to then most late 80's teenagers probably thought the Stones were mainly about some hoary rockers who had a hit with Harlem Shuffle and whose singer pranced around with Tina Turner during Live Aid. So through the likes of the Mondays and 1990's 25X5 documentary, the Stones became "known" again.

Yeah and Steel Wheels got an amazing 9/10 rating in NME IIRC (which I do ;). Probably written by one M.Sinker in return for a nice beach house on the Riviera (all that bollocks about "leaving the NME because they didn't want to do my U2 review" ;). But back on track: 'Sad, Sad, Sad' was indeed rather good.

Are "You're So Cold" (like the Arctic zone) and "Shattered" from the right period? I can't tell those two apart, but I like both of them.

Both "You're So Cold" and "Shattered" pre-date Tattoo You (I think "...cold" is from Emotional Rescue, "Shattered from Some Girls)

Not sure if this counts, but "Just Another Night" off Jagger's SHE'S THE BOSS was alright for its time.

I saw the Stones during the Voodoo Lounge tour because I got free tickets, and I was surprised...it was actually not bad. Some of the material from that album was relatively decent, if not exactly stunning. Of course, I'm one of those who are of the opinion that the Stones were really better when they were still on Abkco. That said, I didn't mind Tattoo You and parts of Undercover.
