i know it could be a bit of a pain for some people being hassled by fans and stuff, but i once saw terry hall at a gig (nick heyward) and as he was on his own, and had been a big hero of mine, i went up to him, told him i really liked the stuff he had done with dave stewart (vegas) and asked him if i could buy him a drink. he just said 'no' and then went to the bar and bought himself one.

that showed me eh ?

Umm, well, I thought Peter Prescott knew who I was seeing as to how he knew my mom, so I said "hi" and he looked at me strangely. After a minute of "Who are yow?" I had to introduce myself. I could of sworn my mom introduced us once. It was a while before this had happened, but I thought he would have remembered. Clint seems to be the only one who'll say "hi Aja" because he's the one who'll remember my name. Oh geezz.

I once saw George Tabb of Furious George/MRR "fame" on his own at King's Island attempting to win an oversized stuffed bear by knocking bottles off of a barrel with some small, round object. I did not speak with him, so I guess it is more of a humorous sighting rather than an actual encounter.

I hit Eazy-E with a swinging door and knocked him off his feet. His handlers picked him up and looked at me mighty pissed. I apologized and quickly scampered.

My girlfriend once spotted Christian Slater walking opposite her up the crowded NYC block. He noticed her noticing him and he gave her a very nervous and quick "please don't say anything" look. This was at the height of his fame. She, no stranger to meeting stars, kept it cool and looked down, even though Heathers and True Romanec are her all time favorite movies. As he passed her, he smiled at her and gave her a sweet, knowing wink of the eye. It made her day and she still tells this story.

ooops duplicate message - sorry

oh, and a friend of mine had her hand stepped on, without apology, by an apparently pregnant Cristina Martinez. Does that count?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 29 March 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Isaac Brock once spilled a beer all over me and then did not apologize. One of his homeboys apologized for him saying "Sometimes Isaac gets like that."

cws (cws), Monday, 29 March 2004 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom Verlaine looked for records in the bin at Academy next to me today. I could smell his breath, it was gross and smoky.

hstencil, Monday, 29 March 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Back in 1998 or so my friend and her girlfriend were huge Magnetic Fields fans and went to see them play. They both used to dress all thrift-store-fabulous, and went up to Claudia Gonson to tell her how much they loved her. She said something to the effect of, "what the fuck are you two wearing?" and then walked off. I think they weren't as big fans after that.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 29 March 2004 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

claudia gonson used to date a friend of mine and was at a house party I dj'd and she said that I was the best DJ ever, but that was only because I played YMO and OMD.

My only awkward moment was when my friends Matt(ignivomous, once) and Liz interviewed Tony Conrad in 95 at columbia's radio station and they let Kyle Lapidus and I sit in. Tony asked us who we were and I said "umm, fans" and he glared at us and replied "fans...snaf, fans...snaf, fans...snaf" and believe it or not, I didn't have a good response.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 29 March 2004 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha Tony's so awesome. I ran into him on 3rd Avenue a couple of weeks ago. He said, very emphatically, that it was "great!!!!" that I still don't have a job.

I accidentally saw right up Sarah Cracknell's skirt when she was climbing a fence. I'm a gentleman, so I looked away.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 29 March 2004 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

We were gawking at Jared Leto and she jumped in front of the car.

Hahaha good lord I think everyone at the Hole show I was at saw up Courtney Love's skirt (that's where the camera was pointed 99% of the time.) I just kept on thinking of Straight to Hell and shaking my head.

i saw walter becker recently. i was too nervous to do anything except show him pictures of my girlfriend's parrot grasping a miniature bottle of whiskey. he laughed though

Haha, George Tabb is apparently gonna be speaking here next month. I hadn't thought about him for years.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Monday, 29 March 2004 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

similar to hstencil's story: ian johnson, jonathan williams and i ran into each other during rubber o cement's set (i think) at No Fun Fest and this older man (50s-60s) in front of us turns around and looks at us and starts scoffing, just completely turned off look on his face at the events on stage. I found at a little later that was tony conrad... i laughed.

good thing he doesn't live in SF!

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 29 March 2004 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Tony Conrad is one of the sweetest people I ever met. He bought some Polyamory stuff from me when I had a table set up at the DeStijl fest and didn't have enough money. "Oh, don't worry about it," I said, not letting the words "you're Tony Conrad, take what you want" come out of my mouth. "No, no no," he said. Dude proceeded to reach in his pocket and pay the remainder in change.

A dude so simultaneoulsy talented and genial should never have to pay for anything in change.

FWIW, Kyle Lapidus also sure is a nice fella. Dan, I know how to pronounce it, but how does one WRITE his daughter's name? :)

i once played "Give Us A Break" (it's an old trivia machine once popular in uk pubs and clubs) with Bobby Gillespie. he wasn't much help.

about ten years ago I saw Huey Lewis wandering around midtown Manhattan lookin' totally 80s in Ray-Bans and more than a little lost: he seemed to be posing, waiting around for somebody, anybody to recognize him. Sad. I averted my eyes.

I was standing on Hornsey Station waiting for a train to King's Cross, I was listening to "Orr", a fine album from the combined talents of Bruce Gilbert, Robert Hampson and Paul Kendall. As my train pulled into the station it slowly came to rest and who should be sitting at the window (The Other Window?) of the carriage right, slap bang in front of me but... Bruce Gilbert! All true! Of course I had to share this incredible coincidence with Brucey, and he was fairly amused by it. Funnily enough I've met him once more since then.

I once directed Morrissey to the toilets in a London indie venue.

Donna from Elastica asked me for a light once.

swimming laps at an NYC health club a few years back. Resting at the end of the pool, I recogonize the spike-haired middle-aged swimmer next to me -- Laurie Andersen. Nah, I think, her boyfriend wouldn't be caught dead here. Sure enough, the man himself appears on the pool deck IN A BATHING SUIT. Pot-bellied, pigeon-toed, here's a half-naked Lou Reed. Proceeds to leap in the pool and dog-paddle for about five seconds before jumping out and walking alongside Laurie as she resumes swimming. Only in New York, kids...

I accidentally saw right up Sarah Cracknell's skirt when she was climbing a fence. I'm a gentleman, so I looked away.

Hold on, was this the infamous "Cracknell's Crack" incident, as written up in Melody Maker back in the day? Or is the delectable Sarah in the habit of baring all while climbing fences?

I once went two's on my last cigarette with Jarvis Cocker. We talked about Susan.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 29 March 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I ran into Thurston Moore & Lee Ranaldo just a few hours prior to a Sonic Youth concert in Toronto. I was killing time in a record store across the street from the concert hall when they entered. I said out loud "Uh oh, better hide your Sonic Youth bootlegs," in the general direction of the proprietor, to which Moore just snickered and continued browsing thru the racks.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I almost ran over Tricky last weekend (I was in my car, he was on foot). This was like my sixth time seeing him, too.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, when I was coming back from England last summer, I was walking to my gate at Heathrow and this insane-looking dude was running toward me with a cart full of luggage, obviously late for his plane. As I got closer I realized it was Tricky. He had the most red eyes - like 8 shades past bloodshot - I have ever seen, and looked like he hadn't slept in a week.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I think everyone's got a funny Magnetic Fields story. I knew Claudia from her previous bands, and the first time she introduced me to Stephin, I told him what a big fan I was (this was pre-Merge, before many people knew who he was). He just stared at me and deadpanned, "Why?"

mike a, Monday, 29 March 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

In San Francisco I worked as a clerk in a butcher shop frequented by Danny Glover. Everybody loved him and when he'd walk through the door we'd all yell, "Danny! How ya doin!" He'd wave and say "Happy Holidays!" or whatever seasonal greeting was appropriate.

Then one time I saw him on the street walking away from an ATM machine and I instinctively yelled "Danny!" He sized me up, looking a little scared, until he realized he realized I was just the dude from the butcher shop. I imagine having his wallet out in the open probably made him a little nervous.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Soupy Sales did an on-air (radio remote) at a hotel i worked at in the late 80s. Never met him, but when i went to move out the table they'd been working noticed a broadcast of silver-black hair that had fallen from his head onto the white linen.

christoff (christoff), Monday, 29 March 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

That pinko sissy Tim Robbins used to come into the record store I worked in. He was actually very nice and WAAAAAAY into The Clash (surprise surprise).

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

My brother wrecked into Soup Sales' car and then got out and cussed him out. His license plate said "SOUPY."

This reminds me that when I lived in Chicago, Sally Timms, Bettina from Thrill Jockey and the lead singer dude from the Nerves all went swimming at the public pool in my hood. I used to swim there once a day every week, too.

hstencil, Monday, 29 March 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

fortunately Sally Timms doesn't look like Lou Reed, of course.

hstencil, Monday, 29 March 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I was in Tower on West 4th the other day the other day and saw Dave Pajo in line. He was buying a Chapelle show DVD.. An approximation of our conversation (and make sure you imagine my voice trembling and what-not):

PT: Um, hi, you're in Slint, right?
Dave: Yea.
PT: Umm... Dave, right?
Dave: Yea.
PT: Oh. Yea, sorry to bother you, I don't usually do this, I just.. uh.. Spiderland is one of my favorite albums.. like, of all time.
Dave: Oh. Great. Thanks.
PT: Yea, I saw you guys play at, um, Irving Plaza a couple weeks ago. Great show.
Dave: Oh yea? What night were you there?
PT: Friday night.
Dave: Cool, cool.
PT: It's great that you guys are back together now-- er, you know, whatever is, uh...
Dave: It was just for that one month.
PT: Right, right. Cool. Well, nice meeting you. Later. [shake hands]
Dave: Bye.

Okay. I just wanted to share that.

met G.E. Smith in a parking lot when i was 12 after a Hall and Oates concert. He wasn't very famous then so he was milling about smoking a cigarette and oggling the teenage girls. Everyone was talking to him and I think he enjoyed the attention.
